Israel “Cachao” López, a Cuban musician and composer, has been hailed as “the Inventor of Mambo”

Born in Havana on September 14, 1918, and passing away in Coral Gables, Miami, on March 22, 2008, Israel “Cachao” López, often known simply as “Cachao,” was a Cuban musician and composer.

He became a legend in Cuban music with his masterful handling of the double bass and was renowned for his performances in mambo and Latin jazz.

His talent earned him two Grammy Awards (in 1995 and 2005), a Latin Grammy in 2003, an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

He has been described as “the inventor of mambo” and is considered a master of descarga (live improvisations).

He began by playing various instruments until he settled on the double bass, which allowed him, as a teenager, to join the Havana Philharmonic Orchestra, where his father and older brother also played.

“Cachao” left Cuba in 1962 with a long list of successes and stated in a 2007 interview that if it weren’t for his compatriot and colleague Dámaso Pérez Prado, “mambo would not have been heard worldwide.”

His first stop was Madrid, where he stayed for a year before emigrating to the United States. In the U.S., he resided in New York City, Las Vegas, and Miami.

López also played acoustic bass with his brother, the multi-instrumentalist Orestes López. They literally composed over 3,000 songs together and were highly influential in Cuban music from the 1930s to the 1950s.

They created the “nuevo ritmo” (new rhythm) in the late 1930s, which transformed the danzón by introducing African rhythms into Cuban music, ultimately leading to mambo.

He won several Grammy Awards for both his own work and his contributions to albums by Latin music stars, including Gloria Estefan. In 1995, he won a Grammy for Master Sessions Volume 1.

In 2003, he won a Latin Grammy for Best Traditional Tropical Latin Album alongside Bebo Valdés and Patato for El Arte Del Sabor. He won another Grammy in 2005 for his work ¡Ahora Sí!

His nephew, Orlando “Cachaíto” López, became one of the pillars of the famous Buena Vista Social Club.

Cachao performed with artists such as Tito Puente, and his music has been featured in films like The Birdcage and the soundtrack of the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

The Actor Andy Garcia produced a documentary titled Cachao… “Como Su Ritmo No Hay Dos” in 1993 about his music. He also shared stages with Celia Cruz and her husband Pedro Knight, as well as with trombonist Generoso Jiménez.

His last musical collaboration was with Gloria and Emilio Estefan on the singer’s album titled 90 Millas.

López passed away on the morning of March 22, 2008, in Coral Gables, Florida, at the age of 89, due to complications following kidney failure.

Michell Castillo, manager, expresses to us, “…the concept of Mambo Café is aimed at a Latin public, salsero, who wants to enjoy a good bar.” Concept that day after day continues to be rooted in the visiting public. “… the name arose from the need for something multicolored for a salsa bar, the conditions of the premises allowed the designer to play with colors and structures that will speak for themselves.” It is striking to see a column decorated with acetate discs, murals and paintings in the best Caribbean style.

We had the experience of collecting impressions from many of the city’s dancers, all express the good atmosphere that is lived in this beautiful place, these institutions have had their doors open to celebrate their anniversaries, special parties, closing of the year and other festive occasions. thanks to the great opportunities that the bar offers us.

The legacy of El Palladium lives on, as demonstrated by ‘Mambo Fantasy’

The legacy On Saturday, January 18, 2025, the Tropicoro Club at the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel in Puerto Rico was decked out to celebrate the music of Tito Rodríguez; led by his heir, Tito Rodriguez Jr., and El Caballero de la Salsa: Gilbertito Santa Rosa on vocals and the characteristic marquee of “El Inolvidable”. The show was part of ‘Mambo Fantasy’, a duel between the legacy of Tito Puente and that of Tito Rodríguez, two of the Kings of mambo during the golden age of big bands.

The dance concert featured the musical power of the big orchestras, responsible for placing Latin music among the favorites of the dancing public. It was a must remember that the history of what was the era of mambo was strengthened in the emblematic New York halls, among which “El Palladium” stood out. To do so, the dance corps of Tito Ortos and Tamara Livolsi was accompanied by the nonagenarian Mambo Mike, engaging in an energetic choreography that the trio executed to perfection.

The legacy of Tito Puente resonated under the musical direction of the trumpeter, arranger, composer and producer Humberto Ramírez, with Hermán Olivera and Michelle Brava as the singers in charge of interpreting Puente’s repertoire.

Rodríguez’s legacy was carried out by the union between the timbalero, arranger, composer, producer and orchestra director, heir to the musicality and the name of one of our greatest musical glories -Tito Rodríguez, Jr.- and one of the greatest stars of contemporary music -Gilberto Santa Rosa. The group was composed of: Gerardo Rivas on the tumbadoras, Pete Perignon on the bongos, Mako Pérez and Genaro “Ginno” Ramírez on the chorus, Luis Marín on the piano, Johnny Torres on the bass; Freddie Miranda, Josué Urbina, Saviel Cartagena and Francisco “Pacman” Cruz on the saxophones; Georgie Torres and Anthony “Nony” Rosado on the trombones; with Rolando Alejandro, Pedro Marcano, Kevin Ibáñez and Becky Zambrana on the trumpets. And since legacies are significant, it should not be overlooked that the three percussionists of this group are children of musicians.

The repertoire, which included “Mama Güela,” “A los Muchachos de Belén,” “Vuela la paloma,” the bolero “Me faltabas tú,” “Baranga,” “Bon sueno,” “Yambú,” “Avísale a mi contrario,” “El agua de Belén,” “Óyeme Antonia,” “Estoy como nunca,” and the surprising intervention of the tumbador singer Johnny Rivero, the bolero “Tómame ya,” “El que se fue,” and “Abarriba cumbiaremos,” made it clear that the musical complexity of the golden age of mambo remains alive. The Gentleman of Salsa gave a lecture on his expertise in the most Tito Rodríguez-like dance that has ever been seen and heard, imprinting his interpretive style on the songs of “El Inolvidable,” while demonstrating his mastery of the dance, sliding across the stage using Rodríguez’s best steps.

Evidently, the participation of El Caballero de la Salsa was inspired by the musical perfection of “El Inolvidable”, achieving an impeccable performance. Through the magic that Santa Rosa brought to the concert, Tito Rodríguez, Jr. managed to connect with the Puerto Rican public that follows his father’s music. For our part, we are grateful for the invitation of the work team responsible for the success of ‘Mambo Fantasy’, while we remain awaiting the next show that manages to bring together these greats of mambo.

Latin jazz and mambo trumpeter Jonathan Powell and his great collaborations

Trumpeter Jonathan Powell is one of the many examples that show how much so many American artists have looked at Latin music over the last few years, so this is a great opportunity to know one of the many stories about what our heritage has achieved in this country.

Instruments that caught Jonathan’s attention

An important fact to remember is that Jonathan’s parents were musicians. His father played the electric bass and his mother played the cello, so he obviously has a lot of talent to get from. However, his interest in music turned to a slightly different way.

The instrument through which the artist is best known today is the trumpet due to his great skill at handling it, but it is not the only instrument he has learned to play. He also plays the trombone, the tuba and other bass instruments, but does not have the same fascination with them as with the trumpet.

His interest in music began when he was in high school and became part of a few student bands, resulting in more than 30 years of musical career.

Jonathan’s academic training

Most of what Jonathan has got to learn comes from the experience he has gained through his work, although he does not devalue formal music education. In fact, he attended the North Carolina School of the Arts and studied with that institution’s best teachers in the area of classical music.

When he turned 19, he made the decision to move to New York, where he has lived ever since. While there, he did not care as much about further studying music, but gaining as much experience as he could through practice.

Interest in Latin music

Although Jonathan’s interest in music began with the classical genre, his move to Florida made him seek other horizons. In Florida, he and his brother Jeremy began to make contact with radio stations that played Latin genres and this led them to meet the Garcia-Herreros brothers, Juan and Victor, who are two very experienced musicians in Latin jazz, but also in Latin music in general. The boys returned to Florida after studying at Berklee College of Music and started a band with Jonathan and Jeremy until they had to move to New York.

When Jonathan graduated from high school and also moved to New York, he was reunited with Juan and Victor who offered him to join their orchestra La Creación, with which he played every weekend for several years. This would be what the young musician would describe as his first real experience in the world of music, leading him to participate in the orchestra La Excelencia and to play with Arturo O’Farrill and Eddie Palmieri. 

Learning from other great artists

Just as Jonathan has played with O’Farrill and Palmieri, he has also been able to share the stage with Miguel Zenón, Tito Puente Jr, Oscar Hernández from the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Israel Tanenbaum and many others.

Despite not having received much academic training, the opportunity to have played with the aforementioned music stars and many more really taught him many things that he would not have learnt in any educational institution. He assures that from whom he learned the most was Maestro Palmieri, since the legendary pianist is very generous when it comes to sharing his knowledge with whoever needs it, thanks to his extensive experience in this rich world.

‘‘Palmieri has been around since the fifties and sixties and has played with the most important artists of his generation, so he has a lot to teach. People have no idea how much he knows and how deep his knowledge on music is,” said the trumpeter about one of his great living inspirations.

However, as a trumpet player, another of his great inspirations was Puerto Rican arranger, composer and producer Juancito Torres for the way he played, since he considers it very special and unique compared to many other musicians.

Nu Shanga

Eager to manage his own musical group, Jonathan gives the public a very interesting proposal which he baptized Nu Sangha, inspired by Tibetan language, since these two words together mean ”new community”. With this group, he had much more freedom when choosing how he wanted to address each rhythm and wanted to give a much more modern approach to the type of jazz he had been playing through electronic elements few times used before.

In the case of Nu Sangha, he enjoyed everything he did professionally and was able to experiment with everything he had learned so far in creative ways, leading him to release the albums ”Transcend” and ”Beacons of Light”.

Mambo Jazz Party

In Jonathan’s own words, Mambo Jazz Party, the artist’s most recent musical work, the entire process of recording it took more than 10 years, since that was the time taken to create all the music that appears in the record material. He started the creation in 2014 and it was not until 2022 that Jonathan added the final details such as some missing vocals, but he assures that all the time spent on the album was worth it.

On the album, we can find Jimmy Bosch, guitarist Nir Felder, flutist Itai Kriss, pianist Manuel Valera, vocalist Ariadne Trujillo, singer Anthony Almonte and many other great artists who embellish this creation.

In other interviews, Jonathan has described this album as a mix of traditional salsa and Latin jazz elements, electronic sounds and a lot of spiritualism, which can summarize very well what this musical work represents for Jonathan Powell.

Omar Ledezma Jr. and Pacific Mambo on tour in Europe

We had several occasions to talk with Venezuelan singer and percussionist Omar Ledezma Jr. because he always has interesting things to say about his projects and tours, and this time it was no exception.   

Recently, the artist along with the rest of Pacific Mambo Orchestra were doing a small tour in Europe, more specifically in France and Italy, and we wanted to know all he could tell us about these performances, most notably the great musical event Tempo Latino, which is held every year in Vic-Fezensac, France.

Pacific Mambo in Italy   

Something interesting about this year is that Pacific Mambo not only went to Tempo Latino, but they also had a few shows in Italy prior to the festival. Before that, they played in one of the most important events of jazz and music in general which was the Umbria Jazz Festival that took place in Peruvia, where they had the opportunity to play after the impeccable performance by Brazilian singer and guitarist Djavan.    

He also describes this concert as a great experience and a great opportunity to continue to demonstrate their talent to audiences that had never heard them before, so they enjoyed it and took full advantage of it.   

Later, they had another performance in the city of Palermo, where they were accompanied by the Palermo Brass Orchestra. Omar says that this combination was spectacular and that the music sounded incredible with the brass in the background, to the extent that they spoke to the group and several of the musicians accompanied them to France to play with them at Tempo Latino as well.  

Pacific Mambo at Tempo Latino one more year   

Omar explained to us that he does not handle the details of the contact to Pacific Mambo to attend Tempo Latino again, but he did tell us that the singer of the group, Cristel Durandi, was the godmother of the festival, which was a real honor for all its members and they were very gratefulfor that. It can now be said that there is an important connection between the orchestra and the organization of the event for future editions.   

He told us that there is nothing particularly different than previous years and that, in his case, he felt he was treated like family by the organizers and the other musicians with whom they had the opportunity to talk to. The ones with whom they shared the most were Latin jazz trumpeter Maite Hontelé and the guys from La Orquesta La 33, who had their own performances on that stage that has seen so many Latin talents shine over the years.

On Saturday 27 July, it was finally their turn after Maite played with her new orchestra of young musicians, which was preparing the audience for them when they had to delight the audience with the best of their repertoire.   

We are always happy to be able to bring our music to the people of France and the world  in general because, as always, there were people from all over the world who traveled just to attend the festival. It was very nice to be able to play there again and soak up so much energy. Whenever we go, we always feel at home” said Omar about Tempo Latino.   

General details of the tour 

Omar’s tour with Pacific Mambo was conducted entirely in Italy and France. As mentioned previously, the guys had never played in Italy before, so this was something very special for them, since the people they met had excellent receptivity to their music and the organization of these concerts offered them all the support they needed in the technical, administrative and hotel part.    

The first place they visited was the city of Peruvia, Italy, where they participated in the Umbria Jazz Festival. From there, they moved to Palermo, Sicily, where they had their second performance, and finally, they flew to France for Tempo Latino.   

Regarding the accommodation in France, the artist told us that he and his orchestra fellows stayed in a hotel in the town of Auch, a place they had never been to before and which was about 25 to 30 minutes by bus from Vic-Fezensac. Omar highlighted the spectacular view they enjoyed on their journey and all the fields of vineyards and crops they had the opportunity to observe.

Upcoming performances 

As for the next Tempo Latino edition, it is still too early to know if Pacific Mambo will participate again in the festival, so those conversations with the group to go to France next year remain to be seen.   

However, the musician could confirm that they will have a local performance in September. He also informed us that they will have a concert at Yoshi`s the first weekend of next year, which is already a tradition for the band every year.  

For the time being, the band will use these months to refresh their repertoire, create new music and prepare for what is to come in 2025.
