Birdland announces the new Latin Live Jazz Shows this February

The famous Latin Jazz’s Nightclub brings to their stage four renowned artists of the New York Jazz scene to present their biggest hits during this month

Birdland kicks off the New Latin Live Jazz Shows with Arturo O’Farrill, a modern composer and pianist. He combines European harmony and instruments with those from India, Africa, and the Caribbean to bring a never heard ensemble sound to bear.

“Resist” comprises a weaving together of different influences into a new fabric, partly rough-textured, but with an internal dialogue that honors of each musical idea. There is the combination of flute (Alejandro Aviles) and tuba (Earl McIntyre) – two ends of the tonal and pitch spectrum, in duet with one another plus trumpet (Adam O’Farrill).

Sometimes they play the same notes, only octaves apart, and sometimes in counterpoint with one another. Latin percussion (Carlos “Carly” Maldonado) combines with African drums (Neil Clarke) and drum set (Zack O’Farrill), held together by the bassist Bambam Rodriguez. Special guest slam poet Baba Israel is also featured.

Continuing with the Live Jazz entertaiment in this famous Nigthclub will be Claudia Acuña, celebrating the release of her album “TURNING PAGES”. This new album is an exquisite reintroduction to a singer who has thrived at the cusp of jazz and Latin American music.

Henry Benavides surprises with “Por Cuenta Propia,” his new project

Henry Benavides, arranger, composer, pianist and producer of tropical music with emphasis on Salsa, was born in Barrancabermeja, Santander, Colombia.

In York, NY March 31, 2023 ‘Por Cuenta Propia’ is the name of Henry Benavides’ new project, with which he wishes to elevate his musical career. The Colombian composer, pianist, arranger, and producer of tropical music pays homage to great artists of the industry with his new album.

“The production is inspired by the great salseros who inﬂuenced my musical beginnings, such as Richie Ray and Papo Lucca.

The songs I chose marked my childhood, and in my new album I seek to give it a modern and different touch with my arrangements,” shares Benavides.

It is worth noting that the album is musically diverse. Despite being known for revolutionizing the tropical industry, Benavides shows us that even playing boleros, he is capable of transforming and creating new stories.

Henry Benavides, arranger, composer, pianist and producer of tropical music with emphasis on Salsa, was born in Barrancabermeja, Santander.

He inherited from his grandparents the taste for music, at the age of 12 he began to play the drums induced by his father.

He graduated as a high school graduate from the industrial technical institute in the year 2000, and by then he already had clear what would be his life project, to live for music.

He decided to travel in 2002 to Pamplona, Norte de Santander, where he settled and enrolled in the university of this same city in the Faculty of Music to formalize his musical studies.

Shortly after entering the school he stood out among his classmates for his great talent. He was a member of the Big Band Oriol Rangel of this institution, being in his seventh semester, his teachers tell him that the knowledge he has acquired so far is the necessary, and that he really has nothing to do there, with the great talent he has, and they suggest him to go out to the arena! What prompted this Barranqueño to undertake his audacity in 2005 and decided to seek opportunities in the city of Medellin.

There he began working with Jhon Jairo Betancur making tracks and karaokes of salsa, merengues, ballads and vallenato, for Discos Fuentes recording pianos and then produced them, being in charge of everything for 2 and a half years, time that was enough to make known his talent which gave him the opportunity to work with the master Alberto Barros in the musical direction of the tribute to the Colombian salsa, and zone three, and to make a production for Panamanian singer Gabi Gabi Gabi.

In 2009, he was invited to record in the city of Cali, an opportunity that he did not miss to seek new alternatives in his career and decided to seek the maestro Alexis Lozano, director of the orchestra Guayacán, to show him his work done during all these years.

He was lucky enough to meet him, and show his talent, which led to an exchange of knowledge and great musical connection between the two and immediately Alexis made it concrete and proposed him to produce music immediately.

In 2012 he directs and produces for Sony music in Mexico, the DVD “La Salsa de los Grandes”, a tribute to the Fania All Stars, with the participation of the best singers and musicians of the world salsa. Considered this work as the most representative of his career for having obtained GOLD and PLATINUM DISC, becoming the only Santandereano to obtain historically this recognition.

In addition to this, he was the author, composer and producer of songs such as YO SOY BARRANQUEÑO, where he pays tribute to his hometown, and EL HINCHA NÚMERO UNO, a song dedicated to his alma team, Alianza Petrolera.

She currently has a music production company, where she makes local, national and international productions, and at the same time has formed her orchestra, with musicians representative of her city, with which she has had the honor of being the only one to accompany an international artist, this being another historic achievement.

In this year 2020 he will launch his new production, entitled “Mi Vida”, which contains 10 unpublished songs of composition, arrangement and production, a dream that began 10 years ago and will close a very important cycle in the life of this young and talented artist.

Among other projects, he is the Musical Director of #salsagang, a project to promote new talents that is currently focused on the Mexican market, as it is one of the most important places for tropical music.

The three-time Grammy winner Spanish Harlem Orchestra has an undeniable impact on the perception of the public towards music in general and this is no coincidence, as the work done its members has an unsurpassed quality.

These salsa veterans have always been characterized by looking for a raw and organic sound based on the past, something that does not prevent them from being focused on the future. On each album, they are very conscious that their main goal is to keep good music alive.

How this started

Once again, the salsa orchestra shows what they are really made of in their new album Imágenes Latinas, which will surely be a hit with the band’s fans. The record label in charge of releasing this recording is Ovation Records, whose owner is Oscar Hernández, pianist, composer and founder of SHO.

It is very interesting to note that Imágenes Latinas is the result of a funding model driven by the group’s fans in exchange an advance copy of the album and even a type of executive producer credit. The release show took place on May 20 at DROM, New York. There are multiple images from the show on the group’s official social media accounts, whose members thanked those present for their support.

Oscar Hernández commented that his mission and vision is to represent the history and legacy of this music, of which he feels very lucky to be part of. He also pointed out that his commitment to the music will never end and that the group explores new dimensions without deviating from its core belief. What Hernández means is that the concept and sounds are the same, but the arrangements and shows always seek to innovate one way or another.

Inspiration

The title is inspired by group Conjunto Libre, which has always been one of the main souces of inspiration for SHO. The song Imágenes Latinas was one of Conjunto Libre’s most important pieces throughout their career and talked about the evolution of the Latin American diaspora in history. SHO seeks to give a touch of modernity to the song and introduce some contemporary arrangements while respecting its original essence.

A noteworthy aspect of Imágenes Latinas is that the group travels through various moods and styles, showing the vast experience of all its musicians in each piece. A great example of this is Mi Amor Sincero, which starts with the typical sounds of the bolero until becoming a joyful cha-cha that surprises anyone who will listen. These sorts of transitions from one style to the other can be found throughout the work and its brilliant interpretations.

The album is a true reflection of SHO’s career, which is still seen as one of the leading salsa ensembles even after all these years. The quality of their work has not decreased in the least, quite the opposite. Its members continue to risk breaking ground and experiment with the novelty of music without losing focus of who they are.

Willy García releases a new album full of salsa named “Siendo Yo”

The Colombian salsa artist Willy García has surprised his fans with a new album full of salsa, of course the fast one, but where he also shows love songs hand in hand with nostalgia. Without neglecting touches of calculated risks and adventures to give all the listeners an album with a lot of great sounds, just like the one from Buenaventura has accustomed us to. Know a little more about this album with the following words.

“Mentiroso” is the title track that Willy García shows in “Siendo yo”

Mentiroso is a fast-tempo song that is exactly what Willy enjoys the most, but that doesn’t mean that the album isn’t a walk through different rhythms and tempos that offer us a glimpse into the thoughts of this great artist. There are songs in the style of “Como lo extraño” where each emigrant can feel identified with the nostalgia towards his homeland. But then we can find some risky tracks that go a bit far from his classic style.

For example, there is “Aquí le pago con esto” which is a collaboration with Cali Flow Latino where sounds of salsa, urban, tropical rhythms and holiday flavors are fused. In this way Willy wants to please his old fans but attract the new generations with modern sounds. The other songs are all romantic in style, but it is the last one on this list that Willy is most proud of,“Me enamoré de ella” is one of his favorites.

“Mujeres”, “Me Recuerda a Ti”, “Que Se Detenga el Tiempo” and “Si Eres Tu”, are all about love and romantic feelings that are precisely part of that essence that makes so many stick to the salsa genre. Another song that is worth talking about is “Cada día” which could be another hit for the radio and especially on the dance floors.

Arrangements of “Siendo Yo”

Starting with the song “Mentiroso”, it should be noted that it was mastered in New York City, recorded between Cali and Miami, with lyrics by Willy himself, in addition to the fact that he participated in the production together with the great Oscar Iván Lozano.

Among the musicians who participated in the recordings we can find many well-known names from the Colombian territory, such as Diego Galé who played the congas and the bongo, Diego Galindo, Johan Castro, Luis Araque and Christian Fernández did the choirs, while Luis Bravo and Carlos Latoche in the horn section, bassist Carlos Córdoba, timbalero Robert Vilera and Óscar Iván Lozano himself on piano.

Willy García’s career as a soloist is an incredible example that when there is talent, no matter how it is represented, it will always shine. He also received from El Espectador the “Afro-Colombian Of The Year” award in the Arts and Music category.
