Shine the Movie is coming to all US Theaters on August 24th

Isidro Infante is one of the most successful producers and arrangers in the history of Salsa

Born August 12, 1952, San Juan, Puerto Rico) is a professional pianist, arranger, composer and music producer, working in genres such as Classical Music, Rock, Pop Rock, Latin Ballad, Rock in Spanish, Salsa, Latin Jazz etc.

From a young age Isidro was influenced by listening to his father play the violin, getting involved with music at age 14 when he participated in a band that played songs by Santana and Chicago.

At the age of 15 he formed his band “Carpe Diem” (Live Life), a Rock/Salsa group that played Rock’n’Roll, Pop, Salsa and included Tommy Villarini on trumpet, Cuto Soto on trombone and guitarist Manolo Sastre.

Two years later, Infante was in charge of the background music for Myrta Silva’s television show.

After taking private piano lessons with the famous pianist Carmen Socorro Duclerc, he studied at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico and at the University of Puerto Rico, obtaining bachelor’s degrees in music and chemistry.

Although he was inclined towards medicine because it was his father’s profession, he decided to delve into music and graduated in composition and arrangements at Temple University in Philadelphia in the late 1970s.

In 1995, Isidro Infante and ‘La Élite’ signed a contract with RMM Records as an exclusive artist. Isidro also signed as A&R director for RMM records.

With him he gained experience, quality and evident success in his productions for the label. His work with La India earned him double platinum sales and a Grammy nomination for their album “Sobre El Fuego.”

Within just four years of its founding, La Élite became a dominant force in the Salsa music industry. The band’s first release earned a gold record as well as awards from AS, Paoli and Diplo.

The hit songs “Que Tengo de Ti,” “Nave de Papel,” “Ganas” and “Has Quedado Retratada” all topped the Tropical Salsa charts.

On Isidro Infante y La Élite II, the group’s second production, Isidro added vocalist Maggie Ramos. This helped him create an album with an exceptional variety of music.

He was part of renowned orchestras such as Pacho Galán, La Dimensión Latina and El Trabuco Venezolano and participated in a series of record productions in Caracas, Venezuela.

In 1983 he recorded his first album with his own band. His first hit “Ella No Baila Sola” became the theme song in every night club in Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Panama, USA among other countries.

In 1985, Samuel moved to Chicago, USA, where he quickly formed his orchestra with members of different nationalities resulting in a mixed sound for his music.

Samuel has ventured not only into the salsa genre, but also into Latin jazz that surprises even those who don’t know him.

It doesn’t take much to realize that Samuel was “El Maestro del Buen Ritmo” and that his music is here to stay.

He trained musically and academically, open to the idea of expanding his artistic horizons.

“I began my musical studies in Fine Arts, among my teachers I remember Günther Renz.

In Venezuela I attended the Juan José Landaeta Conservatory and the Caracas Philharmonic Conservatory with the pianist Paul Rosenbloo.

I studied harmony and counterpoint. With maestro Antonio Lauro, composer and guitarist, I completed my academic training”.

At the age of 15 he began his professional career as a pianist in the Pacho Galán Orchestra. There he learned the tricks of popular dance music of the Colombian Caribbean, and the possibilities of sharing with national musicians opened up for him.

With him I learned the routine of Caribbean music, he had a very positive attitude towards me. He would summon me before rehearsals to teach me how to play, he would take the score and sit with me at the piano: ‘Play like this’, he would tell me, and ‘play the acor-des this way, this is the tumbao, this is the phrasing’, all with a lot of patience”, he recounted.

“There was Pi¬chirilo on bass, Jorge Pérez on timbales and drums; and Joaquín Pérez on congas. Chicho Sarmiento, Clí¬maco Sarmiento’s son, played the alto saxophone; Pacho Aragón played the tenor saxophone. On trumpets Armando Galán, Raúl Lastra and Chino Acosta.

I did not record with Pacho’s orchestra because he did not record in that period, but I played a lot of his music and I still play it in Latin jazz.

Although he has lived outside the country for many years, when he returns to Barranquilla it is as if he had never left.

It shows in his confidence to walk the streets, to visit places, to call friends, to exchange anecdotes with people he barely knows.

He is a man who lives for music, to which he has dedicated a contagious enthusiasm. That is why when he comes, it is a pleasure to review his career.

“I come to take a little hot temperature and to bring my latest albums for the local public to get to know them,” he said.

In 1975 he formed an orchestra in Venezuela with which he worked at the Hotel Tamana¬co Internacional, while at the same time he was a pianist, administrator and producer of various musical projects in the recording industry of that country.

In 1979 he joined Dimensión Latina, an aggregation with which he recorded Di¬mensión desconocida (1979), el número uno con la núme¬ro uno (1980), Para siempre (1980), Combinación latina Nº 4 (1980), and Cuerda para rato (1981).

“In Dimensión Latina I spent three years with Andy Montañez, Argenis Carruyo and Gustavo Carmona, then I started the orchestra project with my name.

I also recorded with Andy Montañez as a soloist, and made arrangements in recordings for Velvet de Venezuela”.

Samuel also participated in the extraordinary Trabuco Venezolano, led by drummer Alberto Naranjo.

“With Trabuco Venezolano I participated in many concerts in Venezuela.

With them I recorded Irakere and Trabuco, in a live performance at the Poliedro de Caracas. I also recorded Imágenes Latinas.

In 1983 he recorded his first album with his orchestra, the hit was the song Ella no baila sola, which became his letter of introduction.

In 1984 he recorded his second album, repeating his success with the song Cara de Domingo, by the niuyorrican flautist Lou Perez.

The third album with his orchestra was produced in 1987, when he was already living in Chicago.

“When I left Dimensión Latina, Gustavo Cardona, Oscar D’León’s bass player, encouraged me to start my own orchestra.

One of the numbers was Ella no baila so¬la, and when it was played, people stopped to dance. That is why we decided to record that song.

I brought Frankie Paz, a boy from Maracaibo who had auditioned with Dimensión Latina as a replacement for Argenis Carruyo, but César Monje didn’t like it.

I told the boy, I’m going to have my orchestra soon and I’m going to bring you with me”.

Referring to his piano influences, Samuel recalls Noro Morales, Eddie and Charlie Palmieri, Richie Ray and Lino Frias.

Others such as Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk and Oscar Peterson, shaped his vision.

“I liked Noro Morales a lot, I had only one record of his, ‘Maria Cervantes’, which caught my attention since I was a child. One day I decided to arrange it a little differently. I still play it in my Latin concerts.

Del Real took up residence in Chicago in 1985. There he has continued his work moving between Latin dance music and Latin jazz.

I’ve been living there for 32 years, I have my orchestra, I give Latin jazz concerts, and I’ve also worked for other organizations in other cities like Minneapolis and Cleveland.

We do salsa and different Latin American rhythms. The music business has changed, it’s a big investment to make a record, and you have to project it to the singer, limiting the possibility of moving.

That’s why I decided to make Caribbean Latin jazz instrumentals; with that I expose my music without the need to write ten arrangements for a singer with whom you run the risk of him leaving”.

His recent recordings include the Pianos del Caribe series, which includes the discs Piano caliente, Piano jamboree and Piano navideño.

No one doubts that Barranqui jazz or the International Carnival of the Arts would be the perfect setting for his work. Plus, it would be a homecoming in style.

“I think it would be a great opportunity to showcase my music in my city. I am glad that in Barranquilla they are creating spaces like the Carnival of the Arts and the Caribbean Cultural Park, so that people have access to that part of the culture that is music”.

He passed away at the age of 67 on December 10, 2020.

Samuel del Real, who suffered from diabetes, died in Chicago, United States, where he had settled 35 years ago.

The Djembe is a percussion instrument belonging to the family of membranophone instruments

It originated in the ancient Mandinga Empire, approximately between the towns of Bamako (Mali) and Kankan (Guinea), from where it later migrated to Senegal, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso, forming an integral part of the music and traditions of the area.

It is believed that this migration was due to the Numu, who were (and still are) blacksmiths [[professionals considered guardians of certain powers.

They were in charge of making the Komo masks, performing circumcision and ablation of adolescents to mark their passage to adulthood, as well as sculpting and playing the yembes.

As a result of differences in shape, wood density, internal engravings and skin, there is a wide range of tones that can be emitted by the yembe.

Striking the skin near the center produces lower notes, striking it near the edge.

It is struck with the fingers together and stretched, but without leaving them glued to the drumhead, so that the sound comes out.

On the other hand, to produce the highest pitched sound, the slap is used.

The palm of the hand is slightly curved and the membrane is hit with the fingertips.

It is estimated that the djembe was invented approximately 3000 years ago by the African Maninka tribe, who used it as a ceremonial instrument.

The word yembé comes from the Bambara language and means together in peace.

Membranophones are musical instruments that produce sound through the vibration of a taut membrane or drumhead.

The membranes can be made of animal skin or synthetic material and the instruments can be mounted on wooden cylinders, ceramic vessels or gourds.

Membranophones can be played by percussion or rubbing and can have one or two membranes, closed or open bottoms.

Some examples of membranophones are:

– Bombo: A direct hit membranophone whose sound is extracted by striking it with a wooden striker.

– Snare: A membranophone instrument

– Drum: A percussion instrument with a resonance box, which is usually cylindrical, and a membrane called a drumhead that covers the opening of the box.

– Zambomba: A friction drum.

– Cuica: A friction drum

– Juque: A Costa Rican instrument that is a friction drum

– Mirlitón: A blown membranophone instrument.

Membranophone Africa This percussion instrument is of African origin, but its antecedents are Asian (Japan and China) places where it is widely spread and is known with the names “Kelontonga” and also known as “Den-Den Daiko”.

Membranophones. The membranophones produce the sound by means of the vibration of a tensed membrane. The vibration of this membrane can be provoked by hitting it, rubbing it or by voice (humming).

The castanets or “palillos” are a percussion instrument created by the Phoenicians three thousand years ago.

Edwin “El Calvito” Reyes. From combat to Beats

After participating in the largest military coalition in the history of the United States, Edwin “El Calvito” Reyes has shown that the phrase “If you dream that you can achieve it” is totally true. Dreams are achievable with perseverance, dedication and talent, qualities that this dreamy Sonero has, who will launch his record label soon for all Salseros lovers who support the new blood of the Salsa.

Edwin was born in Trujillo Alto (Puerto Rico) in 1974 and when he was 19 years old, he began his artistic career, playing and doing concerts of Plena (Folkloric Puerto Rican Music) in his hometown. Five years later “El Calvito” Reyes enlisted in the US Army in order to give a better future to his family, after a terrible work accident in his previous job (He was an Electrician).

During this year of change (1997) Edwin had his first opportunity in front of the American public as vocalist leader in a consolidated orchestra in these lands, “Papo salsa and his Tumbao” in Fort Stewart Army Post, GA, thanks to the expert eyes of Víctor Paris and Mr. Godreau, “Papo Salsa”.

From March 2003 to 2007, Edwin “El Calvito” Reyes went to combat four times in Iraq and once fought in Afghanistan, but he always felt the need to help relieve the stress of all the soldiers who were in those circumstances like him. In this way he created Saturdays of Salsa in combat for which he received help in the first instance from an U.S. civilian specialist in communications, Mr. Pérez, who contributed a large part of the necessary sound equipment to carry out this incredible idea at the beginning.

Later, Edwin with his percussionist and DJ skills in 2005 returns to Iraq but this time better prepared to carry out the Saturdays of Salsa parties during the fight. During this year he had his first performance in front of a crowd of soldiers and civilians accompanied by an orchestra of 14 musicians live, among which were: the Puerto Rican and master pianist José Pomales, Willie Báez, Julio De La Rosa, and Javier Solivan, among others …

Everyone playing outdoors in the main dining room at Camp Liberty where the stage was. From this success, the band continued its touches until 2007 in this warlike country with an orchestra of more than 15 pieces: Piano, Bass, Trumpets, Trombones, Tenor Sax, Conga, Timbale, Bongo / Bell, Drums, Vocalists and a sound master, with which this wonderful orchestra made a total of 25 presentations.  “We were flown like true artist, in helicopters from one base to another, to just perform and then return back to our original base… Playing at Saddam’s Palace (a true palace made of concrete and marble) was the highlight. Also, at Camp Slayer where the biggest dancing crew gathered was an adrenaline rush for us… All with the help of great people who really felt like I felt; boost our own moral in combat!” told us Edwin.

In parallel to his military career, “El Calvito” Reyes participated in the Latin Music Orchestra in the city of Savannah, GA, “Ron con Anís” by the dead musician David Mercado and of which in 2006 he would be its owner under the new name “Orquesta con Clase” reaching objectives such as: leading the Latin American Services Organization (LASO) Festival in Savannah with more than 6,000 attendees; They were the “Guests of Honor” for the Fiesta Atlanta Festival at the Olympic Centennial Park in Atlanta, Georgia, performing in front of 10,000 people. Also, they served as the backup band for: Salsa Legend, Larry Harlow, the 2011 Hotalanta Salsa Congress, and many more.

In 2011 he is part of a selection of elite musicians of the U.S. Army to form a Latin music band called “One & Only” idea of creation by The Army Marketing & Research Group (AMRG) and carried out by the musicians Carlos Negrón and Albert Sánchez. This band, similar to U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors sang Salsa, Merengue, Bachata and other Latin rhythms for the entertainment of their audience. During his tenure in this band he performed at the annual conventions of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), which is the largest nonprofit organization in America. He helped many Latinos obtain millionaire scholarships, he was master of ceremonies on three occasions contributing with his knowledge on “The importance to stay positive and reach that goal” and “How the army life will impact your life”.

From 2012 to 2016, he was the Official in charge of the Ensemble. He achieved the inclusion of more musicians to the group including female talent. He had the privilege of meeting political figures such as Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton and Ricky Rosello (current Puerto Rico’s Governor), as well as acting in front of world-renowned stars such as: his idol Gilberto Santa Rosa, Olga Tañón, Tito Nieves, Jennifer Lopez, and many luminaries of the country’s Hispanic television.

Edwin “El Calvito” Reyes, leader, visionary and humble was also the host of a radio show called “My Salsa Show” in WHCJ 90.3fm at Savannah State University. From there derives his nickname “El Calvito”, thanks to one of his fellow broadcasters of the station and since then he is known as Edwin “El Calvito” Reyes by all his fans.

“ … I play Timbales, Conga, Bongo, Bata, Campana and all minor percussion… I ask not to be considered a master percussionist, as I’m learning the craft of all, but so far I have mastered the playing and singing simultaneously.”

This Sonero, percussionist has composed several songs and has made numerous covers. “You are My Wife” (2016) with arrangements by Castor Ugarte was his first composition with lyrics inspired by his wife.

His most recent single “Mi Tierra Querida”, al Son de Bolero, (2018) showed that doing what he loves has been one of his best keys to his resounding ascent in this career. This composition of the “Virtuoso de la Salsa” Rey Torcat with arrangements of the same Edwin with Eric Maldonado (Owner and Master Engineer at Paris Recording Studios, Tampa, FL) and on the piano, Adam Perez, has been a symbol of hope for all Puerto Rican emigrants based in the U.S. “Mi Tierra Querida” was awarded by the Akademia Music Award for Best Song back in April 2018.

“Mi Ritmo se llama Zalsa” is a theme that he launched this year and invites the dancers to perform their best steps on the track with its fast paced. Lyric by Rey Torcat, produced by Eric Maldonado, and with the participation of: Archie Pereira (piano), Kevin Pagan (Bass), Luis Chafalote (trumpets), José León (trombones) and Ricardo Rodríguez (saxophone Bari). This song currently ranks # 1 in Salsa Tune in Barcelona, Spain, based on the Record Pool of “Gussi DJ” on Tune in Radio.

“Soneros de Sangre Nueva” is another song of his authorship and the third that works in conjunction with Rey Torcat. In this single they share together the interpreters: Josean Rivera “El Nuevo Amolador”, Edwin Lebron “Xtraordinario”, Nandy “El Sinsonte” (Conquistador Del Elemento) and Gumbay Navedo (Carmen Sol). Also, the musicians of great trajectory, such as: Banny Maldonado, Grammy Winner, (Timbales), Edwin “Pirulo” Reyes (Congas) and Kokoand Take (Bongo / Bell) and in the choirs the Lead vocalist of the legendary CORPORACION LATINA, Edgardo “Bambino” Otero participated in this hit. Similar to his two previous unreleased tracks “Mi Tierra Querida” and “Mi Ritmo se llama Zalsa”, “Soneros de Sangre Nueva” has had a great acceptance and support from the public knowledgeable appreciative about the new Salsa representation worldwide.

The covers “Ya te Olvide” (2017) original song by the successful Mexican singer Marco Antonio Solis, recorded in the state of Kansas with arrangements by Carlos Ugarte and “RAN KAN KAN. Just for the King”(2009), tribute to Tito Puente under the production of one of the best percussionists, David Lugo with different choirs, Xilofono or Marimba, Trombones, and solos by Conga and Timbal, have screened” El Calvito “Reyes at the top of the most outstanding relief Soneros Salseros today.

With 25 years of musical experience and more than 10,000 presentations around the world, Edwin has stepped on the best stages including the World Peace Festival at the Olympic Stadium in Seoul (South Korea) in front of 82,000 people. He also had appearances in more than 20 Salsa Social events in many clubs throughout the peninsula, participated in the Salsa Beach Festival in Pusan and in two Asia Salsa Congreses with the master trombonist’s band, Greg Peña.

Edwin, who currently resides in Palm Coast, Florida, and after 22 years of service in the U.S. Navy and retired as Chief Warrant Officer, is preparing his debut album to be released in 2019 and doesn’t discard in the future to continue working on behalf of Hispanic communities around the world as a motivational coach, always bringing optimism and hope for a better future for the Latins.
