The SF Bay Area live music scene has been slowly reopening since the Summer and these are the latest developments. The Seahorse in Sausalito continues to offer live Salsa on Sundays in November. The Sunday Salsa calendar for November includes rising Salsa star Carlos Xavier on Nov. 7, Edgardo Cambon y Candela on Nov. 14, Louie Romero and Mazacote on Nov. 21 and Anthony Blea on Nov. 28. The live Sundays also feature the DJ music of KPOO/KPFA DJ Jose Ruiz.

Space 550 at 550 Barneveld in SF that was offering Live Salsa with Bachata and Kizomba rooms on Friday and Saturdays are resuming their live music offerings on Friday nights. The popular Friday nights cater to the dancers featuring popular bands such as Orquesta Borinquen, Julio Bravo and Salsabor and VibraSON plus Salsa Congress type of DJ’s on the decks.

The Ramp at 855 Terry Francois Blvd in San Francisco continues to offer Salsa at their popular outdoor venue that offers live Salsa every Saturday from 5 to 9 pm and resident DJ Mendy continues his DJ sets until 11pm. Their November calendar features N’Rumba on Nov. 6, Orquesta La Original w/lead vocalist Alexis Guillen on Nov. 13, Karabali with Karl Perazo (of Santana) and Michael Spiro on Nov. 20 and La Clave Del Blanco on Nov. 27.

Rocky’s Market at Oakland’s Brooklyn Basin has finished their events season for the year. This new outdoor venue has been a welcomed addition to the local scene and has made quite a splash since offering live Salsa, Afro-Cuban, World music, Comedy and Dance shows. All-star percussionist Javier Navarette is the curator for the Modupue Sundays Latin shows. Dancers have enjoyed the live music of the SF Charanga All Star reunions featuring Dr. John Calloway, Anthony Blea, Marco Diaz, Christelle Durandy, Orlando Torriente and others, Edgardo and Candela, Pellejo Seco, La Mixta Criolla, Mio Flores Habana All Stars and Navarette and his all-star Socially Distanced Friends band! I look forward to next year!

Speaking about Anthony Blea…the all-star violin virtuoso has started a new Friday night scene at the Gestalt Bar, 3159 16th Street near Valencia in San Francisco. Blea, led his popular Anthony Blea y Su Charanga (aka Charanson) for many years and was part of legendary SF based bands such as Orquesta Batachanga and Tipica Cienfuegos. Blea is featuring his hot quartet which includes bassist Ayla Davila. Patrons can expect a hot descarga (jam session) with special guests to sit in every Friday night.

Popular Timba/Cuban music DJ Walt Digz has moved his El Timbon Wednesday nights to the Slate Bar 2925-16th Street between Capp and South Van Ness in SF. The Peruvian restaurant Kimbara that now occupies the former large space that was part of Bissap Baobab on 3380-19th Street in SF’s Mission District is now offering DJ Salsa nights on Wednesday nights….Cigar Bar, 850 Montgomery Street in San Francisco continues to keep their doors open to Salsa aficionados and dancers on weekend nights. Recent bookings have included their Halloween bash featuring the dynamic Edgardo Cambon and Candela. Patrons can enjoy their drinks, food and cigars at this established North Beach venue for Latin music with no cover.

Blades will be performing selections of his current critically acclaimed recording Salswing as well as his vast repertoire of hits and crowd favorites. Gilberto Santa Rosa “El Caballero De La Salsa” and his orchestra will be at the San Jose Center For The Performing Arts on Friday, November 12th. Santa Rosa released one of the best Salsa recordings of the year “Colegas” last Fall featuring all-star duets with Tito Nieves, the late Tito Rojas, Issac Delgado, Herman Olivera and others!….Grammy award winners Grupo Niche from Colombia will be appearing at Roccapulco in SF on Saturday, November 20th as well…..Superstar Marc Anthony will finally perform after several postponements at San Jose’s SAP Center on Friday, December 17th. Anthony is riding high on the charts with Pa’alla Voy, his remake of the group Africando’s Yay Voy 90’s salsa classic.

Kiko Ortega (Seville – Spain) and Christina Schirjaev (Hamburg – Germany) are the organizers of the event in Switzerland that highlights Bachata, the Latin dance with the most sensual movements and one of the most popular of the last decade.

Bachata Xtreme 2021 will be based on the Dominican rhythm, giving 6-hour workshops that include the clean and social style, working in pairs with the primary purpose of achieving an impressive connection between the two, and offering additional detailed information on the concepts of Lead and Follow in this Latin dance that will improve your skills with great success. World Music Festival 2021 presents Arturo y su Azucaribe in concert on the last Tuesday of November. This band integrated into Swiss society but whose music is molded to their cultures of origin takes a tour of traditional Cuban melodies.

This orchestra founded in 2012 displays its talent during concerts with the Guaguancó, Son Cubano, and Boleros fusing them with the Salsa hits of the last two decades of important personalities such as Héctor Lavoe and Marc Anthony among many others.

Arturo y su Azucaribe released Llegó Mi Son, their first record production in January 2019, with unpublished compositions written by the band´s members with the production and direction of the bassist and conductor Arthur Furrer.

So, remember to stay in Zurich and dance to the rhythm of Salsa at this week-long festival.

Abrázame is a Latin event that takes place every month and brings the most current Puerto Rican Salsa, New York On2 style, as well as the best of Cuban Salsa, Bachata, Cha-Cha, and other Afro-Caribbean rhythms.

Any Body Can Dance Revives The Latin Party In 2022

After a long absence as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, Any Body Can Dance (ABCD) returns to the arena of major Latin music events in the capital of the United Kingdom in Europe.

ABCD will be the great school for four days of the best dancers with an international projection of the rhythms: Salsa, Bachata, and the musical genre Kizomba.

In this 17th edition, there will be no time or access restrictions. It is calculated for an audience of close to 1,300 people (success achieved in their16th edition), there will be four huge party rooms to dance in a style all night while maintaining adequate space. You will also have air conditioning and ventilation zones in each room to ensure that heat is never a problem. The lineup of artists present will be even larger than their predecessor events with more than 30 dancers on line performances, qualified instructors in each musical genre, and 11 DJs mixing the best and most varied Afro-Caribbean music every night.

ABCD gives you unforgettable moments with your dance family to remember for a lifetime!

  • If you are going to school by car, follow these instructions: Leave the school building on your right, turn right at the traffic light, and then take the third right. At the end of this street, there is a large door to your right. That is the parking lot where you can park your vehicle for free.
  • But, if you decide to go on foot you can access the school from Chalk Farm Station (2 minutes), Camden Town (7 minutes), and finally, you can also get there through Belsize Park (18 minutes).

I have known DJ. Andy since he was the resident DJ. at the Embassy Suites in Isla Verde (Puerto Rico) for the salsa nights that I remember attending religiously every Saturday.

However, everything changed when one Saturday night we went to the weekly event as usual.  There we realized that DJ Andy was no longer there.  They say that necessity is the mother of invention.  It must have been out of sheer necessity that the man who would later become DJ Louie Love suddenly learned to play records on his own and without having planned it quite abruptly.

So, years later, destiny took me to the American capital because of a highlight of which there is no longer only the memory.  From that highlight that I would like to forget, in Washington, DC I remember with a deep affection to have met again with the one who had already been called “the most danceable”: DJ Andy.  Life and its twists and turns, we lost track of each other again until one day during one of my missions to New York I decided to go for a little dance without knowing that there I would meet again with DJ Andy.  Andy was already making his way in the Big Apple, the same place where salsa was cooked more than half a century ago.

Anyway, what we came to, to share with you my impression of the third album in which DJ Andy immerses himself in a parallel way in his facet as executive producer.  So, I am reviewing this catchy collection of fifteen tracks because I loved the programming and the variety of what I consider a very complete album, while achieving a first class musical performance.

Consejo Salsero (Venezuela All Stars)

Despite being performed by Venezuela All Stars, the arrangement of this salsa song is in the best New York style and very well done.  The title track opens the listener’s senses in an invasive but good way; something like a sure way to arouse curiosity about the production and the tracks that follow it.  Marcial Istúriz is as always a sure shot.  Good voice, impeccable rhythm and one of those sonorous sounds that could make him the new owner of sonorous music.  I summarize here from my corner without offending anyone, Marcial is a great sonero.

The son came to the city (Secreto a Voces)

If not the most, one of the most danceable songs of the production. Bravo!

Como se atreve (Renzo Padilla y su orquesta)

The singer’s voice is fresh and synchronized with the kind of lyrics that ask for another chance and shout sincerity.  Before the second minute, the bongo takes over the transition announcing the mambo and the take-off of the “trip” injected by the pregones and the play on words in the soneos.  The winds are carried by a trombone played with cleanness and precision.  The end is announced with a percussive interplay between the winds and the piano, which almost takes center stage without dulling the leather beats.

Señora Rumba (Julio Cortez and his court)

The singer, once again, fits the theme like a glove, since his voice recalls the metallic melody that a bravo theme requires.  The piano harmonizes perfectly with the coros and percussion.  Here there is a perfect harmony between piano, conga and timbales. It seems to me that I hear a xylophone flirting with the conga, without detracting from the piano.

Mary Juana (Carlos Guzmán y su orquesta)

The introduction of the song reminds me of the arrangements of the glory days of Orquesta La Solución, but with a bongó playing in the arrangement.  The trombones announce themselves early on and ask the bongo for permission to join them around the first minute.  The piano harmonizes and gives way to the brass without conflicting with the musical change that around the third minute adopts a style of those with which Wayne Gorbea established his sound.  Masterful the way in which the arrangement moves through varied styles without running over the flow of the music.

Salsa pa’ ti (Grupo Tahona)

This is a very heavy song, one of those that starts with the chorus without shyness.  The boldness of the arrangement threatens to go straight to the mambo in a very elegant way.  A gentle piano solo crosses over from a minute and a half in.  The piano solo gives way to a melodic trumpet solo that doesn’t allow screaming.  The conga takes the lead from just before the third minute, making sure that the brass does its thing, in anticipation of the return of a piano that dictates the chords of the distant line.  All in all, this is a very tasty track.

Quiéreme (Gumby Navedo and his orchestra)

The interpretation sounds great and the singer’s voice is one of those indisputable and unforgettable ones.  The lyrics are worthy of the interplay between the saxophones and the rest of the wind instruments.  At three and a half minutes the pregón changes with a lot of class and distinction before handing over to the saxophones at the end to give way to the closing, which the cueros make precise.

I come from New York (Son del monte)

The flute enters quite early and quite forcefully.  The violins match the flutes and the typical charanga bell ringing.  I imagine that Andy wanted to include a variety of rhythms within the range of Afro-Caribbean rhythms and manages in the process to give us a complete collection.  Even dancing pachanga doesn’t let us forget. Thank you!

Vengo del Congo (Julio Estrada y su orquesta)

The arrangement of the song is one of those classics that could be used as an example to demonstrate the salsa sound without pretension or fuss to anyone who has never heard salsa before.  At two and a half minutes, Julio Estrada plays a heavy piano solo before the mambo enters in all its splendor.  Winds, timbales, conga and piano come together to take us on a journey into a synchronized, non-competitive melody.

Pa’l bailador (La Negramenta)

The introduction of this unquestionably salsa song gives prominence to the baritone saxophone in a flirtation that walks between salsa and boogaloo. However, the boogaloo sound is short-lived, giving way to a well-defined, traditional salsa.  At the third minute, the trumpets enter in correspondence with the percussion. At minute 3:45, the conga takes over the distant line, giving way to the trumpets and timbales, announcing that the song is elegantly descending in intensity.

El rumbero (Leo Pacheco Jr. y su orquesta)

This song wants to highlight the essence of African music within the salsa music made in Venezuela.  This arrangement seems to be inspired by the evolutionary inventions that today are a winning formula.  I am referring to the adjustments that Bobby Valentín made, at the request of maestro Willie Rosario.  The big difference is that this arrangement is somewhat louder than the ones that started this formula several decades ago.  The trombone and conga take over, anticipating “salsa, guaracha y bembé” as the song says.

Nací pa’ cantar (Wiwi Buznego y su orquesta)

The song is pure salsa, conga, pregones and lots of rhythm for the dancer who responds to a fluid arrangement without much distraction.  The first significant percussive cut that captures the dancer’s attention hits the senses at minute fifteen (1:15).  From then on, the performer plays between conga beats, trumpet blasts, pregones and soneos.  The mambo is unforgiving and if the dancer lets himself be carried away by the music, he can feel it to the last drop of blood running through his veins.

Camina y ven (Charanga Masters)

A Cuban song from the heart made in the best charanga format, taking into account that technology allows to improve the sound of the past.  The flute and violins play with the percussion in a daring way, modernizing what was the charanga in its original form.

Mi propuesta (Robert Burgos and Descarga Zason)

The closing track travels to Cuba in pure timba sound.  The singer harmonizes perfectly with the arrangement and the execution of the orchestra, his voice being the typical Cuban voice that stands out in timba format.  Very successful to close the trip of the compact disc with timba.  Very well achieved farewell.

Although the release of this CD was in 2019, for me it is new.  So I take the trouble to assure you that if you listen to it you will love it.  If you dance, you’ll wear out your sole.  And if you don’t, you’ll be encouraged to learn to move your skeleton to the rhythm of this tasty treat.

Larry Harlow ¨El Judío Maravilloso¨ Salsa Legend

He is a traditional and important figure in Latin music.

Pianist, Multi-Instrumentalist, Arranger, Composer, Producer and Musical Director Lawrence Ira Khan “Larry Harlow el Judío Maravilloso” was born on March 20, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

He traveled to Cuba in the ’50s, at which time he established his residence and began to study Afro-Cuban music. After gaining experience, he returned to New York to develop his own style and created his group “The Harlow Orchestra”.

Later, he participated in “The Fania All Stars”. During his years with Fania, Harlow recorded 35 albums as the leader of his own orchestra and another 20 as a member of Fania.

Harlow ha participado activamente en giras internacionales y en las principales ciudades de Estados Unidos. Actualmente, además de tocar con su banda, Harlow graba y dirige videos para artistas líderes en Estados Unidos y Europa.

Harlow stays active on international tours as well as in the main cities of the United States. In the present day, in addition to playing with his band, Harlow records and directs videos for standout artists from the United States and Europe.

Heavy Smokin’ (1966)

Heavy Smokin (1966)

In 1964, future salsa impresario Jerry Masucci went to the Chez José club to go dancing with his girlfriend in Manhattan. Impressed with the orchestra playing, Masucci approached its leader, a young pianist of Jewish origin named Larry Harlow, and offered him a record contract. Harlow would be the first artist signed by the newly-opened label of Fania Records. Recorded with Cuban singer Felo Brito, this first LP includes “La juventud”, as well as “Chez José”, which was a tribute to the club where it all started.

Presenta a Ismael Miranda (1969)

Aunque sus personalidades son completamente distintas, Harlow y Miranda graban una serie de LP explosivos con ritmos afrocubanos. Esta es su segunda colaboración y presenta algunas canciones de boogaloo, que estaba de moda en el momento. El bajista es Bobby Valentin, quien aporta tres temas, entre ellos el swing letal de "La Contraria".

In the late 1960s, Harlow found the singer who would bring his group to the aristocracy of salsa: a young Puerto Rican boy named Ismael Miranda. Although their personalities are completely different, Harlow and Miranda record a series of explosive LPs with Afro-Cuban rhythms. This is their second collaboration and features some boogaloo songs, which was the fashion of the moment. The bassist is Bobby Valentin, who contributes three songs, including the lethal swing of “La Contraria”.

Abran Paso! (1971)

Su sonido de trombón y trompeta alcanza un paroxismo de sabor en Abran paso !, anclado en tan maravillosas composiciones de Ismael Miranda como "Abandonada fue", "Donde llevas el son" y "Dolor y amor". El cantante aporta su sensibilidad puertorriqueña, mientras que las orquestaciones de Harlow se nutren de la tradición del son cubano. Una combinación de electrizante éxito artístico y comercial.
Abran paso! (1971)

While collaborating with the legendary Fania All Stars as a keyboard player, Harlow feverishly records, taking advantage of the explosion of salsa as a cultural phenomenon. His trombone and trumpet sound reaches a paroxysm of flavor on Abran paso!, anchored in such wonderful compositions made by Ismael Miranda as “Abandonada fue”, “Donde llevas el son” and “Dolor y amor”. The singer brings his Puerto Rican sensibility, while the orchestrations of Harlow are nurtured in the tradition of Cuban son. An combination of electrifying artistic and commercial success.

Homenaje a Arsenio Rodríguez (1971)

Junto a Miranda, compuso la canción "Arsenio", una salsa fuerte con sabor cubano y un clima de melancolía desgarradora. El resto del LP, que fue grabado en una sesión de ocho horas, está dedicado al repertorio de Rodríguez, con versiones extraordinarias de "Tumba y bongo", "No me llores" y "El terror", entre otros. Indispensable.
Tribute to  Arsenio Rodríguez (1971)

When Arsenio Rodriguez (musical genius, blind, and pioneer of Cuban son passed away in Los Angeles in December 1970) Harlow quickly decided to record an LP dedicated to his work. Along with Miranda, he wrote the song “Arsenio”, a strong salsa with Cuban flavour and a climate of heartbreaking melancholy. The rest of the LP, which was recorded in an eight-hour session, is dedicated to Rodríguez’s repertoire, with extraordinary versions of “Tumba y bongo”, “No me llores” and “El terror”, among others. Indispensable.

Hommy A Latin Opera (1973)

Inspirado en la ópera rock Tommy del grupo inglés The Who, grabó Hommy, con la participación de Cheo Feliciano y Pete "El Conde" Rodríguez, entre otros. Harlow le pidió a Celia Cruz, que estaba desatendida por la industria de la música en ese momento, que cantara "Gracia Divina", que resucitó su carrera.

In the early 70s, Ismael Miranda decided to leave the orchestra of Harlow and pursue a solo career, which would cause animosity between them for a long time. Harlow began developing ambitious projects. Inspired by the rock opera Tommy by the English group The Who, he recorded Hommy, with the participation of Cheo Feliciano and Pete “El Conde” Rodríguez, among others. Salsa (1974)

Bajo el sencillo título Salsa, rinde homenaje a las raíces cubanas de la música tropical, combinando el sonido del trombón y la trompeta con dos violines que evocan la estética charanga de grupos como la Orquesta Aragón. Con "La cartera", una versión de una canción de Arsenio Rodríguez, Harlow logró su mayor éxito. Harlow recorded one of his most significant albums in just two days. Under the simple title Salsa, it paid tribute to the Cuban roots of tropical music, combining the trombone and trumpet sound with two violins that evoke the aesthetics charanga made by groups like Orquesta Aragón. With “La cartera”, a cover version of a song by Arsenio Rodriguez, Harlow achieved his biggest hit. Thanks to singers Adalberto Santiago and Junior González, the nickname “El Judío Maravilloso” came about.

El Judío Maravilloso (1975)

Este LP del año 1975 sigue explotando un sonido épico con marcada influencia cubana. El tema de apertura, "El dolorcito de mi china", de Arsenio Rodríguez, tiene una duración de 10 minutos e incluye un solo de piano lleno de virtuosismo y expresividad. El auge de la carrera del tecladista no mostró signos de desvanecimiento, como lo demuestran sus versiones de "Buenavista guaguancó" y "El negrito ñéngere", así como el instrumental psicodélico "Latin Roots", compuesto por el propio Harlow.
El judío Maravilloso (1975)

Harlow continued to record prodigious albums, now with Junior Gonzalez as lead vocalist. This LP of the year 1975 continues to exploit an epic sound with a amarked Cuban influence. The opening track, “El dolorcito de mi china”, by Arsenio Rodriguez, lasts 10 minutes and includes a piano solo full of virtuosity and expressiveness. The peak of keyboard player’s carrer showed no signs of fading, as demonstrated by his versions of “Buenavista guaguancó” and “El negrito ñéngere”, as well as the psychedelic instrumental “Latin Roots”, composed by Harlow himself.

La Raza Latina (1977)

Harlow participó de esta tendencia con un musical, A Salsa Suite, que describe la evolución del género tropical desde África hasta el Caribe, pasando por Nueva York de los años 50 y 60 y culminando con una canción dedicada al futuro. At the end of the 70s, salsa is fertile ground for grandiloquent experiments of a symphonic character. Harlow participated in this trend with a musical, A Salsa Suite, which describes the evolution of the tropical genre from Africa to the Caribbean, passing through New York of the 50s and 60s and culminating in a song dedicated to the future. Harlow hired Rubén Blades to be his vocalist, although this is not his prime. A failed and brief album, but fascinating in its conceptual ambition.

Larry Harlow presents Latin Fever (1978)

A fines de la década de 1990, cuando el interés por la salsa clásica había ido en aumento, formó la banda Latin Legends con el conguero Ray Barretto y el cantante Adalberto Santiago. Harlow always showed the eclectic trends of a cosmopolitan musician. In 1970, for example, he recorded a rock record in the style of Chicago band with the group Ambergris. In 1978, he produced this fascinating LP by Latin Fever, a group consisting of 14 female singers and instrumentalists. These include percussionist Susan Hadjopoulos, who would become famous with English Joe Jackson, and the singer Ada Chabrier, who also collaborated with Ray Barretto and Willie Colón. A rarity that is worth discovering.

Larry Harlow’s Latin Legends Band (1998)

Harlow continued to record high-quality LPs in the 1980s. In the late 1990s, when the interest in classic salsa had been increasing, he formed the band Latin Legends with conguero Ray Barretto and singer Adalberto Santiago. This first album includes the participation of Pete “El Conde” Rodríguez (a few years before his death) and Ismael Miranda. The sound is warm and organic, emphasizing the musical knowledge of these veterans. According to Harlow, it was his favorite band to play live.

The Jewish Salsa Pianist, Innovative and Irreverent

This day 20 / 8 /2021 and after 32 days hospitalized “El Judío Maravilloso” Larry dies in New York at 12:30 a.m. from complications as a kidney patient that weakened his already weary heart.
