Maja Petrović & Marko Miljević started dancing Tango in Zagreb, Croatia in 2002 in a small group of enthusiasts curious about this “new” dance. Only five years later they began giving regular lessons at the Tango Argentino Zagreb Dance School. Their first and most influential teachers were Pablo Rodríguez and Noelia Hurtado. Later they continued to study with Noelia and Carlitos Espinoza.

In 2014 they started to work with Tango professionally, holding workshops and performing all over Europe. In 2015 they had their debut in North America at Bailongo Tango Festival in Montréal, Canada.

Germán Cuestas started dancing when he was a teenager, and since then dedicated his life to music and Tango. He has a degree as a music school teacher and now uses this knowledge in his work as a Tango dancer.

He also has been a Tango DJ for many years and is the organizer of El Motivo Tango (a Milonga in Villa Malcolm’s club, Buenos Aires) and has taught in various Milongas and schools in Buenos Aires.Now he is based in Denmark, teaches and performs with Eva Lehrmann, around Europe, Russia and Argentina.

Eva Lehrman has been dancing different styles of dances most of her life, however it wasn’t until she met the Argentine Tango that she dedicated herself to dancing professionally. She travelled to Buenos Aires, where she soon started working in El Esquinazo, a newly opened Tango school, where she taught Tango and Yoga and there she also met Germàn. Today she mainly works in Copenhagen being an instructor, a DJ and a performer. She still spends a big part of her time in Buenos Aires, where she is part of a team who organizes Tango holidays.

Boris and Chris work to harmonize their distinct and varied backgrounds of dance training, biomechanics, and Tango to create their dance. The fundamental element of their Tango is “el abrazo”’ and the connection between two dancers. It enables them to communicate in an unspoken language that unites you to your partner, your partner’s body to yours.

They believe that even if two bodies are standing still in space, their embrace continues moving within and between them. In her experience of studying many other disciplines, Chris believes that this is what makes Tango so special, so unique and so rewarding, “alongside the technical details, the complexity of the steps and the music, in no other dance style have I experienced this sensation where dancers search for such a deep connection with their partner”.

Using knowledge and understanding of the body, their teaching method focuses on how to use the bodies to create movement and then how to transmit and receive this information through the embrace. Alongside steps and techniques, they will give you tools, foundations, and concepts that can be applied within your entire Tango world to discover different ways of moving.

All the workshops will take place in the four air-conditioned halls of the dance school on approximately 450 m². You will also find a lobby with a cozy bar and comfortable chairs, as well as some cloak & changing rooms. Wooden floors are dancers’ paradise and the bar will take care for your refreshments!

Gravity does not allow very much floating, but sometimes in your life you come to a place, where the laws of gravity do not apply any more. This place will give you a pleasurable experience, which will put you at ease and which transfers you into an unforgettable experience. The place where we just can relax and let your soul get some rest.

The panorama hall presents itself with a glazing from the bottom to the top and offers an unbelievable view over the city of Graz. It is one of the most popular event locations of the “Schlossberg”, the well-known landmark of Graz. Together with the stage hall it covers 250m2 of wooden dancefloors so that dancers can experience a most memorable evening.

Pirisalsa Orchestra

The music is the result of the creation of a rhythm that tries to convey a message that the artists give to their audience and depending on the voice, the lyrics, the instruments and above all the desire to transmit that feeling, they make people want to listen to it and dance to it.

The Orchestras became known for being dynamic groups, creators of rhythms and party entertainers; something that cannot be replaced by a DJ or digital music, since recorded music and live music are two different things.

In the state of Falcón, Venezuela, there is the Grupo Piritu, who make up the Pirisalsa Orchestra, they are a group of talented young people who, despite their young ages, know how to transmit the flavor of Salsa to their audience.

They emerged and were educated in schools and through the selection of the most outstanding children in music, they gradually gave rise to the orchestra, being a pleasant and rhythmic sound to the audience to date, not to mention that it is a group with many followers full of dreams and musical desires. They mention that “since our first presentation on October 19, 2011 to date we have not stopped working…”.

The Pirisalsa Orchestra plays SALSA, with a smooth style in its message and melody, despite the fact that the rhythm is very lively, thanks to the percussion instruments, showing us and maintaining its Latin, Afro-descendant, and Caribbean roots in its music.

They have had the opportunity to participate in several important events in Venezuela, such as the PDVSA Salsa Festival held in La Estancia, Caracas in two editions, where they managed to share with great bastions of this genre throughout Venezuela, especially in Caracas, there were also a Festival in Maracay, Aragua and recently at the Whatuyusei Festival in Punto Fijo, Falcón, where they shared with artists such as Omar Enrique, la Melodía Perfecta, Gustavo Eli, los Bois Servando and Florentino, among others.

However, their goal and desire is to take their music throughout Venezuela and abroad so that the whole world can listen to them, appreciate their talent and be able to project themselves as an orchestra, since when they are on stage in a presentation they sing full of a feeling of love but that is with great elegance, with a fresh, tender language, full of emotion and kindness, but always transmitting his deep love for his homeland Venezuela.

Fundación Cultural Madera 15 where Brotherhood, Sports, Dance and Salsa go Hand in Hand

By the end of the 70’s and beginning of the 80’s a group of young people from different parts of the country gathered by chance in the same sector 4 de las Mercedes in La Victoria, Aragua State, began to listen to the new genre of the time, the popular “Salsa”.

Each one with different tastes but without leaving the genre, they felt the desire to imitate the Venezuelan and international bands they knew through the Lps, so every weekend they organized themselves to play their instruments with musicians already studied and the guataqueros in an empirical way.

These meetings became more and more frequent and due to the need of an acquaintance of the zone to have a salsa group they decided to form the first salsa group of the sector called “El Quinto Sonero”, then years later with many of the members of the previous group they formed the group “Juancito y su Son” and years later the “Conjunto Sabor”.

It is worth mentioning that the rehearsals of the different groups took place in the homes of some of the members, playing songs by Ray Barreto; Eddie Palmieri; Dimensión Latina; Grupo Mango; Trabuco Venezolano Grupo Libre and of course Grupo Madera, among others.

By the end of the 80’s this same group of young people always supported by their families decided to formalize all the events that took place during the year, thus creating the “Madera 15 Foundation” unifying culture, sports, art and dance all in what was once a “Little Square” and over the years became a court, which would become its main location.

Its name is due to the admiration that everyone felt for Grupo Madera and product of its unexpected accident in which most of its members lost their lives on August 15, 1980.

For this reason the affection and the interpretation of many of their songs and the attendance to their concerts. Once the tragedy occurred, the passion for the Caracas group grew, specifically in the Marín neighborhood of San Agustín del Sur, which was invited to the inauguration of the Cancha in 1989, an invitation that was accepted and it was possible to enjoy three days of Afro-Caribbean songs and dances among neighbors and people close to the area.

From then on, cultural, recreational and sporting activities are carried out and one of the most important meetings is organized every year on December 31st, where the Guataca de Fin de Año is held, which began as an informal meeting of these young people every year-end, specifically on the 31st of the year, and continued with a soup on January 1st, welcoming the new year.

Currently by decree of the Mayor of the Municipality of Ribas in La Victoria Aragua State, specifically by Mayor Juan Carlos “Jaimito” Sanchez in his 1st term in 2012, the Municipal Day of Salsa is celebrated, and are invited to cultors and musicians from different parts of the country to participate in this special date with all attendees, which enjoy a unique day full of much feeling.

For years, all kinds of musicians, orchestras, groups and salsa characters that have exalted the salsa culture, as well as characters of the gaita and folklore, have passed through the festival.

Today, the tradition of the Guataca is still maintained, paying tribute to the life of its famous characters and remembering those who left for another plane and those who unfortunately emigrated.

Hand in hand with the music was also formed the dance group of the area called in its beginnings “Los Gurrugurru” which performed nationalist dances and sang aguinaldos and parranda every Christmas. Today there is still a dance group called “Danzas Tricolor” also dancing all the national folkloric dances.

Through both groups passed the great majority of the young people of the sector and after generations their children and now grandchildren, all under the direction of Griseida and Mileyda Batidas.

It is important to highlight some emblematic names of the foundation among them stand out:

Each and every week and weekend, the Festival presents a curated lineup of musicians, dancers, poets, and artists from around the world including the Moroccan trance music of Innov Gnawa with Book of J on May 12, northwestern Indian dance with Garba in the Gardens on May 19, the 2nd Annual Yerba Buena Gardens ChoreoFest on June 2 and 3, the most celebrated gamelan ensemble outside of Bali, Gamelan Sekar Jaya.

On June 9, powerhouse Afro-Venezeulan vocalist Betsayda Machado y La Parranda El Clavo with VNote Ensemble on June 16, three performances from Festival favorites Circus Bella on June 22 and 23, the all-women klezmer group direct from New York City Isle of Klezbos with San Francisco’s Fanfare Zambaleta on July 7, Ukulenny and Cynthia Lin’s SF Uke Jam Summer Uke-Splosion!

On July 14, Cuban saxophonist Yosvany Terry Sextet on July 28, the 40th Anniversary performance of the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band on July 29, one of Vietnam’s most celebrated traditional artists Vân Ánh Võ & The VA’V on August 25, Manila Disco Fever on September 1, and the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival commissioned piece from Marcus Shelby Orchestra – Blackball: The Negro League and the Blues on September 8. The Festival closes with the 18th Annual Halloween Hoopla on Sunday, October 28.

The popular series Let’s Go Salsa@Jessie!, the open-air salsa dance party in Jessie Square (near the Contemporary Jewish Museum), takes place on the third Thursday of each month from May to September from 6:00pm – 7:30pm.

Performers are the ‘New Mambo Retro Salsa’ group Cabanijazz Project on May 17, the nine-piece combo Bululú led byVenezuelan-born percussion master and vocalist Lali Mejia on June 21, the Bay Area’s inventive Cuban band Pellejo Seco on July 19, the U.S. State Department-sponsored Latin Jazz Ambassadors and the Mission’s own Annette A. Aguilar & StringBeans on August 16, and Los Mocosos vocalist and master salsero Manny Martinez y la Rebeldia on September 20.

This Festival brings the delightful Children’s Garden Series features interactive performances specially designed for kids and families every Friday from June to August in the Yerba Buena Children’s Garden at Fourth and Howard Streets.

The series presents performances by kid favorites: the 2018 Grammy-nominated Alphabet Rockers, Non Stop Bhangra,Māhealani Uchiyama, Parangal Dance Company, Circus Bella, Unique Derique, Caterpillar Puppets, Chelle! & Friends, Pi Clowns, Red Panda Acrobats, Venezuelan Music Project, Crosspulse, and Ka-Hon. The series ends with the wildly popular 18th Annual Halloween Hoopla on Sunday, October 28.

Conceived and directed by Abigail Munn and Joel Baker for Circus Bella, the show includes static trapeze, rope walking, juggling, contortion, unicycle, original clowning, acrobatics, and more.
