2021: Find out which are the active nightclubs in Chile

It began in the month of November 2021 and we learned that in Chile there are already several places that began to open their doors to the public offering events, classes and a place to enjoy and get out of the daily routine and more with the Covid-19 pandemic, for We did a small tour around the country seeing which places or nightclubs are open or which are about to open their doors, and at the moment we have the following clubs:

The Orixas Disco and Nightclub is back:

Club Orixas, a nightclub that before the covid-119 pandemic had an outstanding billboard of live music events, dance shows, animations, contests and much more activities from 7:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. ; and we receive the information that will soon be opening its doors to the public and through its social networks we already have many advances of how it will start and here we have a brief summary of the following activities to carry out:

The musical atmosphere will be provided for the moment by the Resident DJ @djpamanar, on Wednesdays there will be bachateros, on Thursdays by Sabor Cubano, on Fridays by Mambo and on Saturdays there will be 3 Cubans – 3 mambos 3 bachatas + pachanga.

If what you want to dance and learn, these are the days (at the moment) that the following classes will be held (we still do not have their schedule so we have to be aware of their schedule of activities) and who will do them:

  • Wednesday: on Wednesdays the Sensuality of Bachata with @camilobsoul.
  • Thursday: for casino lovers, every Thursday we will have classes together @lalosuke
  • Friday: Online Salsa classes will be given with the style and elegance of teacher @gonzaloriquelme, all you need is to participate without any experience
  • Saturday: dance classes will be given, where everyone will be playing the styles in a Latin animation by @ pedro_pozo821

The Vanguardia Orchestra was born on May 28, 2001, the name of Vanguardia comes because I always ahead of what I wanted and break the barriers, beginnings date back to 1974 in Block 6 of January 23 in Caracas, musicians rehearsing: Cheo Navarro, Miguel Pacheco, el Gordo Zambrano, Miguel Diaz, Edgar Dolor Quijada and my older brother who supports me and gives me a drum set.

My first professional presentation was with a group called Clave and Son de Caricuao, the director was David Zurita, I made my debut as a chorus singer, imagine if we only alternated with the Caribbean Classical Sonero, that was on May 1st 1983, then in 1985 I began my career as a bongosero in the Fundarte Workshops in the Aquiles Nazoa Library with Professor Orlando Poleo until 1987, the Orchestra Conductorship came later.

The Orquesta Vanguardia is made up of 12 musicians, all of whom have great experience and professionalism. The orchestra is made up of Vicente Frigeiro 1st trumpet, Douglas Villarreal 2nd trumpet arranger, and Miguel Sánchez 1st trombone. 2nd trombone Wilfredo Calderón, Percussion, Oliver Meneses timbal, Richard Avila tumbadoras, Jackson Monterola bongo and bell, piano Douglas Madera arranger and director, bass Elio Torres, singers and choirs José Cedeño, Pedro Rivera and Lawrence Ibarra.

As a bongosero I started in 1985 going through several groups such as: Clave y Son, Son Bacara, Son 27, until 2001 when I founded my own orchestra today Vanguardia, but it was for a short time in the Bongo with Vanguardia.

Beginning as a singer, thanks to the great teacher Oswaldo Morales, well known for his hits like Cinco Centavitos and Ella, I studied with him for about three years. In 2005 I recorded my first production entitled Marcando la Diferencia with 11 songs like SABROSITO by Jose Reina, Cheo Navarro’s Fashion Orchestra, Quiero llorar , Ni llanto ni Flores , Déjalo Volar by Composer Angel Flores, Escaleras de tu Mente by Fran Quintero and Ciriaco by Pedro Rivera With this first production we traveled to Cali and made ourselves known to the public.

I have 8 songs of which 6 are Originals and 2 versions of songs like; Eres tu this is the promotional song that has its video clip that can be viewed on YouTube, as Lawrence and his orchestra Vanguardia.

The seeds of capacho give the sound to maracas

The capacho tree (Canna Generalis Bailey) is a large flower and its colors can be yellow, red or orange. The fruit they produce has seeds used by Venezuelan folklorists to create the filling of the maracas and, in turn, get their sonority.

For this process, there are three steps to make them and obtain the final product.

In Venezuela, the typical llanera maraca is filled with seeds of capacho, which are very hard and do not wear out easily.

Another material used is the so-called “espuma e sapo” which are a type of seed that also give a very good sound to the maracas.

I have been collecting these seeds you can see in the photos for the maracas that we are going to make for the dancing devils of Tinaquillo in my community of Santa Rita in the lower part of El Valle.

The maraca in Venezuela has been present mainly among our native peoples. It is used to accompany the dance, be a child’s toy, invoke, heal and cleanse at the hands of the shaman. This small and powerful Venezuelan instrument is composed of three elements of nature: mango or stick extracted from the wood of wild trees; tapara or gourd, fruit of a climbing plant with the same name and originally African; and finally, seeds of capacho (Achira) or seeds of Espuma e ́ Sapo (wild plant) that go inside the tapara and are commonly found in Latin America.

For being an idiophone instrument, the maraca produces sound thanks to the vibration of its own body, that is, to the shock of the seeds inside against the walls of the tapara when it is shaken, generating a dry and strong sound. Besides resonating when shaken, when we hold the maraca and make repeated circular movements with the wrist, we achieve that the seeds result in friction with the walls of the tapara, which produces a sound with greater sustain, similar to the sweep of a broom, called for this reason by several cultists escobilla’o.

Over the years, the maraca in Venezuela was incorporated into musical expressions of different regions, becoming an almost essential accompanying instrument and varying its playing technique according to the regions and genres that have adopted it. That is why in the Venezuelan plains, the maraca performance resembles the sound of galloping hooves, that is to say, the blows of the seeds to the tapara when shaking it are mostly dry or staccato, with an possible use of the escobilla’o technique that we will explain in detail in this method.

Unlike the performance in the Venezuelan plains, in the east of Venezuela the maraca emulates the sound of the sea with the prominent use of the escobilla’o; while in the center of the country, the use of this technique is low and the shaking of the seeds is less staccato or forceful than in the plains, making its rhythm function as the main guide for the dancers. The maraca can also be seen in different Afro-descendant drum ensembles in the country, and is generally played by the singers, who use only one maraca instead of two as in the aforementioned regions.

The Venezuelan maraca is fundamentally a popular instrument. Maybe that is why, until now there has not been a specific academic musical writing that allows to know in depth all its language. The most direct way to learn to play this instrument is mainly by oral tradition, as well as by observing, listening, and deciphering great maraca players who, thanks to the cultural heritage and family tradition of their towns, play it in a very genuine and masterful way. Insignificant Venezuelan maraca players who were masters in this field such as: Santana Torrealba, Máximo Teppa, Pedro Aquilino Díaz “Mandarina”, José Pérez, Coromoto Martínez, Trino “Chiche” Morillo, Ernesto Laya, Jorge Linares “Masamorra”, Lorenzo Alvarado, Manuel García, and from the Colombian region masters who have adopted the Venezuelan maraca tradition such as Gilberto Castaño, Diego Mosquera, William León, Emanuel Contreras, among many other anonymous heroes from different regions of Venezuela, have been and will continue to be the most important guide for the teaching and evolution of the maraca in the world, providing new generations with a cultural connection to the deepest roots.

Thanks to the legacy left by each of these maraca makers, a vital source of inspiration for many performers for decades, the commitment to continue with important educational inputs that allow the expansion of knowledge and the evolution of our popular Venezuelan instruments at the academic level is born, since these instruments per se, require a rigorous study in terms of vocabulary, technique, and history.

In this method 5 Movements are the key, I want to share the experience that helped me to understand the traditional playing techniques of the Venezuelan maraca and that led me to the design of a musical writing that shows its performance with clarity and discernment for each Venezuelan genre according to the vocabulary and variations that have been standardized over time.

And when I talk about variations, I emphasize five basic movements that I consider to be the key to the playing of the maraca. Five movements that will later become the musical discourse of those who master them.

Five movements that will show the student why and how the main traditional Venezuelan rhythms are born. Five movements that I have not invented, but that are the vocabulary of tradition, and that the student will observe in the performance of Venezuelan maraca players who have dedicated their lives to this instrument.

Personally, Special mention should be made of maestro Juan Ernesto Laya “Layita”, who instilled in me much of the basic knowledge of the maracas in the workshops dictated by the Ensamble Gurrufío: Aprende y toca con Gurrufío in 2000. Years later, once graduated as a classical guitarist from the Vicente Emilio Sojo Conservatory of Music in 2004, I began to design exercises that would allow me to pedagogically transmit to my students the language learned with maestro Laya and with several of the musicians mentioned in this writing.

An important step if we take into account that no music school in Venezuela had a pedagogical program for the teaching or application of theory to this instrument at that time.

It should be noted that I have put these exercises into practice in various clinics, master classes, courses, and seminars that I have had the opportunity to dictate around the world, where the development and learning of the participants has been satisfactory in a large percentage. Especially in the Simon Bolivar Conservatory (Ccs- Vzla) where I teach since 2014, in the Venezuelan Music seminar organized by Venezuelan percussionist Fran Vielma at Berklee College of Music (Boston-USA) in 2014, and in the “Venezuelan Creole Music Course” (Mirecourt-France) produced by maestro Cristobal Soto, in which I participate since 2015, among others.

With regard to the writing of the Venezuelan maraca, over the years I came across Venezuelan works for orchestra where there are specific parts for maracas such as the guitar concertos by Antonio Lauro, the works of Evencio Castellanos, La Cantata Criolla by Antonio Estévez, La Fuga con Pajarillo by Aldemaro Romero, and the Concierto para Maracas y Orquesta Pataruco by Ricardo Lorenz, to name a few. When I read them, I realized that their writing was not entirely idiomatic, so I had to interpret and adapt to the technique and idiosyncrasy of the Venezuelan maracas what the composer wanted to say and that the writing was not able to convey to me.

That is why in 5 Movements are the key, I propose the musical writing for the Venezuelan maracas in a bigrama, since, within the large family of percussion instruments, the maraca is one of the few that produces sound with the movement of the arm both up and down. And therefore, the upward movement is part of the rhythmic phrase.

In the bigram I suggest, the upper line represents the right hand, and the lower line the left hand, very similar to the piano writing in two clefs: right hand treble clef, and left-hand bass clef. In this way, the polyrhythm of the two maracas is visually separated when carrying out their movements. In addition to the bigram, I assigned to each movement a symbol that defines which of the five that I describe will be used in each figure.

Finally, I would like to comment that one of the main objectives of this method is that these five movements and their combinations show how basic traditional Venezuelan rhythms are accompanied, and besides, how they link or build connections that allow the performer to go from an accompaniment pattern to a variation, and then back without interrupting at any time the rhythmic stability, the sound, or the movement of the arm or wrist. I would also like to add that this method not only applies to Venezuelan music genres, but can also be used to incorporate this sublime and powerful instrument into any musical culture in the world.

Maracas in Latin rhythms belong to the minor percussion section.

A classic of Latin percussion. It is an idiophone instrument, it uses its body as a resonator element, which has its own sound. The origin of the maracas is South American and dates from the pre-Columbian era in America. Originally only one maraca was played, nowadays they are usually played in pairs. Its operation is simple, the sphere is filled with small elements that when shaken impact the inner wall producing the sound we all know. These small elements can be small stones, seeds, pieces of metal or glass… They are normally used to mark the rhythm in Latin music.

News about the San Francisco Bay Area live music scene

The SF Bay Area live music scene has been slowly reopening since the Summer and these are the latest developments. The Seahorse in Sausalito continues to offer live Salsa on Sundays in November. The Sunday Salsa calendar for November includes rising Salsa star Carlos Xavier on Nov. 7, Edgardo Cambon y Candela on Nov. 14, Louie Romero and Mazacote on Nov. 21 and Anthony Blea on Nov. 28. The live Sundays also feature the DJ music of KPOO/KPFA DJ Jose Ruiz.

Space 550 at 550 Barneveld in SF that was offering Live Salsa with Bachata and Kizomba rooms on Friday and Saturdays are resuming their live music offerings on Friday nights. The popular Friday nights cater to the dancers featuring popular bands such as Orquesta Borinquen, Julio Bravo and Salsabor and VibraSON plus Salsa Congress type of DJ’s on the decks.

The Ramp at 855 Terry Francois Blvd in San Francisco continues to offer Salsa at their popular outdoor venue that offers live Salsa every Saturday from 5 to 9 pm and resident DJ Mendy continues his DJ sets until 11pm. Their November calendar features N’Rumba on Nov. 6, Orquesta La Original w/lead vocalist Alexis Guillen on Nov. 13, Karabali with Karl Perazo (of Santana) and Michael Spiro on Nov. 20 and La Clave Del Blanco on Nov. 27.

Rocky’s Market at Oakland’s Brooklyn Basin has finished their events season for the year. This new outdoor venue has been a welcomed addition to the local scene and has made quite a splash since offering live Salsa, Afro-Cuban, World music, Comedy and Dance shows. All-star percussionist Javier Navarette is the curator for the Modupue Sundays Latin shows. Dancers have enjoyed the live music of the SF Charanga All Star reunions featuring Dr. John Calloway, Anthony Blea, Marco Diaz, Christelle Durandy, Orlando Torriente and others, Edgardo and Candela, Pellejo Seco, La Mixta Criolla, Mio Flores Habana All Stars and Navarette and his all-star Socially Distanced Friends band! I look forward to next year!

Santa Rosa released one of the best Salsa recordings of the year “Colegas” last Fall featuring all-star duets with Tito Nieves, the late Tito Rojas, Issac Delgado, Herman Olivera and others!….Grammy award winners Grupo Niche from Colombia will be appearing at Roccapulco in SF on Saturday, November 20th as well…..Superstar Marc Anthony will finally perform after several postponements at San Jose’s SAP Center on Friday, December 17th. Anthony is riding high on the charts with Pa’alla Voy, his remake of the group Africando’s Yay Voy 90’s salsa classic.

In Buenos Aires I held the Tango Festival and World Cup 2021

Buenos Aires, Argentina, the place where the spirit of Tango was born, so when tourists visit this beautiful city they say that to get to know it you have to immerse yourself in the magic of dance.

 

Tango is a dance full of sensuality that was born during the 1800s, a musical style that results from the fusion between African culture and the local cultures of the gauchos and native peoples, in addition to the contribution of European immigrants –mainly, Spanish and Italian – and from the Middle East.

The elegant and passionate movement of tango shows the exotic cultural mix of the first tango dancers and the solemn melodies of this music offer the listener a glimpse into the lives of the first Argentine immigrants, and over time the tango later spread to the wealthier areas of Buenos Aires and at the beginning of the 20th century it became a sensation throughout Europe and the United States.

For many years, Tango Festivals have been held in Buenos Aires every year, being a very attractive event for both national and foreign citizens, where many professional Tango dancers participate and compete and this year it is organized again by the Ministry of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires, Tango BA Festival and Mundial who announced the champions in the categories Tango de Pista and Tango Escenario which was filling the Buenos Aires center with magic with more than 4000 people who enjoyed it with the Obelisk on Diagonal Street North as part of the stage.

The Tango BA Festival and Mundial was held from September 16 to 26, where shows, tributes and the best dancers performed on stage; more than 400 couples from Argentina, Brazil, Russia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Spain, Romania, Poland, Malaysia, Turkey, United States, United Kingdom, China, Germany, Colombia, Indonesia, Ecuador, Mexico, Latvia, Georgia , Bolivia, Canada and Switzerland competed in the Tango de Pista and Tango Escenario categories in this edition of Tango BA Mundial.

The inauguration began on Thursday, September 16 at the Auditorium of the Usina del Arte at 7:30 p.m. where a tribute was made to maestro Aníbal Troilo (he was a bandoneonist, composer, orchestra conductor of Argentine tango) with the orchestral direction, arrangements and solo violin by Fabián Bertero, the special participation of the dancers Sandra Bootz and Gabriel Ortega, and the presence of notable guests such as the singer Sandra Luna and the pianist José “Pepe” Colangelo, the special production “Pichuqueando”.

September 17:

  • Starting at 5 pm: the Carlos Gardel Museum presents the Fileteadoras Talk, by Patricia Berman and Claudia Medori and in turn an interview by Silvia Brunelli and Mercedes González Bracco.
  • At 6:00 pm: at the Abasto Shopping, the La Juan D’Arienzo Orchestra performed.
  • Starting at 7:00 p.m., Hernán Reinaudo presented his album Toro mañero in the Chamber Room of @usinadelarte
  • 7:30 pm: María Garay presented 80 years of Life and Song, in Concert, at the Auditorium of the Usina, which were an exciting celebration of her career, with Marcos & Louise, Champions of Tango de Pista 2020, as dancers, Also at the same time, “Eternamente Di Sarli” was presented with the Orquesta Típica Misteriosa Buenos Aires on the voice of Eliana Sosa, at the Amphitheater of Parque Centenario. With Carlos Rossi, as special guest, and Carla Rossi and José Luis Salvo, as guest dancers, not to mention that at the same time there was a class and exhibition by Soledad Rivero and Cristian Gallardo.

September 18th:

  • From 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tango BA drinks the Historic Quarter. He toured one of the most emblematic areas of the City while enjoying concerts, guided tours, and dance shows. In addition, throughout the afternoon, “La Calle de la Música” came to life on a stage set up on the corner of Chile and Balcarce: where Ache Rey & Foul Envido Tango performed; Vanina Tagini & Gabriel Merlino Trío; Alfredo Piro and Profética y Fatal.
  • At 7:00 pm: Walter Ríos Quinteto presented El Tango y la Danza in the Amphitheater of Parque Centenario. A musical journey through the history of tango, from its origins to its contemporary expression.
  • At 8 pm: Cantá began at the Festival at the Carlos Gardel Cultural Space, with Alberto Bianco as host. Those who dare will be able to show their talent and love for tango on stage

September 19:

  • 12:30 pm: at the Usina del Arte, the Qualifying Rounds of the Tango World Cup were held, in the Tango Track Category.
  • 5:30 pm: in Sur en Vivo – Cultural Center – Milonga del Pueblo by Oscar Héctor, Cantá took place at the Festival, with Alberto Bianco as host. An open microphone for tango players who want to break it on stage.
  • 6:00 pm: The Emilio Balcarce Tango School Orchestra presented a tribute to Elvino Vardaro, the great senior violinist of tango, at the Centennial Park Amphitheater. Roberto Leiva & Valentina Cipollone will dance.

September 20:

  • 5 pm: Milonga Lo de Celia Photographic show Espíritu Milonguero, by Silvia Rojas and the magazine La Milonga Argentina.
  • 7 pm: Milonga Lo de Celia and there was a talk about the spirit of the Argentine milonga, with Silvia Rojas and guests.

September 21:

  • At 1 pm: in the Auditorium of the @usinadelarte (it is a unique space that brings together people from all over the world through the love of tango and dance) where all the qualifying rounds of the Dance World Cup were seen, in In the Stage Tango Category, here each couple presented themselves individually where they demonstrated all their talent to the whole world both live and on the web (internet)

September 22:

  • 6pm: The Milonga La Nacional begins with the presentation of My life in the milongas, by Oscar Héctor. The dancer, milonguero and organizer of spaces, portrays what he has experienced from the age of 9 to the present in the neighborhood clubs.
  • 8pm: Milonga El Beso and Hugo Mastrolorenzo presents his book: El tango ha died on stage. A dystopian tale about a robotic and cloned tango.

September 23:

  • A concert was held from Italy in tribute to Astor Piazzolla, and another from Japan with a repertoire of classics and new compositions

September 24:

  • There were classes and shows in emblematic milongas, proposals in cultural spaces, and the show Remembranzas, by Corporación Tango, in the Centennial Park Amphitheater. In addition, at the Usina del Arte, José Colangelo celebrated his 80 years with special guests: Gabriela Rey, Laura Colangelo and Fabián Bertero.

On September 25 and 26:

The grand finale of the BA Tango World Cup began, which will be enjoyed both live and through social networks from Vivamos Cultura; This final was very striking since for the first time the great stage set up was on Diagonal Norte, with the Obelisk in the background, giving it a unique image and experience, with different shows and tributes that filled the heart of the City with tango mysticism with:

  • Concert by the Sans Souci Orchestra, presented by Porteñisimo with the singers Emiliano Castignola and Walter “Chino” Laborde.
  • An emotional tribute was made to Juan Carlos Copes, who died this year, in which Johana Copes, his daughter, participated.
  • 32 couples took the stage to compete for 1st place in the Tango de Pista category.
  • Pablo Banchero accompanied by a guitar trio presented Serenatas de Arrabal.
  • The Sexteto Mayor, which together with Roxana Fontán, performed a repertoire with classic themes from all periods and compositions by contemporary authors.
  • The dancers María Nieves and Silvia Toscano, “La Cachorra”, met in a public talk in which María Nieves told the story of how she brought tango to the stage.
  • At the end, a tribute show to “Tango Argentino” was held, a show by Claudio Segovia and Héctor Orezzoli, which was decisive in the international recognition of tango. This tribute included exhibitions by important dancers such as Milena Plebs and Fernando Carrasco, Vanina Bilous and Javier Rodríguez, Guillermina Quiroga and Mariano Logiudice and Analía Morales and Gabriel Ponce. The general direction was in charge of Julio Zurita.

And at the moment of the climax, a great emotion was experienced when Fernando Bravo finally announced the winners in each category, not to mention that the couple chosen by the public was awarded in celebration mode.

“The world champions to the couples formed by Agustín Agnez and Bárbara Ferreyra in Tango de Pista; and Emmanuel Casal and Yanina Muzyka in Stage Tango. ”

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many people could not be at this beautiful festival, so the organizers made a great gesture with all their followers and transmitted it live by streaming to the whole world on Vivamos Cultura and the Canal de la City with the conduction of the event was in charge of Carlitos Lin and the awards, in charge of Fernando Bravo, so that he would know how the event was going and they could enjoy it from the comfort and safety of their homes.
