Originally from Boca Mar, in the beautiful port of Acapulco, Mexico.

From a musical family lineage, from the age of 3 she began her interest in the artistic medium; despite this her parents did not agree that she should dedicate herself to this career, but motivated by the musical taste of her mother she was inspired by great divas of the genre such as Mrs. Celia Cruz, La Lupe, Celeste Mendoza, Mercedita Valdes and Omara Portuondo.

She alternated with the Cuban actor and singer Zamorita, who invited her to sing solo in the well-known ECO Program and from there encouraged her to sing tropical music, since it was more in line with her image and voice; Later she got a job at the emblematic Blanquita Theater where she alternated with the legendary Sonora Santanera of Carlos Colorado, where she had the opportunity to compete against representatives of several Latin American countries in the international program “Sábado Gigante” with Don Francisco, in the section known as “Tropicalísimo” winning first place shared with Venezuela and thanks to her triumph she was discovered by the Director of Radio Tropical in Mexico, Mr. Manuel Durán, who recommended her to the Vice President of Musivisa, Mr. José Manuel Presa.

The Company was interested in her and from then on Santa signed a contract with Fonovisa Tropical. La Acapulqueña recorded her first production in Mexico City, titled “No me Provoques”, which was presented on August 15, 1994 at the Salón Verde y Oro of XEW Radio.

The second production “Lo Quiero a Morir” was recorded in Puerto Rico (in the then Gran Combo studio) for its internationalization, the song of the same name, was placed in the first place of popularity in the island itself, some countries of Central America and the United States of America.

The third production “Santa la Fiera” was recorded in the city of Miami, under the label On Top Records and produced by the renowned composer Victor Daniel, author of “La Vida es un Carnaval” with songs of more varied genre such as: “No vale la pena llorar”, “Tú eres hielo” and “Soy demasiado Mujer”.

After an absence, Santa resumed his career in 2012, with his fourth production “Yo soy santa para ti”, from which he managed to three singles “No tengas miedo”, “Sólo mírame” and “Como agua entre las manos”.

Santa has had the opportunity to participate in numerous television programs, as well as massive festivals, to mention a few: opening of the “Festival Boca del Río Veracruz, 1995” “Los Maestros de la Salsa 1996” (in Mexico City) “La Convención de Radio y Música 1996” (in Puerto Rico), “Festival 5 de Mayo 1997” (in Chicago), “Fiesta Mexicana de Raisin y Milwakee”, “Teletón Internacional de Chicago”, “Viva Chicago y Teletón de Honduras”.

As well as international television programs such as “En Vivo”, “Hoy con Daniela, Zambombazo, Pácetelas”:, “Un Nuevo Día” and “Siempre en Domingo”, “Dr. Simi”, who dedicated a special to him, to mention a few”.

He has also had the opportunity to perform with great figures of his genre, such as: Tito Puente (who was his godfather), Celia Cruz, Jerry Rivera, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Grupo Niche, Eddie Santiago, Cheo Feliciano, Rey Ruiz, Los Hermanos Rosario, La Ponceña, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, Luis Enrique, among many others. In 2012 she resumes her career after an absence, she returns with her production “Yo soy santa para ti” placing herself in the taste of the genre lovers with songs like “Sólo mírame” “No tengas miedo” “Arrepentida”.

In 2013 she released the single “Llorarás” from her production “Yo soy como soy”, which includes unpublished songs, under the direction of the Veracruz producer and arranger Xavier Reyes.

Most of the songs were recorded in Mexico City, with the exception of “No quiero más mentiras” in New York, and “Mío primero” in Puerto Rico” with musicians of international stature. It includes two duets “Amiga” with Frakie Ruiz Jr. and “Cosas del amor” with Ariana Dao as well as the covers “Bidi, bidi, bom, bom” and “Si una vez” as a tribute to Selena Quintanilla.

After his tour he took a short break from music to participate in a short theater production dedicated to the “divo de Juárez” Juan Gabriel, called “Ya lo sé que tú te vas”, which he enjoyed very much in his acting career.

In addition, she received awards in her country such as the AMS AWARD for best female Salsera and the “Candilejas de oro” for her career.

She also participated as a host in the magazine show “Reventón musical”.

In 2018 she was invited to participate in the project “Divas de la salsa”, which took place in New York City representing Mexico and sharing the stage with various divas of the genre from other countries.

In May 2019, she toured Canada for 3 months, leaving her mark and in the last quarter of the same year, she travels to Colombia to continue expanding in the international market.

Her salsa version of “Si una vez” gives her the surprise to be placed naturally in the taste of the Colombian public and, as a result, the doors are opened to participate in events of the Feria de Cali alternating with the most important figures of the genre; she also participated as a special guest to sing in the tribute made to the master Gilberto Santa Rosa.

Once again Santa had the opportunity to leave her country high and show that Mexico also has and makes its good “molcajete salsa” as she calls it, inspired by these joyful Caribbean countries.

Back in Mexico, Santa started her online entertainment program “Santa con Ton y Son” with Raul Silva “El Titan de la Salsa” as her partner, which lasted only a short time on the air, due to some commitments she had to fulfill in the U.S. that were postponed because of the COVID pandemic; However, in the meantime Santa dedicated himself to write some songs that reflect feelings generated from that global chaos, such as “Chao Chao” which he recorded in Mexico City in December of 2021 as a duet with Ricardo Amador, accompanied by La Internacional Orquesta Controversia, of which a live video was recorded with great acceptance.

Miguel “Angá” Díaz the percussionist who made his name in the ranks of Cuba’s legendary and enigmatic Irakere group

Miguel “Angá” Díaz (1961-2006) was a valuable and prolific Cuban percussionist. With his explosive solos and the creation of five conga toques, “Angá” was widely acclaimed as one of the world’s great congueros.

One of the mainstays of Afro-Cuban rhythm in recent times, Angá played with a multitude of jazz stars, from Chucho Valdés, Chick Corea or Steve Coleman, to Roy Hargrove, Minino Garay, Chano Domínguez and Herbie Hancock, among others.

The claim that he was one of the best percussionists in the world is backed up by the Grammy awards he won, his participation in such important projects as Buena Vista Social Club and the Afro-Cuban All Stars, and his status as sideman of geniuses like Tito Puente, Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana or Danilo Pérez, as well as his membership in legendary groups like Irakere, according to Más i Más, the organizer of his concerts in Barcelona.

Father of three daughters – the eldest living in Cuba and the two younger ones in Paris – Angá never stopped searching for new forms of musical expression, experimenting with the fusion of different styles, such as jazz, African sounds, rock and hip-hop.

He was committed to the development of the conga, breaking the traditional barriers of percussion, to introduce them into classic Latin rhythms while preserving their distinctly Cuban roots.

He played with several Cuban artists, including Irakere, Afro-Cuban All Stars, Buena Vista Social Club, Omar Sosa, Omara Portuondo, Tata Güines, Rubén González and Orishas.

At that time he recorded and toured frequently with international musicians such as Steve Coleman, Roy Hargrove, Baba Sissoko, Ry Cooder, Pascal Coulon, Mezzadri Malik, Montgomery Buddy, Pascal Coulon and John Patitucci. Angá’s musical journey was a personal quest to investigate and create new sounds and rhythmic fusions.

More than just an artist, Angá demonstrated his commitment to the development of his instrument, teaching master classes at various schools and universities in North America and throughout Europe.

Angá Díaz received his formal education at the Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana, Cuba, and after joining the Latin jazz groups Opus 13 and Irakere, where he perfected his conga playing technique, he moved to Europe, where he devoted himself to exploring the fusion of styles, bringing Cuban music closer to other musics and thoroughly investigating the relationship between Afro-Cuban polyrhythms and technology.

In the summer of 2005, Angá released his first solo album EChu Mingua, which the musician himself described as “a musical religious mass. Spiritual music is when the spirits are invoked to come down to earth, inviting them to a party or to talk to them”, and that is “the whole concept of the album”.

Transgressor of conventions, Angá emerged as an independent, free and committed musician with a wide variety of projects, from experimental jazz with Steve Coleman and Roy Hargrove, and hip-hop with the Orishas, to his participation in Omar Sosa’s tours, in addition to participating in numerous alternative projects with musicians from all over the world.

Angá’s musical trajectory was a tireless search, whose main purpose was to explore and create new sounds, as well as rhythmic fusions.

José Fajardo was a virtuoso flutist, composer, orchestra conductor and music producer

José Antonio Fajardo, in the month of November we refer to one of the greatest musicians that the island of Cuba has given in the last century; we are talking about maestro José Antonio Fajardo Ramos: flutist, composer, orchestra conductor and music producer; one of the great promoters of Cuban music represented in the rhythms of bolero, son, guaracha, mambo, chachachá and pachanga.

José Fajardo was born in Guane, province of Pinar del Río in 1919. He began his musical career as a maraquero in his father Alberto Fajardo’s orchestra, later he took up the flute.

From the age of 16 he was part of several groups such as: Joseíto Fernández, Paulina Álvarez, Melodías del 40, La Romance de René Álvarez, the orchestra of maestro Antonio María Romeu, the orchestra of pianist Luis González Valdés: “Neno” González and the orchestra of Antonio Arcaño, known as Arcaño y sus Maravillas.

After his time in these famous groups, in 1949, Fajardo created his own orchestra called Fajardo y sus Estrellas, with musicians such as: Orlando “Cachaito López”, René Fernández on piano, violinists Ignacio Berroa and Félix Reyna, who was also the composer; percussionist Jesús Esquijarrosa on timbales; Carlos Real on tumbadora and Rolando Valdés on güiro; in the vocal part he initially integrated Joseito Valdés.

In the early fifties, with the boom of chachachá in 1951, things improved a lot and the charangas orchestras began to perform in the best cabarets, aristocratic salons and private parties of high society, such as the Montmatre and Tropicana cabarets.

Fajardo became internationally known in the mid 50’s at the head of his orchestra, Fajardo y sus Estrellas, he was the first charanguero to introduce the cymbals to the timbal and the pioneer in the incorporation of the cowbell and the bongo to the charanga, his group was one of the sensations of the golden age of chachacha and pachanga.

After going into exile in the 1960s, he toured Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America, popularizing an eminently Cuban repertoire.

Maestro José Fajardo has been one of the only musicians who have stood out in different periods of Latin music; initially in Cuba, in the 50’s with the arrival of Chachachá, later in the era of Pachanga and Boogaloo, in the sixties in the United States, and he also came to prominence in the golden era of salsa in the seventies and eighties of the last century.

In the seventies, eighties and later, the flute master recorded with Joe Quijano & His Conjunto Cachana, Tico-Alegre All Stars; Ray Barretto and Adalberto Santiago; Johnny Pacheco, Pupi, Javier Y Su Charanga; Jimmy Sabater, Orlando Contreras, Alfredo Valdés Jr, Fania All Stars, Louie Ramirez, Graciela and Mario Bauza, Israel “Cachao” Lopez, with our great Joe Arroyo in the nineties and with Hector Casanova, Mario Muñoz, Andy Gonzalez, Eddie Montalvo, Manny Oquendo, Alfredo “Chocolate” Armenteros, Carlos “Patato” Valdes, Alfredo Rodriguez and Francisco Aguabella.

After a brilliant musical career spanning more than six decades, Maestro José Antonio Fajardo passed away in New York City on December 11, 2001, leaving an enormous legacy to our culture.

Commemorates 30 Years With A Display Of International Latin Jazz Artists

EFG London Jazz Festival celebrates its 30th birthday with the innovation and musical freedom that has always characterized the London Jazz scene.

This festival, the largest and in constant transition in North London, opens its space from Friday, November 11^th to Sunday, November 20^th to present a program of live and digital presentations with world-class artists, emerging talents, collaborations specials, avant-garde sounds, and the latest music for a massive audience that has established the EFG London Jazz Festival https://efglondonjazzfestival.org.uk/ as one of the main international Jazz events in Europe.

This emblematic event in the United Kingdom has three outstanding aspects that have characterized it over the years, they are Character, Impulse, and Wealth. The Character is evidenced in each edition with the contribution of special collaborations, discoveries, and exclusive commissions. The second aspect of this festival is the Impulse, being this event the highlight of the Jazz calendar in the capital. Vocalist, pianist, songwriter, and producer, Fiona Ross, has become known for having an authentic contemporary Jazz sound obtained by mixing the fast rhythm of Latin Jazz, a brief flirtation with vintage Jazz, a bit of Neo Soul, and a touch of melancholy ballads.

Multi-award-winning Jazz artist, editor-in-chief, journalist, and founder of the award-winning organization Women in Jazz Media Fiona Ross was Director of the British Academy of New Music in London for nearly a decade, where she was responsible for the formation of Ed Sheeran, Rita Ora, among many others. This multifaceted 10-day event brings to its lineup the established singer within the Latin music industry for the last two decades, Yuri Hernández. The establishment that will host it will be Juju’s Bar & Stage (Ely’s Yard, 15 Hanbury St, London E1 6QR) on Sunday, November 13^th from 6 PM, and the cost of the ticket doesn’t exceed £9.

Hernández is one of the most sought-after musicians in northern Spain and is introduced to the UK Latin Jazz scene through Loco Soñador, his second studio album released in 2020. Joining this musical genius will be DJ Flecha (Joel Verdecia) with his supporting act promoting Cuban music. This veteran DJ (25 years of career) has been nominated three times as Best Latin Tropical DJ in a European country for his technique and originality when mixing.

This Afro-Latin and Jazz music band, Colectiva, reflects on themes of sisterhood and female empowerment. They are rooted in the sounds of Africa, Latin America, and the diaspora, creating a genre that the group has dubbed Jazz Tropicaliente (Hot/Tropical/Jazz). Their debut single is Under The, written in collaboration with pianist María Grapsa and released in April 2021. This track received great support from global radio stations and famous DJs in the music industry.

Colectiva will be presented on November 17^th at 8:30 PM at the London Kings Place-Hall Two-(90 York Way, N1 9AG), and tickets have a permanent price of £15.

On the other hand, Osvaldo Chacón’s band is the leading Timba orchestra in the UK and has been nominated multiple times for the prestigious LUKAS awards. Osvaldo Chacón, composer, producer, and singer-songwriter, has shared the stage with great Salsa figures such as Adalberto Santiago, Azuquita, Tito Allen (Fania All Stars), Salsaceltica, Eddie Palmieri, as well as the greatest world-famous stars such as Celia Cruz, Oscar D’León, Rubén Blades, and Alberto “El Canario”. The EFG London Jazz Festival brings the Cuban pianist, composer, and arranger Chucho Valdés, who celebrates his 80th birthday with his extraordinary work La Creación with the Yoruban Orchestra and Hilario Durán & John Beasley.

The winner of six Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards is the most influential figure in Afro-Cuban Jazz of the 20th and 21st centuries. In an extensive career spanning six decades, Valdés has pushed the boundaries of new expressions in Afro-Cuban music. His influence and inspiration in the genre are immeasurable to the point that his work sets the standard by which new generations are governed and drives their careers. To see Chucho Valdés head to the London Southbank Center (Royal Festival Hall, Belvedere Road SE1 8XX) at 7:30 PM. and tickets range from £30 – £45.

Along with Chucho will be the cellist, vocalist, composer, and niece Ana Carla Maza. Within her discography is the album La Flor (2020) which incorporates Latin rhythms, Pop melodies and Jazz harmonies along with classical techniques. Bahía (June 26, 2022) is her most recent production inspired by Cuban Son, Samba, Bossa Nova, Tango, Jazz, and Chanson with a rich mix of classical cello and voice.

Someone to look out for is percussionist/bandleader/catalyst Javier Navarette who has been creating a serious buzz with his new group Javier Navarette and His Socially Distant Friends which features a “who’s who” of stellar Bay Area talent including esteemed violinist Anthony Blea, vocalist/percussionist Hector Lugo, rising star on the guitar, Kai Lyons, bassist Ayla Davila, percussionist Jesse Weber and charter members such as tresero/guitarist Camilo Landau, NY based trombonist and Javier’s brother Raul Navarette and PMO vocalist Chriselle Durandy. La Peña Cultural Center, 3105 Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley has been gaining a lot of notoriety with their monthly Baila events. The June edition will also celebrate the cultural center’s 47th Anniversary on Friday, June 17th starting at 7 pm. Corey Raynor, the venue’s production manager who organizes the event will also be celebrating his birthday. The show will feature the explosive sounds of veteran timbalero Eric Rangel and his Orquesta America as well as KPOO/KPFA DJ Jose Ruiz in the main theater and DJ Ron Palma in the Bachata lounge. It’s Summertime and outdoor venues have opened back up for Salsa, Timba and Latin Jazz! Modupue Sundays at Rocky’s Market at Oakland’s Brooklyn Basin is featuring the exciting band La Mixta Criolla on Sunday, June 5 under the direction of percussionist/vocalist Hector Lugo and a special Bomba dance performance by Shefali Shah. The festivities start at 5:30 pm. Another great band Orquesta La Moderna Tradición will be at Rocky’s on Friday night, June 10th from 6 to 9 pm. The Office on 1796 Willow Pass Road in downtown Concord is now offering Rumba Sundays every Sunday from 5 to 10 pm in a large, covered outdoor patio with a huge dance floor featuring Salsa bands such as Orquesta Taino on Sunday, June 5th. The Office features live salsa monthly with SF Salsa Congress staple DJ Super Chino spinning Salsa, Bachata and more in-between the breaks! Check out their Facebook page for more info!

The Cigar Bar continues with their mission to bring you exciting danceable bands in their unique venue that combines great food, fine drinks, a parlor for cigar enthusiasts and a hot dance spot for weekend patrons. The June Latin music offerings are the following: Pacho y Orchesta Evolution 6/3; Orquesta La Original w/Alexis 6/4; Orquesta Borinquen 6/10; Josh Jones Latin Jazz Ensemble 6/11; N’Rumba 6/17 ; Manteca 6/18; Orquesta Taino 6/24 and La Clave Del Blanco on 6/25.

The Ramp is heating things up for the Summer at their fine outdoor venue with their huge dance floor at 855 Terry Francois Blvd in San Francisco. Their calendar includes great acts on Saturday afternoons starting at 4 pm with DJ Mendy with live music starting at 5 pm featuring N’Rumba on 6/4; Julio Bravo y Salsabor on 6/11; Somos El Son with Braulio Barrera 6/18 and Orquesta Borinquen on 6/25.

The Seahorse in Sausalito features fine Italian cuisine, beer and wine and a fine space for dancing on Saturday and Sundays starting at 6 pm with KPOO/KPFA DJ Jose Ruiz.
