Damian Ballester and the transformations of Cuban Folk Dance

The relationship of Africa within the musical and dance culture in Latin America is notorious when we see the cultural expressions of the peoples of this continent, it is easy to see how similar they are, the use of percussion is one of the most relevant topics, in itself a mixture of cultural customs, religion, musicality, dance, in itself all the elements of the black race.

America, one of the main destinations of the ships with black slaves from many areas of Africa, caused our culture to be armed with a bit of each custom, therefore, we can say that in America there is a bit of each African people, this relationship of variety of slaves focused on dividing the forces of the race so as not to make it powerful, divided languages, customs, words and religions only left the marginalized population to communicate through percussion, an element that made the system improve at times of understanding within the fences where they lived.

Due to the above, African religions and customs are born in Cuba but, adopted by those already existing on the island, this combination gives us a rich variant of movements from three continents, Europe through Spain and Africa in all its splendor.

To clarify some topics of the folklore of the Caribbean island and its current dance transformations, we had to contact a great teacher, Damian Ballester, director of Iya Aye, one of the best folklore groups on the island of Cuba, to speak with this professional of the dance is necessary if we want to obtain real information about Cuban traditions, a great teacher who has left his teachings in many Spanish-speaking countries, among which Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and now in the United States stand out…

we begin by greeting him and opening a pleasant conversation, to which we got an original response “Greetings acere, what was it”, calling him opens up a range of questions on the subject in question, here is an extract of the most common doubts generated around the relationship with salsa, its festivals and diffusion in the world.

Greetings Prof. Damian, grateful for your receptivity, we want to give information to our readers about the relationship of Cuban folklore within our world, Salsa, to begin with, what is defined as Cuban Folkloric dances?

Grateful for the opportunity and sure, that if we report on the case, folk dances are nothing more than the set of cultural goods or phenomena that constitute a cultural complex with manifestations of all aspects of popular life. It is the sum of the manifestations acquired by experience, by inheritance, by tradition, by the satisfaction of biological or sociological needs, among other things. This lasts through several generations and almost always undergoes transformations.

They will get compound terms in the word folklore, which speaks of people or people, popular knowledge, together with the popular knowledge of the people. It is a very long topic, because I should talk about so many things about my culture, better let’s leave the definition until here and thus add flavor to the interview.

Much better, we continue then, do African dances have any impact on Cuban folk dances?

Yes, of course, it is the root, the exercise of dance has always characterized my land and has suffered the same processes of contagion and transculturation between the ways of dancing of the colonizer and the styles introduced by African ethnic groups since the 16th century, in fact, the colonizers brought romance, active in the Cuban countryside for several centuries, with its couplets and their ways of singing and founding alegrías, while the black slaves included their ancestral rites, their drums, and their particular sense of rhythm and movement. bodily.

Given this brief explanation, we can say that not only dances of African origin contributed or influenced Cuban folklore, we can say that there is also an incidence from Spain, France and the Caribbean, but its main axis was born from the Spanish and the African.

We know the extent of Cuban folklore, for how long should a person prepare to be called a professor in this branch?

First of all, to carry the name, whether it is a teacher or instructor of Cuban folklore genres, there are two factors that are very important, the first is study, since Cuban folklore is made up of a very wide range of genres divided into different styles, I could mention some examples: Peasant, popular, Afro-Cuban and Franco-Haitian folklore.

Within the styles of peasant folklore, examples could be given of the Cuban zapateo, the ripiado parakeet, the chidonga, the hawk, the caringa, the son montuno, among others.

Within the styles of popular folklore, the Complex of the rumba, the mambo, the chachachá, the danzón, the dance, the pilón, the congas and the comparsas, the casino can be mentioned, within the Afro-Cuban folklore the Bantú cycle can be mentioned, the Yorubas, the Arara, the Abakua, within Franco-Haitian folklore we can mention the French tomb, the Haitian merengue, the gaga, the vodu among others, if I continue we will not finish today. (laughs to close)

Of the folkloric dances, which are the most outstanding or spread worldwide?

It could be said that there are several, examples are the popular folkloric ones, one could say the casino, the mambo, the chachachá, the son, the rumba complex, that the latter people tend to say are African or Afro-Cuban dances, that have African influence does not mean that they are classified within Afro-Cuban dances because this genre emerged in Cuba, was used as an object of protest against the government of that time and was eradicated in the essence of Cuban. In the same way, the one that has had the most impact and remained in the whole world are the Yoruba dances or dances of the orishas.

Should we open another interview to just talk about the many genres that the island embraces, what institutions correctly form the folkloric traditions in Cuba?

There are many institutions in Cuba, from the community point of view what is named in Cuba as amateur dancer are the community projects and actions that are nothing more than groups created in the communities, all of these supervised technically and methodologically by specialists from the houses of culture of each area by provincial and national methodologists governed by the Ministry of Culture.

From a professional point of view, there are art schools such as the ENA (NATIONAL SCHOOL OF ART) and the ISA (SUPERIOR INSTITUTE OF ART) all governed by a logical curriculum organized by specialists and connoisseurs of the genres.

Other institutions that could be mentioned, is the little school of the national folkloric group of Cuba with 56 years of creation in charge of rescuing and safeguarding the traditional Cuban musical and dance traditions.

Wao, Enough, Do you know if there is any similar institution in the world?

In the world there are countless schools that are training dancers with the Cuban style and technique, whether they are Cuban or foreign teachers, but nothing like the preparation of art schools in Cuba that work with a logical and well-prepared program, in some schools around the world it could be said that they do not work under a logical methodological program for the teaching of these genres due to the commercial and monetary part, unfortunately there are many dedicated to commerce, to money and not to the necessary dedication.

This dissemination has been achieved while respecting the roots and traditions of the farmers? The root? The original essence?

Unfortunately, it could be said that a good diffusion of Cuban genres worldwide has not been respected or achieved, of 100% of the performers, it could be said that only 10% are protecting Cuban traditions, it is sad to say, but trade and populism it is destroying the folklore of an entire country.

Have these changes in traditions positively or negatively impacted Cuban culture?

First of all, traditions do not change if they are not passed down from generation to generation. In terms of their impact, I see it negatively because the dissemination that is taking place is incorrect and worst of all, there is no organization, which was of Cuba, can follow up on the program that is being given to Cuban genres, in itself, many see the commercial and hence they do not care about the poor distribution of what is taught.

What is the reason that so many dancers seek to perform Cuban dances? It is notorious to see it at festivals and congresses.

There are two very important factors: 1 Cuban music, which has been evolving in an incredible way, fusing Cuban rhythms within its repertoire, and the other factor is not because I am from Cuba, Cuban folklore could be said to be the most complete genre available. world level from the point of view of dance, is that it has a history, virtuosity is varied, it could be said that it is well complemented, due to its complexity and interpretive difficulty, it is what attracts attention, additionally, salsa comes from us, from these roots is born what now wants to be denied.

Teacher and the Cubans? Have Cubans spread their dance correctly?

It could be said that the vast majority of Cubans have disseminated the genres well, why do I say that the vast majority?

Because there is another small group that deforms it, money changes everything, foreigners think that all Cubans They dance, it has happened that they say Cuban and quickly you think he is a dancer, he knows everything, he is good, and no, that is not reality, one thing must be clear about being an opportunist, not a dancer, being a dancer by hobby and another is being one by profession or for being a teacher.

There are Cuban teachers who are hurt by the deformation that is happening with what has been studied so much, but there are others who only care about getting paid and do not care if their students do it well or badly.

How has the interpretation of Cuban roots impacted the so-called Salsa Casino in the world? Has the original and real spread of traditions been respected?

Look, since Cuban music began to evolve inside the casino, it began to undergo a series of transformations from movements to choreography due to the musical style that Cuban orchestras began to spread, known as TIMBA, which was well accepted by the public, If we talk about the impact from the traditional point of view, it could be said that there is no original interpretation of the Cuban roots because they are not executing a specific traditional genre, but rather what they are using different styles of the traditional folk dances that all this could be called Variety.

Have Cuban music and dance festivals or congresses devoted time and effort to improving these transformations? Have they worried about minimizing the damage?

In most cases, very few, first of all, if it is a competitive event, the organizers make the mistake of hiring unqualified personnel to evaluate genres of Cuban origin, and that is where the serious faults come from. There have been cases where there are groups , couples or soloists who perform a good technique within normal limits and the jury evaluates for a taste problem if they see it as beautiful and give it less points, or disqualify it, it is not about beauty, it is about correctness, the organizers should be more careful about these things.

What recommendations would you give to our dancer readers on this controversial topic?

The dancer must be clear about four aspects that are fundamental to his artistic life and entire career: dedication, love of dance and, most importantly, study.

Do only what you love and you will be happy, the one who does what he loves is blessedly condemned to success, which will come when it should come, because everything that should be, will be, and will come naturally.

Robert: His name is: Elio Osácar Douguet, and artistically we know him as: Sonny Bravo When and where were you born?

Sonny: I was born on October 7, 1936 in West Harlem, New York City.

Robert: Are you of Cuban descent?

Sonny: Yes, my grandparents were born in Havana, three in Santiago de las Vegas and one (maternal grandfather) in Bejucal. My parents were born in Key West, FL, and raised in Tampa, FL.

Robert: Tell me about your father Santiago “Elio” Osacar.

Sonny: Obviously, my first mentor! Santiago Osácar Colomá, born October 12, 1911 in Key West, FL, raised in Tampa, FL. He and his two older brothers, Juan and Tomás, founded the Sexteto Tampeño in 1928. He married my mother, Elisa Douguet Bravo in February 1932 and they settled in New York around 1933. Shortly thereafter he joined the Caney Quartet as bassist and second voice. At that time he also formed and recorded with his own group, the Conjunto Moderno. Later he was also a member of Monchito y su Orquesta. But he always returned to Caney! Until his death in the summer of 1957, from a pancreatitis attack he suffered on the stage of the Chateau Madrid in NY.

Robert: Maestro Sonny, is it true that you played baseball, but due to an injury you turned to music?

Sonny: Yes, it was in an amateur league in Miami where I was raised, my father was the manager! I was a pitcher and after pitching a complete game, while it was drizzling; the shoulder pains started the next day and that’s as far as my brief career went.

Robert: Did you write arrangements for Conjunto Caney?

Sonny: I only wrote one, “Añorado Encuentro” (Piloto y Vera), but it was never recorded.

Robert: What groups did you work with in Miami?

Sonny: My first job was with the Conjunto Casino de Miami. I also worked with several orchestras (Juanito Sanabria) and several combos (Cheo Venero, Gonzalo Barr). From 1959 to 1961 I was with Conjunto Caney. Then (1961-1963) with Mandy Campo, with whom I made my first tour outside the U.S., it was to Aruba and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Between 1963 and 1964 I worked with José Fajardo. He played dances in Miami on Saturdays and in New York clubs the rest of the week. When he decided to stay in New York, he convinced me to return with him.

Robert: Is the Típico Charanga format your favorite?

Sonny: Yes! I would like to have the same format we used on Alfredo de la Fé’s LP (Toca, Alfredo Toca) with the modern harmonies that can be heard in my arrangement of “El casabe,” my adaptation of Humberto Perera’s arrangement of “Que rico bailo yo,” and my arrangement of my own song, “Toca, Alfredo toca.”

Robert: What pianists influenced your playing?

Sonny: Charanga genre: Jesús López. Ensemble genre: Lilí Martínez. Big band and combo genre: Pedro “Peruchín” Jústiz. Variety of genres: Rubén González.

Robert: How did you become involved with the José Fajardo Orchestra?

Sonny: In 1963, bassist Nilo Sierra took me to the Palladium to meet Fajardo. After I married my first wife, I returned to Miami, and was able to contact him. During 1963 I played with him the dances I mentioned above and also toured with him to Venezuela, Mexico, Santo Domingo, and Puerto Rico. Fajardo stayed to fulfill his contract at the San Juan Hotel, but Orestes Vilató and I returned to New York. Orestes because of melancholy, and I, because I found out that my wife was going to give birth in January 1965.

Robert: As I understand it, when you settle in New York, you start playing with: Willie Bobo, Bobby Valentin and Ray Barretto What would you highlight about your work with Barretto?

Sonny: Between 1965 and 1966 I was Raul Marrero’s musical director. Besides what you mentioned, I also played with Vicentico Valdés, Mauricio Smith, Cortijo, Maelo and La orquesta Broadway, at that time. With Ray Barretto (and his charanga format) I only worked for two weeks, that was in October 1966, until the return of his pianist, Edy Martínez, who had stayed in Colombia after a tour. I felt very comfortable with Barretto’s group and I would have liked to continue playing with him.

Robert: How did your integration with La Tipica 73 come about?

Sonny: I was there from the beginning. The group (unnamed) started in the summer of 1972 with musicians from various orchestras in a “jam session” (descarga) format, with the purpose of filling out the week with stews on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, that is, the laziest days in clubs and dance halls. Alfredo de la Fe was one of the original musicians. He and I played with Fajardo at that time.

There was also Bobby Nelson (flute) from Charlie Palmieri’s orchestra. Instigated by Johnny “Dandy” Rodriguez and with the support of several promoters and club managers, we decided to strengthen the group, create an ensemble and take the risk of competing with the already established groups.

Robert: Where did the idea of making the record production “Intercambio Cultural” come from?

Sonny: Johnny Rodriguez made the connection when he went to Havana on vacation. When he returned, he convinced Jerry Masucci to initiate the arrangements so that he could record at EGREM’s studios.

Robert: Was Típica 73 blocked because they had performed and recorded in Cuba and that’s why the group disbanded? Or were there other reasons…

Sonny: That’s the only reason!

Robert: What do you remember about your experience with Conjunto Clasico?

Sonny:

Side A: A lot of work, good music, good musicians.

Side B: Out of 20 songs, there were 19 solos of three and only one piano solo!

Robert: Maestro Sonny, you were present in several stages of Tito Puente’s orchestra, did you replace Jorge Dalto?

Sonny: Yes, in the Latin Jazz Ensemble. Jorge had his own group called “InterAmerican Band”. In the salsa band, I replaced Ruben Rivera. Eventually, the two formats came together to form a super-combo.

Robert: Of all the arrangements you have done in your career, which is your favorite?

Sonny: I have several, by format.

Robert: And your favorite piano solo?

Sonny: I have two. El casabe (Alfredo de la Fe LP), because of the relaxed son montuno tempo and because of my favorite format: ¡Charanga moderna! And ¿Adónde vas? (Tito Puente’s LP) because it was recorded live and I could extend the solo, and because it’s the King’s orchestra!

Robert: On January 28, 2003 there was a historic reunion in Puerto Rico, which culminated with the release of the album TIPICA 73 LIVE. How did you live that experience?

Sonny: The audience enjoyed it, but not me. There was flavor and swing, but the piano had a damaged key and I was almost completely out of tune and the choruses were pretty weak. The record was bootlegged before it was released.

Robert: Of today’s pianists, who would you single out?

Sonny: In the Afro-Caribbean Jazz genre (Latin Jazz) there are a ton of Cubans like Chucho Valdés, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Hilario Durán, Ernán López-Nussa, Harold López-Nussa, Aldo López-Gavilán, Iván “Melón” Lewis, Alexis Bosch, Yan Carlos Artime, Rolando Luna, Ramón Valle, Manuel Valera, Daniel Amat, the Venezuelan Luis Perdomo, the Colombian Edy Martínez, etc. In the genre they call salsa, my favorite: Papo Lucca, the poet of the piano, impeccable flavor and swing. Eddie Palmieri is Eddie Palmieri! Oscar Hernandez, Ricky Gonzalez, Edwin Sanchez and Yeissonn Villamar.

Robert: What future do you see for salsa?

Sonny: Unfortunately, I think it is diminishing with the disappearance of the old guard. We need to remember and respect tradition, but we also need to move forward, developing genres and sub-genres. For example, in Cuba, dance is developed and danzonete and danzón emerge. They develop the son and the son montuno, the guaracha, the mozambique, the mambo, the ritmo pilón, the ritmo pa’ cá, etc., emerge. Then came the songo and the timba, all based on the son. Where is the development of the New York, Puerto Rican, Caribbean or South American “salsa”? It is still more or less the same since the day it was discovered. If it were not for the innovations in Cuba, there would be no groups such as: Los Van Van, NG La Banda, La Ritmo Oriental, Klimax, etc. And please don’t talk to me about “salsa monga” or “bachata” or “reggaeton”, which, in my humble opinion, are not innovations, but aberrations!

Cuban pianist Daniel Amat achieves his dream abroad

Historically, Cuba has been a tremendous source of talent and keeps on proving it to this very day. Through our great friend, Cuban tres player Ivan Camblor, we have been able to make contact with talented pianist Daniel Amat, who has revealed some of the most interesting facts about his life and career both in his native country and worldwide.

How Daniel got into music

Daniel was fortunate to have been born into a musical family, starting with his father, who was known as ”El Pancho Amat” and had a great talent with the Cuban tres. On his mother’s side, there were also several musicians, so as a child Daniel always had contact with this fascinating world, to which he would belong a few years later.

By learning to play, he started with percussion, but little by little, he experimented with the trumpet and ended up playing the piano at the age of 13, since he saw it as a mixture between the sound world of the trumpet and the rhythmic world of percussion. This is the instrument that would finally hook him and for which he would later become known.

Daniel was a native of a small village in the country, where music could be studied at a basic level. However, anyone who wanted to attain an average level had to go to Havana if or if, but first those interested had to take some entrance exams in order to study in the aforementioned city.

After passing those tests, you went to the National School of Art (ENA), which was especially for the people from the Cuban provinces. In the case of Havanans, there was a music school exclusive for them. At the ENA, I met people from all over the country who played all kinds of genres, which helped me a lot. I studied with Ulises Hernández, who was an excellent teacher and one of the best concert pianists in Cuba” said Daniel on the issue.

He also told us that the school prepared him for many things, although he assures us that teaching is never complete, since a professional in any field must always look for a complement to add to that knowledge, which is given by practical professional experiences. The same happens with music and he is a great example of this.

In the same way, he pointed out that what he learned in the conservatory could not be learned on the street and what he learned on the street could not be learned in the conservatory, so the study and practice complement each other and are not mutually exclusive.

Daniel’s professional start in Cuba

In addition to his studies at the conservatory in Cuba, he also began to pursue music in a much more professional way by playing charanga and danzones at the national hotel. He assures that this experience was very enriching, since he had the opportunity to learn what he could from older musicians with an immense trajectory.

Of that time, Daniel highlights his enormous will to know everything, so he always paid close attention to the anecdotes and stories that his colleagues told each other. Additionally, he was given a lot of advice on how to play or not, so he learned a lot during those years. 

He also played with some Cuban popular music and danzón orchestras until he found his own style and released his first album ”El Piano Que Llevo Dentro” in 2003, which is when he formally started his solo career. It is since then that the piano started to be a fundamental part of his repertoire, although he never abandoned danzón, son and changüi. He also adds a bit of Latin jazz to his songs, which was always to his liking and he relied on what Chucho Valdez was doing with Iraquere to find the style he wanted to follow.

Moving out of Cuba

When Daniel turned 24 years old, he decided to leave Cuba and look for opportunities in other latitudes after marrying his current wife. It is there where his career obviously takes a new direction and many more growth opportunities for the young artist seemed to be surfacing.

While very far away from his homeland, he began collaborating with big bands and symphonic orchestras, but always playing and experimenting with the Cuban genres with which he started his career in the first place.

Since he had already traveled with his father to other countries in previous years due to his work, he developed many friendships and contacts with many people outside of Cuba, so he was able to get to work on his own stuff quickly and without delay. This led him to be called to perform at festivals and events in the United States, Spain and other parts of Europe.

Thanks to the above, Daniel has been fortunate to be able to work in the music branch without the need to look for other jobs as is the case of many other musicians when they emigrate from their respective countries. This has allowed him to focus one hundred percent on his musical projects and to start teaching jazz, Latin jazz, phrasing and many other areas.

The pianist is very happy because he will soon release a compilation of his first two albums called ”Una Parte de Mi” in vinyl format. For the same, he had the collaboration of his father ”Pancho” Amat, musician Orlando Valle ”Maraca”, maestro Chucho Valdéz, Sixto Llorente ”El Indio”, his piano teacher Ulises Hernández, percussionist Changuito and many more.

In Venezuela, Caracas, the neighborhood is a way of life with its own identity. The neighborhoods of the entire National Territory, its inhabitants, become outstanding characters. Such is the case of Betty Zapata who was born in the emblematic La Pastora Parish located in the Capital (Caracas). There he spends his childhood in a neighborhood of colonial and historical houses of Venezuela.

There are many memories of that legendary Zone, they are inevitably built by those associated with survival, preparation, development, work, love, struggle and family formation, its magic and what marked it for life… . “Music”.

My connection with music is due in part to the fact that I live in a popular area where the music that was heard was Afro-Caribbean (mostly Salsa), the parties or meetings in my house and the neighborhood were always enlivened by that type of music, the most rooted and sticky collectively, originating the most varied dancers.

In the Carnestolendas festivities, improvised platforms (Templetes) were installed to stage the most varied costume and dance contests. Leaving my childhood and beginning my adolescent stage, I participated in dance competitions, obtaining recognition and prizes that were awarded to the young people of my generation.

I attended festive celebrations (dance meetings) with my older sisters at the age of 12, not because I was a dancer, but to not leave me alone, since I was the youngest of 3 sisters, this allowed me to share with people older than me and which I was learning the different dance styles “remembering with great affection the Cayender family, made up of excellent dancers” they are part of my school and love for dance. My cadence, flavor and body movement also allowed me to learn until I had my own dance style.

The music of the moment was the Danzones, Billo’s, Melodicos and in my house my sisters listened in the 70’s to Joe Cuba, Ricardo Rey and Bobby Cruz, Eddie Palmieri, the Latin Dimension prevails, Grupo Mango, Salsa Mayor, La Banda and his Young Sauce. That stuck with me forever and I felt drawn to Salsa.

That gave me the basis to fully incorporate myself into the exciting world of music. In the Barrio salsa is something essential, if you don’t dance it, enjoy it, feel it, you’re nothing.

Attending a meeting, an event, a concert, a presentation, a party or a meeting and there is no salsa, you feel an emptiness since with it we enjoy, we share, we dance and it definitely puts us to enjoy.

In the course of my 6 decades of existence, I have not ceased to be linked to it in different facets: as an audience, spectator, guest, contestant, jury, organizer, producer and director of events.

Each of these participations has allowed me to stand out, stand out and be a well-known, popular and loved person, a reference in the organization of a good party, night events, presentations of representative groups of the world of Salsa such as:

Ray de La Paz, Herman Olivera, Frankie Vásquez, Bobbie Valentin, Willie Rosario, Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Sonora Ponceña, La Selecta, Mulenze, Carlos Cano Estremera, Julio López, Yolandita Rivera, Mambo Legends among others, and for those from the Patio: Bailatino, Rumberos del Callejón , Ensamble La Calle, Albondiga y su Pandilla, Repicao, Tributo, On Fire, La áquina de la Salsa, La Negramenta, Gerardo Rosales, Javier Plaza’s Son Risa Orchestra among others.

This has allowed me to be an obligatory reference when it comes to producing and making an event of great importance and musical quality where the Dancing Public is respected and appreciated, providing them with the comforts to enjoy an excellent show and Latin music is seen as an element of identity that belongs to all of us to live it and feel it.

I am (Betty Zapata) currently planning and developing projects in the short, medium and long term and to give you a heads-up I am giving you the scoop: I am here with my radio program to promote, support, disseminate and promote our exciting and magical world of Caribbean music.

With more than thirty years of experience in salsa and Latin Jazz, he has integrated the best groups in Venezuela, including the Orquesta Bailatino, Naty y Su Orquesta, Grupo Bacheo, Andy Durán and his Latin Jazz, El Pavo Frank and his orchestra, Orquesta La Renovación, Los Rumberos Del Callejón, Orquesta las Vibraciones, Verónica Rey and Her Orchestra, Salsa Silva and Guerra by Mauricio Silva Musician and, Mariana La Sonera and Her Orchestra, Grupo Mango. Between his tours he has visited countries such as the United States, France, Colombia, Peru, Argentina, Australia, Curaçao, Mexico and Aruba.

Alberto Crespo and Bacheo Latin Jazz has two record productions, the first el Chuchu del viejo and the second de África Soy, which will be on sale soon, and they feature musicians with a long career and perform salsa and Latin jazz with a varied repertoire in rhythms such as son, danzón, chachachá, guajira, salsa, etc.

He currently serves as director, arranger, composer of the Salsera Resistance of Venezuela Bailatino and at the same time working hand in hand with musicians of international stature.
