Carlos David Suarez, Professional dancer, choreographer, instructor and musician

Art has been in his veins since he was born, and Carlos David Suarez has cultivated his artistic gift, going far and traveling the world teaching and learning

He was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and grew up in the west of the city in the 23 de Enero, a well-known area to give birth and raise artists, athletes and talented people.

Carlos knew from a very young age that he wanted to be a musician (timbalero) … At 7 or 8 years old, his parents took him to the house of one of the best percussionists in Venezuela and from that moment he began his career in the art world.

Later, his mother could not take him to music classes anymore and unfortunately had to leave them aside, and continue with his primary studies. Although in one way or another, he was always connected with the stage and the dance. At school, he was part of plays, acts, traditional dances and everything related to the arts.

Years later, he started playing soccer, and soon realized that he was in love with the sport, and began training hard to thrive within teams.

One of his main strengths is discipline, so he applied it to both: art and sport. He came to play on good teams and was seen himself playing professionally outside of his native country.

“Yes, I always saw myself outside Venezuela, not because of any specific situation, but because as a child I saw myself traveling the world with music, art, or sports.”

Years later, when he was 14, his older brother took him to Imagenes Latinas, an incredible artistic dance school where he trained, and the only one he attended for at least 8 years. There he studied ballet, contemporary dance, jazz, hip hop, funky, Latin genres and above all; Salsa.

“I had great teachers who gave me the opportunity, seeing that desire to be a better artist every day, especially Arelis Guevara, owner and choreographer of the company”

After many efforts, sacrifices, study and, above all, hours after hours of rehearsals, Carlos become the first dancer of the professional company for three consecutive years. He traveled with the company to many national and international events, conferences and TV shows … South America, USA, Europe and Asia.

After his stay in the company, he decided to take other roads, take his own path and do new things. It was part of a ballet where he made musicals and all kinds of varied shows. He learned a lot about other disciplines such as tap, flamenco, nationalist dance, tango; and even a little acting.

He was in the ranks of this ballet for two years and then took his path as a soloist. For the first time, he had the opportunity to travel outside his country; to Miami.

“I was working on famous nightclub shows; then I went to Los Angeles to work with another dance company that I was in for a short time and then I went to Panama. ”

He worked for a short time in Panama; he returned for a short time to Venezuela, and moved to Casablanca, Morocco, where he worked in Salsa and Bachata shows. After two years, and to continue evolving in his artistic career, he decided to go to Europe. He arrived to the city of Amsterdam, Holland, where he was doing shows and workshops at congresses as a soloist.

Soon, he moved to Germany to pursue his dance training … He lived in Germany for two years, worked at various dance schools, and began to expand his horizons, making himself known at Salsa conferences throughout Germany, Europe and Africa. Then after another job offer, and pursuing more dreams and learning, he moved to Milano, Italy, where he lived for a couple of years and the opportunities to go to conferences and festivals were multiplying, giving classes and workshops in Europe, Africa and the United States.

At the time of this interview, Carlos is based in the United States completing art projects with other companies.

“I have had the joy of playing as a musician, and working with excellent companies, dancers, famous awards and great artists such as Juan Luis Guerra, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Pitbull, Chino & Nacho, El Gran Combo de PR, Los Adolescentes, among others. .. ”

Carlos Suárez continues to study, train and learn more and more from this career, which in his opinion is infinite to learn. He continues to work as an instructor, choreographer and dancer, doing shows at many festivals, giving his best at every step, respecting his work, image, integrity and ethics.

Get to know Carlos David Suarez more closely

International Salsa Magazine (ISM): Define in 5 lines, who is Carlos Suarez?

Carlos Suarez (CS):

A person who respects everyone, considering that we are equal, and each one has a different knowledge, talent and strength. A person who aspired, fought and achieved his dream of being an artist, despite all the experiences. Lover to be able to help and teach everyone. Someone who always gives all the support and love to his family and friends. Very disciplined with himself and with his students.

ISM: What do you enjoy most about your profession?

CS: Being able to get to know many countries, cultures, new people, and above all, being able to inspire others to believe in a discipline such as art.

ISM On what platforms and upcoming events (face-to-face and virtual we will see you)?

CS: To see me on platforms or social media, you can go to my Instagram: @casu__ or my Facebook page: CaSu – Dance & Beats. On these two platforms I always leave all my videos of classes, shows, workshops, musicals, etc. Right now due to the pandemic I do not have specific information on where I will be presenting myself, but if you follow me on the social media, you will know just when I know it.

ISM: How do you see yourself in 5 years?

CS: Good question …

I still see myself exercising my career as an artist and dedicating myself much more to music, which is one of the things that I’m most passionate about, and I haven’t had the opportunity to dedicate myself 100%. I see myself as an even more trained person and with much more knowledge, I also see myself dedicating love to a family and above all … I see myself being happy without hurting anyone.

ISM: What is your advice for those young people who, like you, are fighting for their dreams in the dance world?

CS: My advice is to never let anyone make fun of your dreams, nor do you make fun of the dreams of others … I believed, I bet on myself, and I won … I am the artist I wanted to be and I still have a long way to go, but all this does not come alone … It is a process that costs a lot, studying, preparing, always staying mentally and physically fit, learning languages so that they can defend themselves in the world and, above all, be people who love and respect their work … Art.

Another of the great figures of the Spanish Salsa Harlem Orchestra is Luisito Quintero, the timbalero from Venezuela. Luisito Quintero was born in Caracas, Venezuela where he had his first contact with music. Cultural influences of Afro-Venezuelan rhythms were always present at home. His father, a highly respected percussionist, taught and encouraged Luisito to play the timpani in his teens.

Luisito Quintero
Luisito Quintero

Quintero continued to refine his playing level with the Venezuela Symphony Orchestra, where his technique for playing the timpani soon caught the attention of his colleagues. Subsequently, he joined the popular music groups Guaco and the Trabuco Venezolano and traveled with Oscar D ‘León with whom he achievedan important international projection. The live performances, recordings and projects in which he has participated are countless.

He has made his mark as a percussionist with figures such as Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Marc Anthony, Gloria Estefan, Richard Bona, Jack Dejonette, Willie Colón, George Benson, Natalie Cole, Herbie Hancock, Nuyorican Soul, Masters at Work, and of course, The Spanish Harlem Orchestra. Without a doubt, an impressive and worth mentioning career.

And if we are talking about incredible careers in this edition, I can’t stop talking about Adalberto Santiago and the new projects of the 60th anniversary with great artists of the genre. This his time I can tell you about Cuco Peña’s string arrangements, the participation of Nelson Jaimes and, of course, the help of my friend Freddy Miranda. At 83 years old, he is still in the rumba. There is less and less to show the world this historical piece for the world of salsa.

I also want to remember Raphy Leavitt, on the fifth anniversary of her death on August 5. In 1970 Leavitt organized an orchestra that should have a different sound and style. He wanted to select the repertoire of songs of the orchestra with a particular, positive, social and even philosophical message; and founded “La Selecta”. Since its inception, La Selecta has featured Coamo-born Sammy Marrero as one of its singers.

Marrero, who has always been strongly influenced by the music of the Puerto Rican jíbaro, had an opportunity to teach his dramatic singing style in his first hits as the almost hymn “Jíbaro Soy”, a very patriotic and unusual Puerto Rican song, “Payaso”, and “The Good Shepherd”. However, it is in the band’s signature song, “La Cuna Blanca,” that Marrero’s voice is for the most part associated.

Raphy Leavitt
Raphy Leavitt

In 1978, Leavitt discovered a young singer named Tony Vega, who became a legend among salsa singers on his own merit. Raphy Leavitt and La Selecta were responsible for the introduction of salsa in many countries. In the 1980s, Leavitt became an independent producer and produced two albums for Bobby Valentine.

In the 1990s, he established his record recording company, R.L. Records. The company’s first production was the album titled “Provocame,” which became a hit in Puerto Rico, the United States, and South America.

In 1978, Leavitt discovered a young singer named Tony Vega, who became a legend among salsa singers on his own merit. Raphy Leavitt and La Selecta were responsible for the introduction of salsa in many countries. Raphy passed away in Miami as a result of an operation of the hip prosthesis that had been installed due to an accident in 1972, and that he had become infected. Leavitt passed away in his sleep. Raphy will always be endorsers of the Salsa Museum with the clown suit of its 25th anniversary.

I also want to thank the constant and significant support for the Museum, from my friend Sully Díaz, who as endorser of the museum, is always working to promote and make our work reach more people. Sully was born in New York, the daughter of Sephardic parents from Puerto Rico. She began her career as a model, and at the age of 17 she began acting in Spanish soap operas, making herself a well-known figure on television in Puerto Rico.

In 1983 she became popular throughout Latin America with the role of Coralito, in the telenovela of the same name. From that moment on, Sully was known as “the queen of Puerto Rican soap operas.” In the early 1990s, Sully moved to Hollywood and appeared on various television shows as a guest star and worked on a few movies.

In the mid-1990s, Sully joined four other Latina women (Dyana Ortelli, Marilyn, Ludo Vika, and Lydia Nicole) in a comedy group called “The Hot & Spicey Mamitas”. They sold out at several Los Angeles comedy clubs. They recorded a CD live called simply The Hot & Spicey Mamitas.

In 2002 Sully appeared in the play La Lupe: My Life, My Destiny, in which she played the Cuban singer La Lupe. Shortly after the execution of this work, Sully made her own production of La Reina, La Lupe. This work toured all of Puerto Rico and was a great success in Florida. That same year, she starred in the Puerto Rican thriller “Cuéntame tu pena”, in which she plays Isadora, a radio host who receives a call from a woman who is killed while on the air.

In 2004 Sully toured with Gilberto Santa Rosa in a play called “The True Story of Pedro Navaja.” In 2009 Sully appeared in the movie Princess Protection Program as Reina Sofía, along with Selena Gómez and Demi Lovato.

Recently, Papo Rosario released his new single “Gracias” produced by arranger and musician Isidro Infante. Rosario appreciates being alive and being able to walk after being bedridden as a result of a car accident. Papo Rosario is a world-class artist who has put the name of Puerto Rico on high. Rosario, who retired in 2019 from the group considered the “University of Salsa”, El Gran combo de Puerto Rico, after having an accident and presenting health problems, affirms that he already feels ready to resume his musical career with the Launch of his first solo production by producer Isidro Infante. I wish you success in this new beginning.

Franky Swing: From Venezuela Triumphed in Latin America

Franky Swing was born in Caracas-Venezuela, on December 3, from a humble family, as the main musical reference we will find his older brother, from a very young age his interest in singing was noted, he sang whenever he could, his father encouraged him to do it in family gatherings performing very naturally. During his childhood he belonged to the choir and the marching band at his school, his singing teacher saw great potential in him and advised him to dedicate himself to music.

Franky Swing
Franky Swing

Franky grew up, and could not devote himself to singing academically, because, to support his family, he worked at a nightclub where he only had one day off a week.

One day he had the opportunity to sing in another nightclub, where his brother worked, and it was there that he discovered that what really moved his life was music.

The night witnessed his first musical experiences, and thus, between clubs, events and private parties he was making himself known musically among friends, neighbors and clients; without losing sight of his desires: to soon realize an important musical project.

In 2007, he began as a soloist, a great professional experience that did not transcend beyond personal enrichment, then he became the vocalist of the LYRI-K group with which he was able to make himself known with more projection at a national and international level, and thus embarking on that artistic path that he longed for so much.

Songs such as “GUARAPO Y MELAO”, “LATINOS” and “REGRESA A MI” sounded throughout the national territory, the latter achieving position No. 8 in the record report on the country’s radio stations. LYRI-K was a good professional experience that Franky Swing had, because with it he not only gained great national exposure, but also managed to cross borders showing his talent in countries like Ecuador.

Additionally, with LYRI-K he participated in national events of great impact such as the Solid Fest (2011) and social concerts, being the image of the SENOSALUD FOUNDATION.

Meet Richard “Saoco” Rodríguez

Latin America / Venezuela / Caracas

Venezuelan Richard “Saoco” Rodríguez

There is a great variety of countries in Latin America that are incredible, but none as varied, dynamic and beautiful as Venezuela, a country that is known for having beautiful and varied landscapes, a great variety of climates and fauna, and Venezuelans are very pleasant, respectful and mostly partygoers. On this occasion we have the pleasure of meeting the young salsa singer, Richard “Saoco” Rodríguez who sees the light in the city of Guarenas, the neighboring town of the great city of Caracas, Venezuela.

Since he was very young, he has stood out as a vocalist in local salsa genre groups, he was driven by recommendations from family and friends, he decided to compose his own songs and make contact with two great and renowned musical arrangers such as José “Tuky” Torres and Héctor “Chispa Hurtado, the latter is the one who takes the reins as music producer and arranger of his orchestra.

Richard “Saoco” Rodríguez has the ability to compose songs in a very contagious way, he takes up the essence of Son, Mambo and Guaguancó.

He has received 4 important awards from the Music Industry such as the Popular Vote of the Singing Festival at the Teatro Principal in 2016, the Compas de Oro Award for International Salsa in 2017, Salsa Revelation Figure of the Year in 2017, Yara Awards The Best Salsa Singer with International Projection in 2018.

Today he presents a musical proposal with the launch of his new song titled “Soon you will return”, where he incorporates the Harp which is an emblematic instrument of Venezuela that resounds in the musical sound that maestro Héctor “Chispa” Hurtado gives it.

Consequently, Richard gets emotional when he tells us about this song, telling us that it all started one day watching the planes leave the Simón Bolívar Airport.

“I went to accompany a great friend who was going to Argentina and on the way home I thought about how hard it is to leave our land, leave our loved ones to undertake new challenges in another country. When I got home, the muse and nation came up with this beautiful song “Soon You Will Be Back” where I remind my Venezuelan brothers of our customs, the importance of sharing with the family, reminding them that we are a happy, pachanguero country.”
