Bella Martinez “La Escritora Irreverente de la Salsa” en Cuarta de Ponce from Puerto Rico the Island of Enchantment.

Ángel “Papote” Alvarado, who is also a composer, percussionist, vocal leader, and founder of Grupo Esencia, manages culture by fertilizing our Afro-Caribbean roots every year, making sure to bring the National Afro-Caribbean Festival to Ponce’s La Cuarta neighborhood, where he grew up.  Usually, the event takes place in June of each year.  However, this year -due to the global health emergency brought on by the pandemic that still threatens us- the iconic annual festival was held from November 19 to 21, 2021 at its usual venue.

On Friday the 19th November 2021 and coinciding with Puerto Rican Day, Angel “Papote” Alvarado kicked off the festivities to usher in the 22nd edition of the festival that each year makes the neighborhood the center of our Afro-descendant culture.

This year, the festival paid tribute to Willie Rosario, Ottoniel Vélez, Jesús Chu López and Héctor Pochy Gastón.

The musical offerings on Friday 19 included:  Los Cimarrones, Robert Burgos and Descarga Zasón in addition to the stellar Míster Afinque. Willie Rosario’s orchestra has delighted with its unique compact format and has remained active for more than six decades under the direction of maestro Rosario himself, whom the salsa dancer keeps at the top of his preference within the environment that groups only connoisseurs.

The closing of the first night of the festival was preceded by the impeccable performance of the Willie Rosario Orchestra, a well-deserved tribute to the longest-serving bandleader in the salsa sound. Afterward, the author of the authorized biography of Mister Afinque -Robert Tellez- praised Maestro Rosario with some moving words.

Afterward, “Papote” Alvarado thanked Robert for his support to Afro-Caribbean cultural activities and presented him with a commemorative poster of the 22nd edition of the festival.  The poster contains a photo by a photographer who stands out as one of the most committed cultural connoisseurs of the salsa scene: Conrado Pastrano.

It is worth mentioning that journalist Robert Tellez, who is also known as “the one who knows the most about salsa” traveled from Colombia to Ponce’s Barrio La Cuarta to be part of the festival and specifically to accompany the artist who is the subject of his work “Willie Rosario, el Rey del Ritmo” during the tribute.  Maestro Rosario made us laugh when, in his usual serious and firm tone, he affirmed, microphone in hand, that he was grateful for the tribute, and at the same time said that he deserved it.

On Saturday 20, the following were presented: Boricua y de Mayagüez, Tribute to Héctor “Pochy” Gastón and Jesús López, Ángel “Papote” Alvarado and El Grupo Esencia, Roberto Roena’s Apollo Sound with Carlos Santos and Tito Cruz singing. On Sunday 21, the stage was decorated with Ausuba, Bambalué, Homenaje a Ottoniel Vélez, Guayacanes de San Antón and Abran Paso, with Pichíe Pérez and Rafy Santana singing.

This 2021 would have been the 23rd edition of the festival.  However, the 2020 edition was canceled.  In a stoic manner, the team in support of the persistence of the president and founder of the Comité Pro Nuestra Cultura – “Papote”- who has the unconditional support of William Rodríguez Thillet did not give up so that this 2021 edition would be achieved. Following all the rules that the COVID-19 protocol demands, the public was able to enjoy a luxury show.

Security and parking added comfort and convenience to the event.  The festival featured, as usual, a display of artisans and kiosks, with the best of Puerto Rican fritanga.

For more than two decades, which are easy to say but are twenty-two struggles for the benefit of culture and its permanence, Angel “Papote” Alvarado has kept our Afro-Latin culture afloat, beyond the border of the southern pearl. Congratulations!

Lots of good energy, health, and success to this musician and cultural manager who carries on his shoulders an invaluable legacy.  As for the rest, we look forward to the next edition of this unmissable festival that takes place every year.  In the meantime, let’s follow the transcendental feat of his Grupo Esencia.

Our Miami Correspondent for International Salsa Magazine Diana Marie has the honor and privilege to introduce us to an extraordinary Puerto Rican musician based in Miami, who from a very early age has been in the music scene, we are referring to Gumby Navedo.

Jesus M. Navedo Marrero, best known in the artistic musical field as GUMBY Navedo. He was born on December 22nd in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico.

Since he was a child, music was always present in his home as family and friends got together with musical instruments and formed a party in seconds. The first major influence on Gumby’s artistic career was his grandfather, Moises.

A well-known “Tresista” who infused joy by playing and singing for everyone. Gumby, who as a child was always surrounded by great musicians and performers, preferred to learn their music and unique rhythms.

At age 5, his cousin Carlos Morales, taught him the blows of the tumbler. Gumby fell in love with all the sounds of the percussion instruments and from there he began his musical career.

Being a teenager it was common to see Gumby playing the percussion of recognized local orchestras and accompanying exceptional musicians in the island.

The beginning of his musical education, was taught to him by the great music teacher Roberto Soler. Under the leadership of maestro Soler, Gumby participated in the middle school band and the municipal band.

Beginnings that gave him the foundation to his musical career as an interpreter and musician in different genres such as salsa, boleros, bomba y plena, jazz and all kinds of Caribbean music.

During his amazing  musical career, Gumby has played as the lead percussionist and the choir to many well renowned artists recognized internationally like Rolando La Serie, Olga Guillot, Celia Cruz, Israel Kantor, Carlos Oliva, Willy Chirino, Roberto Torres, Tito Allen, La Palabra, Conjunto Universal, Lefty Perez, Nino Segarra, Orquesta Exodo, Luis Enrique, Marco Antonio Muñiz, Alberto Beltran, Roberto Torres, Eddie Santiago, David Pabon, Mario Ortiz jr., Lalo Rodriguez, Yolanda Rivera, Cheo Feliciano, Ismael Miranda, Cachao ,Patato Valdes, Henry Fiol, Ángel Canales , Chamaco Rivera, Meñique, Adalberto Santiago, Hansel y Raul, Piro Mantilla, Cuco Valoy, Nestor Torres, Típica Tropical, Roberto Ledesma, Billy Ocean, Gipsy Kings amongst many more. Luis Guillermo Texidor Ortiz, more commonly known as Luigi Texidor, was born on January 20 1935 in the Puerto Rican town of Santa Isabel, more precisely in Colonia Florida.

The town of Santa Isabel in Puerto Rico is located south of the island of enchantment and borders Cuamo to the north, the Caribbean Sea to the south, Juana Díaz to the west, and Salinas to the east.

He was orphaned as an early age, so upon reaching the legal age, he joined the Army of the United States of America.

On returning to Puerto Rico in 1956, he studied to be a professor at the Catholic University of Ponce.

In parallel, he began participating in various groups as a percussionist (he played the bongo).

It was in the Orquesta Hispana de Juana Díaz where he had the opportunity to sing for the first time.

Then, he joined Antonetti y su Combo, until he finally joined the group Papo Lucca y su Sonora Ponceña in 1963.

After the departure of Papo León, Luigi Texidor became the lead singer of the group.

Between 1969 and 1977, he became the best-known voice of “La Ponceña” with the release of the LP Hacheros pa’ un palo and the albums Conquista Musical and El Gigante del Sur.

With this group, he made immortal songs such as “Fuego en el 23”, “Boranda”, “El Pío Pío”, “Bomba Carambomba”, “La Clave”, “Noche Como Boca’e Lobo”, among others.

It is noteworthy that in 1977, he participated in two albums by the Puertorican All-Stars, which is a group that brought the best Puerto Rican musicians and a sort of rival to the Fania All-Stars.

There he shared stages with Mario Ortiz, Andy Montañez, Paquito Guzmán, Lalo Rodríguez, Tito Allen and Gilberto Santa Rosa.

In 1978 he had to leave La Sonora Ponceña because of differences with singer Yolandita Rivera.

This motivated him to have outstanding participation in the orchestras of Tito Puente and Bobby Valentín (with whom he produced the song “Moreno soy”).

He also had a fleeting involvement in the record label Fania. It should be noted that he has always being one of the first salseros to qualify his verses with jocular and catchphrases.

In 1979 he launched solo and his best-known songs include “¿Quién trabajará?”, “Adiós don Gabino”, “Reina Negra”, “El llanto de las Flores” and “Tema de una Flor”, from the albums El Negrito del Sabor, El Caballero, Betún Negro and Sabroso.

Over the years, he made fleeting comebacks with La Sonora Ponceña, as part of the celebrations for its 40th and 45th anniversaries.

Luigi developed a very particular style for his soneos, highlighted by his fun style. With almost six decades of musical life, Texidor has forged a special place in the hearts of salseros. In the city of Medellín, lovers of good salsa have enjoyed the visit of the singer from the town of Santa Isabel on several occasions, the great Luis Guillermo Texidor Ortíz, “thank you, maestro, for all his music. This is a well-deserved tribute to one of the great Puerto Rican singers in our music”.

Today, very close to reaching the age of 80, he maintains good health. By his own admission, it is known that he does not smoke or try other substances harmful to his health.

From Santiago de Chile to the world

It all began when his father brought home a keyboard one afternoon. Cristian Cuevas, born in Santiago, Chile, began playing the piano at the age of 6.

It was immediately evident that he had a gift and by the age of 8 he was playing with local bands and artists. playing with local bands and artists, all over Chile. When Cristian was 9 years old, his talent caught the attention of Chilean media, and he became a constant musical guest on “Buenos Dias a Todos”, the best late-night show in Chile at the time.

due to the success and exposure gained while working on “Buenos Dias a Todos”, Cristian was contacted by the producers of Univision where he was asked to fly to Chile to work on the show here he was asked to fly to Miami FL, and perform on the TV show “Sábado Gigante”.

After performing on the show, Cristian was offered a permanent spot on Sábado Gigante’s children’s segment and Cristian at age 11 moved with his family to Miami where he began his musical career.

By the time Cristian was 17, he was teaching as an instructor for local middle schools and high schools in Miami such as Miami Killian High, Felix Varela High, and Glades Middle School.

When he was 18, Cristian began to gain recognition among the Miami music scene and quickly began his first tour with Sonora Carruseles and other artists in the Miami salsa scene.

Today, Cristian Cuevas is one of the toughest working musicians in South Florida, he is also working as a musical director and composer for television shows on various networks such as Telemundo/NBC and Mega TV, and whether he is performing at sold-out venues around the world, playing on national television for millions of viewers, or recording from his home studio.

At 30 years old, Cristian Cuevas continues to write his musical journey while currently working as a producer and arranging his own upcoming album where he is featured singing and playing the piano.

Work History: Cristian has performed and toured the world with world-renowned award-winning artists in the Latin music industry such as: Jon Secada, Julio Iglesias Jr, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Oscar D’ Leon, Elvis Crespo, Charlie Zaa, Tito Nieves, La India, Luis Enrique, Sheila E., among others.

While on tour Cristian has also shared the stage with names such as: UB40, Kool & The Gang, Judith Hill, Willie Colon, José Feliciano, Rubén Blades, Gloria Trevi, among others.
