Salsa y Sentimiento is renowned as the first dance academy in the Partido de la Costa. Founded in April 2012 by its current director, Mr. Gerardo Osvaldo Russo, the academy offers a wide range of classes for both adults and children.

Gerardo Osvaldo Russo

Mr. Gerardo Osvaldo Russo was born on July 3, 1984, and resides in the coastal town of San Clemente del Tuyú, Argentina. His passion for Latin music began in 2005 when he first started dancing and listening to Salsa. This spark soon grew into a lifelong dedication to various Caribbean rhythms.

In 2009, he pursued a professional certification in Caribbean Rhythms at “SAOCO” Studio, one of the top training facilities in Argentina. To complete his studies, Gerardo demonstrated immense commitment by traveling 300 kilometers (approx. 185 miles) every week. It was during this time that he made the pivotal decision to dedicate his life to teaching and developing the ambitious dance projects he had envisioned for the future.

“He mentions that the city where he lived offered no way to get trained since there were few resources, and he couldn’t manage to carry out everything he had in mind. Additionally, his motivation was to grow personally as an instructor and dancer, allowing him to share all the knowledge he was acquiring with the people attending his classes. In 2008, he began teaching—initially as a hobby for a year and a half—until he made the decision to work 100% in his profession. Consequently, today he has his own dance studio called ‘Academia Salsa y Sentimiento,’ which opened in 2012 and where he currently serves as coordinator and instructor. He is also in charge of organizing the ‘San Clemente Salsa Congress,’ which he has done for about 3 years, and he organizes annual Salsa, Bachata, and other Caribbean rhythm parties for his institution; these include seminars and training sessions with high-quality, experienced instructors.”

The reason behind the opening of the “Salsa y Sentimiento Academy” was essentially a need among the people, not only in their own city but also in neighboring towns within the Partido de la Costa—the region where San Clemente del Tuyú is located. This provided them the opportunity to learn how to dance, express themselves, and find a place of freedom and belonging, while also meeting people and socializing. Consequently, it is known for being the first registered dance academy in the entire region, with the founder feeling very proud of both the team and himself.

In short, they mention that their goal has always been for people to feel identified with the activities they perform, finding a place where they can learn and have fun while recharging their energy. Students joining the academy can do so without any prior experience or knowledge of the rhythm they wish to practice. For this year, 2017, they plan to launch their official website to provide more information beyond their Facebook account. At the academy, students can start from scratch, but those who already have experience are also welcome since there are several different levels.

We work with people from 3 years old and up. The greatest goal achieved was creating an International Salsa Congress, where they aimed to take their students to compete. In 2016, they were able to do so with the reggaeton group led by teacher “Maximiliano Laplaca,” reaching the finals of one of the most important competitions in Argentina and South America, called the “Argentine Aerobics and Dance Tournament” (TAAD).

This year, along with other businesses in the city, they are working to provide benefits to their students. The goal is not only for them to have the chance to learn and have fun, but also to access discounts and benefits at shops in San Clemente. There is also a project for the coming years to train teachers who graduate from our Academy.

At the end, Gerardo Russo gives us a message for both current students and future apprentices: “My message as a teacher, but primarily as a human being, is for you not to stop chasing your dreams. As long as you work hard with responsibility, passion, and respect, things can be achieved. I also want to tell anyone who wants to come to the Salsa y Sentimiento Academy that they will find a place not only to learn to dance and train, but also a supportive group of people. It is a place where you can freely express yourself and bring out everything you have inside. Both adults and children are united by our passion for dance. For this year, 2017, the schedule for the various rhythms mentioned above has been available since January and February, so that everyone is informed before joining.

Alma Cubana Dance was founded in the spring of 2015 by Vanessa Webber (Gutierrez). Alma Cubana means “Cuban Soul”, and being half Cuban, she wanted her group to reflect that heritage. It has been a long standing dream to offer classes, build a performance group and to help grow the Salsa and Latin dance community in Southern/Midcoast Maine. Their focus is to bring quality instruction while maintaining the social atmosphere of Salsa dance.

‘I danced Ballet and Modern growing up and helped develop a salsa company in Boston while in College which I believe is celebrating 10 years or more this year, although I am not with them anymore. I took 8 dancers to Miami last year and they competed in the first Miami Latin Dance Championships where all of them placed in at least one category.”

Currently the My company is very young, only just 2 years, and it is mainly attended by those who love to dance but it is not a full time commitment. We perform locally a lot, and try to take the groups to 2-3 congresses or festivals, usually within driving distance. It is an academy located in Caracas, Venezuela, founded by passionate dancers and instructors who dedicate their time and effort to teaching future well-rounded dancers. They use didactic methods to provide dance knowledge, expanding their students’ horizons and future at a national and international level.

They feature a great environment where students not only acquire dance knowledge but also enjoy their activity. They perform on stage to demonstrate the high quality of the show and to showcase innovative fusions of dance, aiming to position themselves as one of the best academies in the market.

The academy started with a group of students who learned to dance Salsa Casino for recreation, and as time passed, it became something more serious.

Starting in 2004, they began teaching family and close friends, and within a few months, they already had at least 50 students.

In 2006, the Solar Latino Academy was officially founded, starting with salsa casino. They later added diverse dance genres as they expanded their knowledge of integral dance and teaching methodologies, thus forming a large number of dance classes taught at the La Trinidad headquarters. The only founder currently at the academy is Oscar, who was responsible for instructing and training dancers and expanding the Academy. After achieving excellent results in national competitions and festivals, the Academy’s Dance Corps (Cuerpo de Baile) was formed.

Mario has had an interesting start to what is now a SALSA / MAMBO lifestyle!

Mario was very athletic throughout his grammar and high school years. In 1999, a really good friend and high School teammate, Danny Useche, introduced Mario B. to the “Salsa Scene”. This, in turn, inspired Mario to sign up for his first dance class. It did not quite work out as well as he expected, as the class was slightly more advanced than he predicted. This left Mario even more determined to prove his point, size, shape and color was irrelevant when it comes to MAMBO!

Mario was down, but definitely not out. He then came across one of the smoothest and most humble instructors in the Mambo scene, Greg Taylor, a prodigy of Delille Thomas and Original Eddie Torres dancer. After a few days with Greg Taylor, Mario was in Mambo Heaven. Took classes with Greg for approximately 6 months and was eternally grateful to Greg for this time, patience and expertise. Mario knew it was time to move forward and take on more of a challenge; he began taking more advanced classes with other established instructors.

Mario was immediately sought out and asked to become “The Papa” to Abbey Plotkins “The Mambo Mamas & The Papa”. Mario was now the Mambo Papa! By joining The Mambo Mama & The Papa, Mario was gice the opportunity to perform for what would become an instant hit LATIN MADNESS, an off-Broadway Dancical / Musical depicting the evolution of latin dance from past to present. The director and producer agreed that Mario would be a great addition to their all-star cast. Mario was now dancing alongside the BEST Mambo Dancers in the world! Latin Madness gave Mario the opportunity to dance, work and share the stage with the most sought out professionals in the world.

With stage experience and help from an acting coach, Mario earned the respect to appear in the movies “Empire” and “Kal-ho-naho”. Mario acted for the NY International Independent Film & Video Festival at Madison Square Garden, which then opened the doors for Mario to perform in two latin concerts at MSG… the largest stage in the world! In a short amount of time, Mario has come a long away to become a Professional Dancer, Choreographer, Instructor and Actor.

What’s most amazing I that he achieved all of these goals with NO background in dance!

It’s true what they say “Hard work does” pay off! “Hard work does pay off!” Who would have thought that Mario would transition from a full – time athlete to becoming a future Mambo Legend? In addition, his love for music and dance was Mario’s motivation to name his youngest daughter Jazzlyn.

What to bring to class

Please bring comfortable shoes with a leather or suede bottom. The best investment you can make as a dancer is a pair of quality dance shoes.

Do NOT recommend rubber soles or thick soled shoes as it will be difficult to find your balance, spin, and do the other exercises that to do in class. Bottled Poland Springs water is sold at the studio for a dollar.

Come dressed to dance. A short sleeved shirt and comfortable pants, tight & wind breakers are recommended. This class is a workout, you will sweat & enjoy it. There is a changing are at the studio, as well as restrooms.

The school is also equipped with state of the art central air conditioning & heating for both the summer & winter.

What to expect

Every class begins with a warm-up as a group, with introductory footwork drills for the first hour.

This gives students a chance to review the material that they know, and also gives them opportunity to assess new students and makes sure that they are in the appropriate group. For the second hour you split into partner work & continue with turn patterns & instruction. At the end of the class students have time to practice the moves that they learned, as well as ask question & clarify things that may have been missed.
