Oscar D’ León. Confessions by Oswaldo Ponte by William Briceño Part II

“Continuing the musical biography of Oscar D’ León. He moved on to new horizons, new learnings, difficult experiences, and decisions, as life always holds a wide variety of surprises over time. One of those changes was his breakup with Dimensión Latina due to various internal group problems.

Oscar’s departure caused issues for the group, as several of their scheduled performances in other countries were canceled, and over time, they lost audience, leading most of their members to split up and leave. Nevertheless, the group managed to carry on successfully but without the unique touch or ‘sazón’ that Oscar D’ León provided.

After leaving Dimensión Latina, Oscar ingeniously created La Salsa Mayor in 1976 and was able to release his first discography with his new group, thanks to the record label TH, which provided it because they were very interested in his new project, naming it ‘Con bajo y to’.’ From that moment, Oscar knew that he could consolidate himself with this group or any other, as his exceptional and unparalleled talents, so much originality, had never been witnessed”

“In any generation of Venezuelan artists. He also created another group called ‘La Crítica’ with the purpose that if any member of the Salsa Mayor Group was absent, one of them would substitute. However, the orchestra ‘La Salsa Mayor’ lasted only 4 years due to a strong disagreement Oscar had with his band on stage because the songs played during those two performances ‘were not accepted,’ leading to the closure of ‘Salsa Mayor.’ From that moment, he began to practice with his orchestra ‘La Crítica’ before his performances in Curaçao, where his songs, ‘Suavecito,’ ‘No ha pasado nada,’ served as a way to allude that everything had been overcome.”

“With this group, he achieved significant success. From that era, Oscar D’ León was known as the leading artistic figure in the country and on the American continent, with his music being heard in various homes in Venezuela and other Latin American countries. During that time, he traveled throughout the Latin American continent, the Caribbean islands, and the United States. From that moment, he leveraged his figure as he ventured into artistic promotion. He did so with Daniel Santos, Héctor Lavoe, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, and Celia Cruz.

If we have to mention which country Oscar liked or idolized the most, it was Cuba, because ever since he was very young, he loved the music played there, which over the years underwent various transformations in different stages, such as ‘La inmortal guaracha Celia Cruz’ which brought glory to the island; ‘la sonora Matancera’ carried the name of Martí’s land around the world; ‘Dámaso Pérez Prado,’ among other artists who contributed to the origin of Cuban music.”

“When Oscar D’ León first visited Cuba, it was an unforgettable experience and held extraordinary significance not only for the young artist but for the country itself. Its magnitude was such that, first and foremost, the ministers of culture and foreign affairs welcomed him, and every time he performed, large numbers of fans awaited to see and hear him. The respect and admiration for him were immense. In fact, this book mentions that ‘Cuban music,’ among other things, made Oscar D’ León’s existence as an artistic figure and as a person possible.”

“For Cubans, Oscar D’ León’s arrival had a profound effect; it was the rebirth of existing music. In short, he rescued it, causing Cuban music, ‘son,’ the central show, and entertainment venues to become their activities for relaxation and fun.

Oswaldo Ponte, in his research, mentions that when he looked for everything related to Oscar D’ León, there was immense admiration for him. Everyone he interviewed, even if they knew he was his manager and his biographer accompanied him, always said incredible things about Oscar. He not only rescued Cuban ‘son’ but also taught them to dance Cuban music, opening the minds and perspectives of Cubans, as Cuban ‘son’ continued to be known internationally. Everyone mentions what a good musician he is, that they can’t believe he isn’t Cuban and has that ‘sazón’ (flavor/charisma).

He was famous not only in Cuba but also in other countries. An example of this was Oscar’s participation in the Rome Festival when he sang a song by Adalberto. Mr. Adalberto Álvarez passed backstage and commented: ‘Cuba will never be able to repay Oscar for what he has done for Cuban music. He has kept it alive; if it hadn’t been for him, for Johnny Pacheco, for Celia Cruz, for La Sonora Ponceña and others who took it upon themselves to keep ‘son’ alive outside our country’… ‘and of all of them, the fundamental leader was Oscar D’ León because he is the most connected to authentic Cuban musical roots.'”

“In short, every time Oscar goes out to sing and dance, he is representing Cubans. For Cubans, dancing is almost a ritual. In 1950, they danced ‘son,’ ‘danzón,’ ‘mambo,’ ‘chachachá,’ ‘rumba,’ and other dances, some of which lasted a very short time, such as ‘dengue,’ ‘monzambique,’ ‘pilón,’ ‘carioca’; and others transcended time, like ‘conga’ and ‘rumba.’ Salsa is the continuation of, or the same as, ‘son,’ which can be danced with the same style or with different styles.

Oswaldo Ponte began his promoter plan by hiring figures, among whom was Oscar D’ León. Becoming a serious entertainment promoter, he took the risk of doing it internationally (outside Venezuela) where he bought a contract from Guillermo Arena to present Celia Cruz with La Sonora Matancera. He also partnered with Juan Caravallo and managed to present the biggest show in Higuerote, Venezuela; with this great step, he was becoming a potential successful entrepreneur in international shows.”

“In 1983, he hired Oscar for 3 performances with ‘Roberto Blades,’ two at the Ávila Hotel and one at San Jacinto Park (both in Venezuela). At that time, Oscar was returning from Cuba, and with a new event, Oswaldo, upon seeing the show, pondered the difference between the two artists.

The Panamanian star was well-managed by his team. However, when it came to judging which was the better show, it was Oscar D’ León’s. When Ponte went to talk with him, he proposed becoming his manager on the condition that Oscar follow his instructions, as he always directed everything, which Oscar accepted. From that moment, many things changed not only artistically but also personally, offering the public not just Oscar D’ León and his orchestra, but Oscar D’ León himself, giving more charm and charisma to his audience.

One of the challenges he had to face was a stagnation in record sales. His new record productions weren’t taking off, so he decided to rely on television. Venezuela was both a recipient and a transmitter country, so his performances were broadcast on different television channels that gave great musical importance, such as ‘Siempre en Domingo,’ which covered the center and north of the American continent, and ‘Sábado Gigante,’ which covered South America, thus giving him international exposure.

One of his best and most unforgettable collaborations was with singer Celia Cruz, who was a great friend of Oscar’s. They participated in many events, one of which was in 1993, where Ralph Mercado did what he called ‘The Perfect Combination,’ which consisted of combining stars for public performances.

Participants included Oscar D’ León, Celia Cruz, Marc Anthony, La India from New York, Tito Nieves, Tony Vega, Cheo Feliciano, José Alberto El Canario, and Domingo Quiñones, of which the most recommended songs were ‘El Son de Celia y Oscar’ and ‘Vivir lo nuestro’ by Marc Anthony and La India. At that time, Oscar had left the TH label and was now with Ralph Mercado; his colleagues were Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Sergio George, Cheo Feliciano, Tito Nieves, La India, José Alberto El Canario, and other significant stars.

There are many other details and more events up to the present day, but it would be too much to explain in one article. What is very clear is that Oscar D’ León has conquered countless goals in his life, and we can all do the same in the different areas in which we operate, if we set our minds to it with determination and an iron will.

Somos Latinos in Mexico

Somos Latinos is a company based in Mexico that has specialized in the production and organization of salsa music events since 2006. We had the opportunity to speak with the General Director, Omar Gonzales, who told us that he is an Audio Engineer. Before starting the company “SOMOS LATINOS,” he worked for another company providing services to most of the international singers or musical groups that came to the country. He also mentioned that he has always liked the salsa genre, even though it’s difficult to find since it’s not the country’s native music. However, this doesn’t mean there aren’t small to medium-sized groups of “Salsa” followers.

One day, he decided to create his own office with the idea of doing something—promoting “Salsa.” Starting in 2007, they took a chance and organized their first event. After some time, the famous singer Tony Vega came to the country and gave him the opportunity to produce his first event there. Thanks to its success, “Somos Latinos” became his exclusive office in Mexico. One of their biggest successes was an event they organized with the salsa artists N’Klabe and NG2, who were known as “The Pioneers of the Future of Salsa.” The salsa fans who attended the event applauded like never before, as it was a world-class show.

The company currently has 10 years of experience and is known for:

  • An extensive roster of artists.
  • A solid reputation for event production, recognized as a reliable and trustworthy production company, earning the confidence of the public, their clients, and the artists they promote and represent.
  • Broad knowledge of musical genres and an excellent team trained for massive events.
  • Having the necessary equipment and infrastructure for event production (stages, audio, backline, lighting, voltage generators, giant LED screens, and other technology to create top-level shows).

Omar also mentioned that to celebrate their anniversary, they created the “Somos Latinos International Salsa Festival,” their most important event, which has been held 8 times in different parts of Mexico, such as “Mexico City,” “State of Mexico,” and the “State of Veracruz.” In the latter, they participated as organizers and suppliers for the fourth edition of the Boca del Río International Salsa Festival 2014, the world’s largest salsa event, which takes place over 4 days (with an average attendance of 120,000 people per day). This event has earned the State of Veracruz recognition as the world capital of salsa.

Orchestra “Real Expression”. Relay youth in Afro-Caribbean music

The “Real Expression” Orchestra was born under the initiative of a group of friends who converged during the 90’s as part of their free time and to liven up their family parties.

Empirical musicians moved by the passion for the salsa genre and their musical preferences chose a series of songs to inspire their repertoire of “hard sauce” paying homage to orchestras such as: Los Satélites, Fruko y sus Tesos, Dimensión Latina, Roberto Blades, among others.

Relaunching

The “Real Expression” Orchestra in 2016 had an unexpected loss. Its founder Oswaldo García and pianist of the group, exercising his role as a GNB official, lost his life in a confrontation.

This moment marked a silence in the Royal Expression Orchestra, which after the physical disappearance of Oswaldo, could not find a path to musical growth and there was no longer reason to celebrate.

After a year, his son Wladimir A. García, who learned the magic of the piano from his father, decides again to summon these friends of his father to continue the legacy that was Oswaldo’s passion in life.

During the year 2018, the “homemade” rehearsals and the desire to consolidate the group continued and in December of that year Wladimir Alexander formally decided to start piano lessons with the teacher Alberto Crespo, a Venezuelan pianist recognized in the salsa scene for his participation. in Bands such as Bailatino, and professionalize their innate skills in order to take on the challenge of Musical Direction of the Orchestra, under a concept of varied salsa repertoire and coupling talents of different ages in order to capture audiences of all ages.

With this impetus and desire, “Orquesta Real Expression” was born with a group of musicians of all ages and periods, a fresh and original repertoire with a “street tumbao”, extolling what is born at night in the Caracas parish “23 de January” cradle of salsa par excellence and in homage to all “street and guataca” dancers.

Musicians

After the call, many musicians were encouraged to participate, including Gilberto Gil (tumbadoras) who has been supporting Wladimir Alexander since he took over the orchestra, we consider him “the brother of the house”.

There is also Gonzalo Ribas (singer) of the old school with an original soneo and a musician by vocation formally dedicated to the business of selling spare parts. In the voice is also part of this project Jeanmicet Canónico, singer with a career in traditional Venezuelan music.

Jeanmicet is currently part of the “Francisco Pacheco y su Pueblo” Project and his son, also renowned percussionist Roland Orozco, decided to join the percussion base for “Real Expression” with Luis Urbina.

On bass we are accompanied by “Yimmito León” from the family of the great Oscar D’ León, son of Yimmy Leon. The sax is represented by Javier José Torres Perez (saxophonist and flutist).

Following the line of brass Meyderson Rada (trumpet) who also belongs to the project of Francisco Pacheco y su Pueblo, and as arranger and bass Premmlim Villamizar of the new generation of, under the direction of Wladimir Alexander singer and piano.

The repertoire includes songs covered by orchestras such as Los Satélites, Grupo Canela de Colombia, Spanish Harlem, Hildemaro, Eddy Santiago, Eddie Palmieri, Oscar D’ León, among others.

Hindy & his Orchestra “The Sonera of the Moment”

Hindy Singer of the Latin genre, with a high and extensive artistic career in salsa.

Hindy born in San Félix – Edo. Bolívar, in the south east of Venezuela, in 27 years of artistic career, has enriched her musical career through her different participations as a soloist, chorister, singer-songwriter and producer.

His beginnings in the Venezuelan salsa music elite are with a first place in the Record Report, at the hands of the international producer César Monges “Albóndiga” interpreting in his production “De Regreso a mi País” the version of the song A Flor de Piel del Venezuelan singer-songwriter Yordano Di Marzo, being in turn the leading voice of the Monges orchestra “Latín Girls” under the representation of Korta Records of the businessman “Negro Mendoza”.

Among some of the national and international celebrities with whom he has participated on different stages are: Cheo Feliciano, Viti Ruiz, Henry Fiol, Roberto Blades, Jr. Gonzáles, Paquito Guzmán, Richie Ray & Bobby Cruz, Gilberto S, Wladimir Lozano, Erick Franchesqui , Paquito Barón, Gustavo Rodríguez, Armando Manzanero, Pancho Céspedes, Gran Combo, S. There is a long way to go, if it can be said, in the “short” artistic career of Hindy Castillo. His jump to internationalism was in 2007-08 to Europe, where he participated for two consecutive summers in different popular music orchestras touring more than 30 cities in Spain, and in France.

His next artistic stop was in the state of Mexico.

Hindy was selected to assemble an international orchestra and travel from Venezuela to do a 3-month tour, which lasted another 13 months, the immediate rapport of all its members was a total success, profiling a true blunderbuss in the salsa environment. Veracruz.

She was also chosen to participate in the 1st Boca del Río salsa festival and, among other presentations, shared the stage with the great composer Armando Manzanero and Pancho Céspedes, extending her presentations to Guatemala City. Later, she travels to the capital, DF, invited by a local producer, who, seduced by her talent, encourages her with her orchestra to perform on different stages of the Aztec capital, capturing the taste of the Mexican music lover and salsa dancer, who turn to her presentations. to appreciate and enjoy his voice and the special talent of the soneo Salsoso.

Hindy musicalizes, produces her first songs and debuts as a singer-songwriter, under the executive production of her representative Carlos Zapata.

They record four songs sprinkled with romanticism, maintaining the bases of “hard” salsa and with novel musical variants.

Flamenco was one of these variants that played an important role in this product since its mixture with salsa resulted in a very genuine and fresh sound, from the pen of select Venezuelan arrangers. Graduated instructor of Popular Singing.
