History

The National Zalsa Day was created in 1984 by Pedro Arroyo, Z-93 Programming Director, who always had the desire to celebrate an event where the talent of popular salsa music, its composers and performers would be recognized, to present it to the great public that loves this tropical genre.

Since its first year, the great event has seized a public eager to enjoy this live music.
The support was total and it immediately positioned itself as the annual concert of the people of Puerto Rico and visitors from other countries.

Since its inception, the National Day of the Zalsa was dedicated to some figure of this genre, as a recognition of their talent and their roots in the public.

National Zalsa Day 2020

On March 8, the 37th edition of the National Salsa Day will be held at the Hiram Bithorn Stadium, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

We often hear that salsa in Puerto Rico is not having a good time or that the atmosphere is not what it used to be. However, each time before. However, every time National Salsa Day is announced, everything changes.

Those who live on the island rub their hands to wait for the big moment and those who arrive from abroad begin to check plane tickets and schedule a little vacation.

In 2020 it will not be the exception. The station Z93 announced a tremendous salsa billboard with Eddie Palmieri, Sonora Ponceña, Oscar D’ León, Ismael Miranda, Lalo Rodríguez and India.

In addition, Tony Vega, Ray de la Paz, Tito Rojas and NG2 have been confirmed as part of the great salsa party. This has caused fans on social networks to begin to express themselves with different opinions about the chosen artists.

Perhaps the balance tilts favorably towards the more classic salsa and not so much towards the proposals of the youngest (except NG2), but let’s see how this formula works for Zeta.

La Candela Salsa Orchestra

La Candela Salsa Orchestra, the band is made up of eight musicians settled in Tenerife Canary Islands

La Candela is a small independent orchestra that in recent years has made a place for itself among the preferences of salsa dancers.

Her proposal is aimed at “hooking” the dancer with the original rhythms of salsa such as son montuno, guaguancó, mambo or chachachá, recovering the sound of the era in which what is known today as Salsa was forged.

The band is made up of eight musicians based in Tenerife (Canary Islands).

Its target audience is the salsa dancer on1 & on2, a great consumer of this type of music.

However, they have also conquered the hearts of the salsa music lovers who are staunch consumers of hard sauce.

The live La Candela show is a roller coaster of sensations that aims to spread joy and good vibes with a varied repertoire in terms of the danceable rhythms that are included within the salsa genre.

With him they have been presented in Spain and in other European countries such as Germany or Switzerland throughout these five years of activity.

La Candela’s style is inspired by the repertoire and execution style of the master Joe Cuba and his Sextet.

They have brought back to life some of their best classic songs that are still a reference for the dancer today.

With this spirit, her first musical project was born: On Fire, which was released in November 2015 and was a very good business card.

The album includes some classic songs by maestro Joe Cuba, such as “La Palomilla”, “Clave Mambo” or “El Ritmo de Joe Cuba”, along with self-written songs such as our first two singles, entitled “Es Guaguancó” and “For her”.

In 2017 and thanks to the executive production of Batlei Productions, a new project by La Candela was born with a closer sound and with many new features, without leaving behind our essence, headed by the first single titled “Se Prentó”, On Time moves between the primitive and the new, rescuing jewels and offering deserved tributes to some of the great pioneers of Afro-Cuban danceable music, like Tito Rodríguez or Frank Grillo “Machito”.

They are currently preparing what will be their third studio album with a new line-up of Musicians

Women in music: Carmen Laboy tells of a full life, without regrets

Talking with Puerto Rican saxophonist Carmen Laboy is so pleasurable that it becomes a therapeutic experience for the listener as she leads the musical journey that has become her working life.

The enthusiasm with which she talks about her work is contagious. With that effervescence that characterizes her, for thirty years she balanced her work as a teacher with artistic contracts that led her to perform on countless stages. As an educator, until her retirement in 2012, she headed the Music Department at Columbus High School in New York. As a musician she remains active and current, accompanying when hired and conducting when it is her turn

Talking with Puerto Rican saxophonist Carmen Laboy is a pleasure.

She began her story by holding up a book of photographs while laughing out loud at the images that show a life surrounded by music greats at countless concerts.

Neither at the age of nine when she began taking private piano lessons, nor at the age of twelve when she auditioned for a place at the Escuela Libre de Música in her native Ponce, did she imagine that thanks to music she would travel the world accompanied by her inseparable baritone saxophone. Today she reflects and reports a full life, with no regrets.

Graduated from the Interamerican University of San Germán with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education and Performance, she obtained her Master’s degree in Music Education and Orchestration from Herbert H. Lehman College in the Bronx, New York; but not before having been awarded a scholarship as an outstanding student by the Vienna International Music Center in Austria.

The woman in music Carmen Laboy gives an account of a full life, with no regrets.

The saxophonist Pete Miranda also connected her to the New York music scene when orchestras on Puerto Rican soil denied her a place because she was a woman, forcing her to leave the island that taught her to love the music she continues to treasure and share with the world.

She decided not to comment on this unfortunate rumor. She preferred to thank that from then on she has not ceased to make music with large format orchestras (big band), delivering Latin music. Colleagues such as Tito Puente, José Madera, Eddie Montalvo, Jimmy Delgado, José Alberto “El Canario” and Frankie Morales have allowed the maestro to play her instrument while accompanying them or when she assumes the musical direction, as the case may be.

The rejection to which she was subjected, which at first glance seems to have been a stroke of luck, did not divert her from her goal. On the contrary, she found in it the strength to blow in other lands. More than five decades of musical work at the helm of her baritone saxophone with the orchestras of Tito Puente, Machito, Ray Santos, Joe Cuba, Frankie Morales, Tito Rodríguez, Jr., The Big 3 Palladium Orchestra, Kit McClue Big Band and Harbor Conservatory Latin Band; as well as having accompanied Choco Orta, Paquito Guzman, Andy Montañez and Cano Estremera -among others- attest that her priority has always been to remain active in the music scene; this while wearing the same uniform as her male counterparts, be it a tuxedo or a tie. Among musicians, Carmen Laboy lets the music do the talking, far from worrying about her gender.

This year the privilege of conducting the Super Orchestra of the National Zalsa Day 2023 is for Maestro Isidro Infante, March 19 at the Hiram Bithorn Park in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

For many years the most important salsa event in Puerto Rico and internationally. Thanks to Z-93 and the entire SBS family. Mr. Alarcón, Víctor Roque, El Cacique and all the executives involved in such an important event.

We will also have Buho Loco and El Hachero, among others.

The radio station Zeta93FM and its sister company, LaMusica.com, announce the thirty-ninth edition of the National Zalsa Day; an award-winning concert, which, on this occasion, will pay a special tribute to the 50th anniversary of one of the most recognized orchestras in the world, La Típica 73.

Known as the pioneers in performing the famous “Descargas musicales”, Adalberto Santiago, José Alberto “El Canario”, Tito Allen and Johnny “Dandy” Rodríguez, have already confirmed their participation and we are proud that the members of this legendary band, which left such a deep mark on the salsa genre, have decided to join us in this celebration.

On April 20, 2023, the 100th anniversary of the birth of legendary timbalero Tito Puente, his son.

Tito Puente Jr., along with great guest artists such as Orestes Vilato, Nicky Marrero, Endel Dueño, Frankie Figueroa, Frankie Morales, John “Dandy” Rodríguez and José Madera celebrarán playing on stage the greatest hits of the “King of Latin Music”, among which are: “Oye como va”, “Ran Kan Kan” and “Para los Rumberos”.

“Puente’s legacy of more than 50 years, known as ‘The King of the Timbal’, ‘The composer and musician of the eternal smile’ and ‘The godfather of Latin jazz and salsa’, will be exalted in front of more than 20,000 people at DNZ2023 and we are sure that all salseros will enjoy this presentation,” said announcer Marcos Rodríguez “El Cacique”.
