Multi-instrumentalist Ian Dobson talks about his trips and academic background

American artist Ian Dobson, like many of his compatriots, could not resist the charms of Latin music and its huge diversity of rhythms, so today he talked with us about the way he walked to become the talented multi-instrumentalist he is today.

How Ian became interested in music

With just five years old, Ian already took a genuine interest in playing the drums and did not have any other family members who also liked music, except his aunt, who was a violinist. Although he does not have a very special motivation to love this instrument, he remembers that when he was 12, someone showed him a samba rhythm on his own drums, and he liked it so much that he continued playing it himself until perfectioning it. As a teenager, he was very involved in jazz, which also led him to Latin jazz and other genres derived from it.

On reaching majority, he had already discovered a little more of Latin music, so he began studying Spanish in order to understand it better, which of course helped him a lot for the following years. His curiosity about this colorful culture was such that he embarked on a series of trips to many Latin American countries, one of which was Venezuela, more specifically Margarita Island, in 1988. Ian wanted to practice his Spanish and see what rhythms he could find in that country, the most popular being salsa and merengue.

Genres and countries that most influenced Ian

Among the Latin American countries we can name are Venezuela, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Cuba. He also had the opportunity to play on several cruise ships and visit many Caribbean islands.

Each and every one of these countries had things that caught his attention musically. In the case of Venezuela, Ian was able to study the maracas during his master’s degree in percussion in Washington. One of his teachers was Euclides Aparicio, with whom he was able to learn much more about the music of this nation.

The artist points out that the country that most aroused his attention was Cuba, but he assures us that he liked all of them due to the musical and cultural diversity he found on all his trips, and he hopes to return to the same destinations someday.

Mexico was the country where he spent more time, staying there for a total of six months.

Academic background

Ian has a very interesting academic background that has provided him with a huge amount of knowledge applicable to his career. We can mention the University of Lisbon, where he was studying Portuguese and found it fascinating because there were many people from the African colonies, resulting in this music permeating Portugal and mixing with local music. One of its most renowned composers was Fernando Lopez-Graça, whom Ian had the opportunity to meet during his stay in the European country.

He became so interested in this subject that he wrote essays on how Brazilian music influenced Portuguese music and what role Africa played in all of this. Ian had already earned his bachelor’s degree from Pomona College, so he found all these topics very interesting and took them into account when it comes to studying music.

He also studied jazz at the Oberlin Conservatory, and although he did not complete his classes there, everything he learned obviously helped him a lot later on. At the University of Washington, he earned a bachelor’s degree in percussion and learned much more about music from a purely academic point of view.

Ian the multi-instrumentalist

Ian studied timpani, marimba, vibraphone, piano, drums, percussion, and many other instruments throughout his career, so he can be considered a multi-instrumentalist who has sought to specialize in as many areas of music as possible.

During our conversation, Ian showed us through video call some of the instruments he was going to play that same day, such as steel drums, an electronic marimba, a drum set, a ukulele, DJ equipment, and so on.

He assures us that he is capable of playing these instruments and others during his performances, but he loves steel drums and the ukulele, which are a fundamental part of his repertoire.

While it is true that Ian has no private students right now, he previously offered music lessons for some time, gave workshops and created online spaces for his students and followers to learn from his experience.

Today, he only offers concerts, but he always tries to make them as educational as possible. In fact, he always has a few extra pairs of drumsticks that he offers to some of his concertgoers so they can play themselves while Ian explains what to do. This makes the performance much more interactive and dynamic thanks to audience participation.

The most satisfying aspect of being a teacher was to see his students gain much more self-confidence, which led them to pursue their goals with greater intensity. No matter how bad his mood may be at any given moment, he is always happy to see others learn and enjoy what they do.

Somaly Zapata She Shows Us Her Musical History

Somaly Zapata Santana is a Puerto Rican who was born on July 24, 1988 in the town of Bani, Dominican Republic. From a very young age, she showed inclinations for musical art, getting to participate in different social events. Her first song was a Mother’s Day gift to her grandmother when she was 13 years old. As the years passed, its melody and lyrics developed in the genres of Salsa, Merengue, Balada, Bachata or a fusion of them, giving it a characteristic that other songs do not have.

She was influenced by great tropical artists such as Milly Quezada, Olga Tañon, Celia Cruz, La India, among others; However, he did not show his voice to the public at that time because he was a very shy person, but always with a musical spirit deep inside.

She began to perform in different activities, imitating only the movements of Milly Quezada and mimicking her great themes almost perfectly. In her adolescence she began to discover herself as an artist on a vocal level through her lyrics, taking classes on topics related to this art, writing situations with no personal experience, but which were interesting for a composer hungry to express her most intimate feelings.

In 2011 he decides to go to work in the US (Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts) as a cultural exchange, which allows him to acquire knowledge and in turn save money to be able to professionally record his first song. From that moment on, he began his artistic career at the hands of the prominent Dominican musician/arranger Juan Valdez Ybet, who fusing ideas, supported by the great career of Mr. Valdez and the magic of the singer’s lyrics, launched from gradually the different singles of the artist; Not to mention, he is a member of ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers).

Antonio Doza (Doza Dance Company, New York):

He is dancer, Actor, Model, Health & Fitness Advisor, Founder and Owner of Doza Dance Company from New York City. Known for his great performance presence, Antonio brings so much heat to the stage that he guarantees all eyes are on him.

As an instructor, he brings his intriguing style with his amazing Spinning, Isolation, Body Movement, Styling, Lead and Following, and Technique to his workshops and classes. He is featured in the salsa documentary La Epoca Pt.2 and is featured in various music videos by many top name commercial artists.

Antonio has traveled throughout the world teaching and showing off his talents. Antonio began dancing at the age of three. After many years of studying hip-hop and modern he took an interest in dancing Salsa. In 2008, he trained with the world renown, Clavekazi Dance Company, directed by Shaka Brown. He is currently touring, advising for Visalus, directing his dance company & acting.

Anya Katsevman (New York):

Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Anya Katsevman has been living in the United States since 1993. She began her dance training at the age of ten. After watching her brother become National Champion, Anya developed her own competitive drive that hasn’t stopped since.

She has won over 20 prestigious world titles in the international Latin dance arena, including Eastern United States Championships, Ohio Star Ball, La Classique Du Quebec, American Star Ball and the United States Open Championships. She has also starred in touring shows Burn the Floor and Dancing with The Stars. Anya also took part in numerous television productions including Sabado Gigante, Good morning America and multiple programming on Univision.

Anya has also danced for many latin artists such as El Gran Combo and Gilberto Santa Rosa. Often referred to as the future of salsa, Anya’s combined background of training, dynamic stage presence, elegance, graceful style, feminine approach, and strong technical action Anya quickly became one of the most sought after Latin dancers in the world. Currently, specialize in teaching all levels, coaching competitors and current champions and adjudicating competitions worldwide.

Delille “Mambo D” Thomas (New York):

Delille Thomas, also known as “Mambo D”, is one of the world’s most creative and dynamic Latin dance performers and instructors, internationally recognized for his pure style and virtuosity.

His dance background includes extensive training in Jazz, Modern, Hustle and Latin (Afro, Mambo, Cha-Cha, Tango) and various Caribbean and street dances. Since October 1992, Mr. Thomas has been teaching Mambo classes and conducting special workshops in New York City and various parts of United States and the world.

Ernesto And Denisse (Florida/New York):

Ernesto ‘El Watusi’ Bulnes was born in Honduras and raised in Miami, Florida, the city where he discovered his passion for dance. His initiation into Salsa began with training under the Mayan International Champion, Danny Bravo, an instructor who inspired Ernesto’s distinct dancing style.

Through training across various dance disciplines, he has developed his own style, a fusion of various arts and techniques that make him a distinct member to any dance floor.

After years of training, in 2011 Ernesto founded his own school, Potencia Latina Dance. Born in Miami with an Argentinean heritage, Denisse Cambria has accomplished many of her life goals starting with becoming one of the most well-known and recognized “Salsa” dancers in Florida, USA.

She has taught and performed with many top dance companies including Shaka Brown, Jayson Molina, Al “Liquidsilver”, Casa Salsa Dance Studio, Salsa Lovers Dance Studio, Project Generation, Energy One, Salsa Heatwave and Salsa Mia. She also competed at the ESPN World Salsa Championships with her partner Alfredo DiNatale.

After a total of 10 years of dancing salsa, she continues to enrich her craft with her partner Ernesto Bulnes and the New York Movement Competition team who are the new Professional Large Team WSS World Salsa Champions of 2016.

DJ Efrain “Frankie” Flores is The Main Resident DJ for the Renowned Baila Duro socials and festivals in Cleveland, OH and is working actively at keeping Classic Hard and Rare Salsa alive. He ignited his passion for music when he first started spinning house music in the basements of warehouses in Cleveland during the early 90s.

Dj Gonzo (Texas):

The musician, producer and DJ was born and raised in El Callao, Peru. At the age of 17, he moved to New York City. He studied music at Queens College music school and learned Latin percussion at Boys Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts located in El Barrio, NYC.

His musical studies helped him develop an eclectic taste, and led him to the authentic salsa vieja sound for which he is known. DJ Gonzo’s unique style and soundly rich music selection has made him one of the most influential and top salsa DJs in the U.S. In September 2014, DJ Gonzo launched DJ Gonzo Productions, and signed salsa legend piano virtuoso, Mr. Alfredito Linares.

DJ Gonzo productions’ first album was released the first week of November 2014. The album “DJ Gonzo presents Alfredito Linares – Salsa Pa Todo El Mundo” includes 10 dance floor killer tracks and is now a favorite by salsa DJs world-wide.

Dj Mike Calderon (Miami):

Mike Calderon is a native born and raised in the Magic City of Miami with descendents from Quito, Ecuador. At 21, he started taking Casino salsa lessons and that is where his journey to become a very popular local DJ began. Mastering Casino, he took his dancing to the next level with LA Style and On2 on his own with no classes, just by being in the socials and with other dancers.
