Salsa Casino is a dance style that originated in Cuba, incorporating elements of Afro-Cuban dances like Son and Rumba, alongside figures and turns inspired by the Rock ‘n’ Roll craze that drew North Americans to the island in the 1950s.
This dance features a wide variety of movements; watching it makes your feet want to move and the rhythm becomes infectious—so you just have to start dancing! The “Rueda de Casino” Festival is a prime example of this style in action.
Cuban Salsa involves circular movement patterns; partners lock eyes briefly before changing direction—a feature that distinguishes it from other salsa styles, which tend to rely more on linear movement.
The term “Rueda de Casino” refers to a group dance requiring a minimum of two couples to form a circle, where various figures are performed to the rhythms of salsa, merengue, and bachata. Rueda de Casino relies on a dynamic of partner rotation and synchronization, driven by the “calls” or cues given by a singer or leader who names the figures for the rest of the group to execute.
Sometimes, the leader calls out or signals turns that might seem confusing or complex to an outside observer; however, participating in the circle is incredibly fun and entertaining.
Every dance step brings a pleasant surprise, and the key is simply staying attentive to the rhythm. Dancing becomes almost like a game, with couples trying to respond effectively to the leader’s cues to avoid falling out of the Rueda. The leader’s skill shines through in the grace and creativity of their calls, which are often embellished with phrases or short stories; these add a touch of playfulness to the dynamic, making the Rueda a truly joyful experience. This enjoyable and dynamic dance originated in Cuba, where its rules were established; consequently, any couple that loses the rhythm must drop out of the *Rueda*.

When traveling to Cuba, it is common to see *salsa casino* competitions during festivals or Carnival celebrations where two *ruedas* face off; the winning group is the one that makes the fewest mistakes and demonstrates the greatest fluidity and grace in its dancing.
