What is happening now?

Tito Garcia-The Doctor of Salsa, the renowned colorful bandleader and timbalero of Tito Garcia y Orquesta Internacional passed away on Saturday, April 23rd after a long battle with cancer. Tito has performed Salsa and Charanga in the 1970’s with the seminal SF based bands Ritmo 74 and later Charanga Rene Del Mar. He later spearheaded the band “Orquesta Salsa Dulce” in the late 1980’s which morphed into the first edition of his band La International featuring a young Julio Bravo on coro in the early 1990’s. La Internacional were remembered for their explosive performances by dancers and aficionados.

Tito was a staple at the late, famed salsa palace Cafe Cocomo with his monthly “Mambo Saturdays” during the early 2000’s. I often was the DJ during those hot nights. His band featured fine musicians and vocalists such as former Batachanga vocalist Ricky Rangel, congueros Eddie Borrero and Sandy Perez of Los Muñequitos De Matanzas and keyboardist Coto Pincheira who relocated to New York.

Tito García had been fitghing against, cancer, which took his life at the end

Tito resurfaced after his bout with Cancer in 2020 to relaunch La Internacional but the comeback was short lived due to his health issues. He later hosted some outdoor rumba sessions near his new home of Vallejo but those dates were limited due to COVID restrictions. He relapsed during his recent trip to Costa Rica and died due to complications with his recovery. He will be sorely missed.

The Yerba Buena Gardens Festival will begin Saturday, May 7th from 1 to 2:30 pm with a free concert featuring local treasure Jesus Diaz y Su Habana Afro-Cuban Ensemble featuring a lineup of heavyweights from Cuba and the SF Bay including Ariacne Trujillo Duran, Leider Chappotin, Raul Pineda, Roberto Junior Vizcaino, Karl Perazzo, Jeff Cressman, Melecio Magdaluyo and Julio De La Cruz. The annual Carnaval San Francisco is back on the streets of San Francisco on Sat, May 28 and Sun. May 29th with the theme Colores De Amor. The two day festival will take place on Harrison between 17th and 22nd Streets from 11 am to 6 pm. The grand parade will take place on Sunday, May 29th starting at 9:30 am on 24th and Byrant Streets. The Ramp at 855 Terry Francois Blvd in San Francisco continues to present Salsa orchestras on Saturday afternoons starting at 5 pm. The night is closed on June 7th for a private event, The Ramp’s first Salsa festival featuring 2 bands: Gary Flores y su orquesta Salsa Caliente and Eric Rangel and Orquesta America 5/14, The Latin Rhythm Boys 5/21 and Louie Romero and Mazacote on May 28th. DJ Mendy spins in-between sets and after the live music from 9 to 11 pm. The Ramp has a great patio overlooking the SF Bay and serves food and drinks.

DJ Walt Digz has a hot Wednesday night Cuban scene “El Timbon” happening at the Slate Bar, 2925-16th Street in San Francisco. Digz also hosts his own livestream called “El Timbon” featuring the latest Timba, Cuban Salsa and Cubaton videos every Tuesday night from 7 to 9 pm on Twitch. He also keeps busy by hosting the monthly Fresquecito Saturday nights at La Furia Chalaca in Oakland and the outdoor El Timbon En El Callejon Sundays from 3 to 8 pm at Vida Cantina, 56 Belden Place in San Francisco. Palladium in the New Millenium engalana el “Lehman Center for the Performing Arts”

On March 5, 2022, the heirs to the mambo will reunite once again, this time the concert entitled Palladium in the New Millennium will grace the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts in the heart of New York’s Bronx.

This concert coincides with the coming of age celebration of the establishment of The Big Three Palladium Orchestra. The initial idea of bringing together the three great Palladium orchestras in this innovative concept came to Mario Grillo, better known in the music world as Machito, Jr. approximately twenty-one years ago.

His counterpart, Tito Rodriguez, Jr. told me about it and, thanks to his complicity, I had a pleasant conversation during which Machito, Jr. shared with me a myriad of details. Having previously collected and shared the conversations I had with Tito, Jr. and later with Machito, Jr. I must now share the point of view of the youngest of the three mambo heirs -Tito Puente, Jr.- about this trilogy, among other things. During the beginnings of this historic reunion, Tito Puente, Jr. was barely 30 years old.

As with me, the two oldest members of the trilogy have been very supportive of Tito Puente, Jr. During an exclusive interview granted for this special assignment, Tito Puente, Jr. expressed his deep appreciation for having been so lovingly guided by Tito Rodriguez, Jr. and Machito, Jr. to the recording of what has become the legacy of the Palladium big three: The Big Three Palladium Orchestra live at the Blue Note (2004).

The youngest of the three heirs of the mambo is doubly celebrating, as he has just released his sixth production, entitled The King and I. It contains nine tracks, as you can hear on the album. It contains nine tracks, as detailed below: Picadillo, featuring Humberto Ramírez on trumpet; Salsa na ma, featuring José Alberto “El Canario” on vocals; Pa los rumberos, with a masterful performance by Domingo Quiñones; Oye como va, with a performance by “Mulato Rumbero”, Michael Stuart; Para la niña y pa la señora, with none other than Miguel Angel Barcasnegras, better known as “Meñique” (EPD) on vocals; Hong Kong mambo, instrumental theme that highlights the Puente dynasty, with Ronnie Puente on xylophone; El bribón del aguacero, with Yolanda Duke on vocals; 20 años and El Rey del Timbal. Let’s be clear that this album is not the big band arrangement to which the eternal King of the Timbal has accustomed us. It is, however, the best tribute that the youngest of the three heirs of the Palladium pays to his father, keeping the legacy alive and kicking.

As you can see, each of the “Palladium’s Big Three” inherited a timbalero son. Coincidentally, Machito, Jr., Tito Rodríguez, Jr. and Tito Puente, Jr. grew up surrounded by music. Their family environments, respectively, supported them. Indeed, today, all three are musicians. These three bandleaders have made it their mission to keep the Palladium legacy alive and well. Although the mambo heirs have transcended the label of being the sons of the mambo owners, they do not forget that the Patriarchs are still a topic of conversation in musical circles around the world.

As the past is the past and the future is uncertain, here we are already waiting in despair. For this new reunion, first-class musicians have been secured, backing up the three heirs of the mambo. The musical constellation that will be part of this historic night is formed by: Carmen Laboy on baritone saxophone and musical direction, Jorge Castro on tenor saxophone, Mark Friedman and Al Acosta on alto saxophones; Larry Moses, Seneca Black, Mike Mossman, and John Carlson on trumpets; Gilberto Colón, Jr. on piano, Jerry Madera on bass, John “Dandy” Rodríguez on bongo and Eddie Montalvo on tumbadoras. On the vocal front, Sammy Gonzalez, Jr. leads with Luisito Rosario and Jeremy Montalvo on backing vocals.

I for one continue to live in salsa, which to put it in more earthly terms is, simply put: magic, fantasy, and illusion.

As usual, Johnny Cruz brings us the latest news about the world of salsa in New York. This month is very special, as there are currently many new musical productions made by some of the most famous Latin music groups of recent times. In addition, we talk a little about upcoming events at one of the most recognized venues in all of New York.

New recording by El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico

It was recently announced that El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico has released its latest album entitled De Trulla Con El Combo, the first Christmas musical work in decades. The album contains a total of 10 songs with a focus on lighthearted and Christmas themes, which are very popular in the Island of Enchantment. This could make more than one boricua return to his roots and remember what this wonderful time of year was like at his birthplace.

Let us recall that the orchestra had already released a Christmas album called La Fiesta de Pilito in 1985, so it is not the first time that the Puerto Rican group experiences this type of themes for some of its musical productions.

Something that makes Rafael Ithier, director of the orchestra, very proud is that they managed to create the album in a very short time, thing that did not happen with their other Christmas works. Evidently, these times of pandemic were extremely productive for the Gran Combo, which is very near to celebrating its 60-year artistic career. Despite the prolonged time, this group of musicians has not yet lost what makes them unique in the public’s eyes.

New Christmas album by La Sonora Ponceña

As well as the previous case, La Sonora Ponceña has done the same and released a new Christmas album entitled Christmas Star, which would be the fourth musical work of this kind that the group has done in its entire artistic career.

What most characterizes this musical production is the use of themes that are largely related to the holiday season in Puerto Rico, something that will undoubtedly create a nostalgia feeling in many who listen to it.

Enrique Pappo Lucca said they want to present a work which is as faithful as possible to the musical quality that has always characterized La Sonora Ponceña, but without losing the essence of what this season is and what it represents for Puerto Ricans.

This album is available on digital platforms and physical stores for those who wish to purchase it and celebrate Christmas with this incredible group in the background.

Events at the Lehman Center for the Arts in the coming months

The first big event at the Lehman for the Arts in January will be Manny Cruz’s first performance in the establishment. This talented Dominican will be delighting the audience on January 29 at 8 pm. It is worth mentioning that Cruz has been nominated for the Latin Grammy four times and the genres in which he specializes are ballad, pop, merengue and bachata.

Almost a month later, Ballet Folklorico de Mexico de Amalia Hernández will perform at the Lehman Center to celebrate its 70th anniversary with a very special classical choreography for the occasion. The company’s last tour a few years ago was a resounding success and there is no doubt that this time will be no exception.

“Golpe Duro” is the new from Little Johnny Rivero

Percussionist Johnny Rivero presented his new album: Golpe Duro

The renowned percussionist released his new album called “Golpe Duro” with his band “El Cartel de Nueva York” which is released under the Mod Squad, LLC label. This would be Mr. Rivero’s third studio production. On this occasion he is also accompanied by vocalist Anthony Almontes, who together with the music created by Johnny have 9 wonderful songs.

“We had a lot of fun making this album @vamoalmonte … Golpe Duro Available Now !!” The percussionist said with a picture posted on his Instagram account where he is with Anthony, showing how much they enjoyed making this album.

The first song of this album, which was released in digital format on October 9 and as a preview of the complete album, is “Quien te ha dicho” which has the participation of the violinists Raúl Roa and Laura Pérez, but also shows a congas solo by Rivero himself; the same song is a loving message that carries an incredible cadence that ends in the congas solo.

The song that gives the album its name “Golpe Duro” is a representation of Rivero’s career, history and achievements which is demonstrated with congas solo where we repeatedly hear his name. Another of the outstanding songs on this album is “Chinita Monda”, composed by Anthony Almonte and with time of Son Montuno, it also features the participation of Nelson González on tres and Jeremy Bosch on flute.

The remaining 6 songs are Mi Corazón Te Llama, Falta De Conciencia, Mi Son Asere, Listo Pa’ La Pelea, Sombra De Lluvia y Pide Que Hay. Which were composed by Eric Figueroa, Héctor Dávila, Anthony Almonte, Jeremy Bosch, Zaccai Curtis, Little Johnny and one of the guest Eddie Palmieri.

The official video for “Quien te ha dicho” was released on November 20, where musicians from various countries were brought together through technology, to perform the title song of this album. Little Johnny himself wrote on his Instagram account:

A bit of Little Johnny Rivero’s career

An international artist

Johnny Rivero was born in New York but moved to Puerto Rico, where he found his passion for music, until he achieved a place in the band La Sonora Ponceña with which he recorded 18 studio albums, which were excellently received by the salsa family. He has worked together and shared the stage with many great artists, such as nine-time Latin Grammy winner Eddie Palmieri.

He has also formed salsa and jazz bands where he brings together musicians from various parts of the world. In addition to teaching percussion at Kennedy High School in the Bronx in New York, it was there that he met Anthony Almonte who accompanies him in this new studio album, what neither of them knew was that they would meet again for this piece thanks to a mutual friend Jeffery Lopez.

After that, “Golpe Duro” has only received great reviews and has been acclaimed by the best of the genre. We hope only better things will come to Little Johnny and Anthony in 2021.

Marlow Rosado talks about his two new recordings and contribution to music

Marlow Rosado “The Dalí of music” as he is known, closes the year talking about his latest productions and what is coming this 2021.

Marlow Rosado, is a Puerto Rican pianist who has made his way into the salsa genre. A very versatile and creative artist, he has been one of the lucky Latinos to be a Latin Grammy winner. He is an arranger, composer and conductor, his style delves into fusions of Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban traditions. However, he does not hesitate to reinvent himself after each musical production, without losing the flavor that has become his personal hallmark. He leans for the aggressive but fresh and modern rhythm. In addition, he is recognized for his quality productions.

Marlow Rosado talks about his two new recordings — Marlow is a Grammy winner.

“Before the issue of the pandemic, I had released an album … ‘Feminomanía’ a project where the voices are female. The musical production was at its peak, the pandemic arrived and everything came to a standstill, “said the Puerto Rican established in Miami city.

The project concentrated the diversity of different singers of the genre, among them: Carolina La O, Michelle Brava, Brenda K Starr and Aymee Nuviola. In addition, it has 13 songs and the musical participation of Marlow.

Rosado, was one of those artists who took advantage of the global pandemic to the fullest and decided not to lock themselves in apathy. During 2020, he performed two songs that marked his year. They are completely different but were made with the same love and dedication: one of salsa and another of Latin jazz.

Faced with the paralysis of activities worldwide, Marlow opted to enter the recording studio and give life to new productions.

“I went into the studio to produce another album and I started working on two at the same time. From the beginning, he had spoken with singer Frankie Negrón to do a salsa production. The album is called ‘Los colores de la salsa’ in allusion to our surnames Rosado and Negrón. Frankie recently moved to Miami, which made recording easy”, said Rosado.

The artist served as the composer of all the songs, as well as the musical arrangements.

“In the production ‘Los colores de la salsa’ there is a song called ‘Boricuas en Nueva York’ that has that Christmas air and we wanted to release it now to create an energy around those two albums that are coming in February” he added.

“Boricuas en Nueva York” with Frankie Negrón, was distributed under the JN Music Group label. The song has a Puerto Rican salsa rhythm, along with the voices of both singers who emigrated from Puerto Rico to the United States. Rosado was very pleased to work together with Negrón and to give this suitable theme for Christmas.

“Orun” is the following record production, made within the Latin jazz genre and very different from “Los Colores de la Salsa”. With this job he fulfilled a dream he had always had.

“I had always wanted to make a Latin jazz record. I’m a good jazz player and a fan of Edddie Palmieri. I love the career he has made linking salsa and latin jazz at the same time. I made the two albums, I presented them in JN Music Group, they liked them and they quickly told me we want to release them. Both will go on the market in February 2021 ”, said the artist.

The album featured the collaboration of Cuban-born pianist Chucho Valdés and saxophonist Ed Calle. For some, betting on new releases amid the global pandemic was a challenge. However, Rosado took it with good energy and believes that it is not impossible to give them the boost he wants.

“Who knows what happens. Sometimes you make an album at the best times and under the best circumstances and nothing happens. I am positive. I did these two projects in difficult times and look, I got them signed for me. So far I have managed to make the records and have the production company put them out… things that maybe under regular circumstances would not have achieved. We are going to think that this pandemic has come with the happiness that I have been able to make these two albums and that they are going to continue with the push they have been doing so far “, said the musician

Marlow has worked with the best of the industry. He created a song for Yolandita Monge (“Sentimiento Borinqueño”), he has participated in productions by Alejandra Guzmán, Ricky Martin, El Gran Combo, Elvis Crespo, the Puerto Rican Power orchestra, among others. He has also worked with Celia Cruz, Selena, Ricardo Montaner, Olga Tañón, and many more.

Marlow Rosado’s Biography

Marlow Rosado was born and raised in Cataño, in the central area of San Juan in Puerto Rico. Later, he moved to the state of Florida, where he trained in the musical field. He studied up to a master’s degree in jazz.

Rosado is very dear to the children who have known him. In fact, he taught in elementary schools, sharing his passion for music with new generations. His first big break came from being able to work alongside Desmond Child, an American producer and songwriter who has been associated with renowned bands like Aerosmith, Bon Jovi and Kiss. A big leap in his career!

He is the typical Latino who loves his country, and grew up surrounded by his origins. Salsa accompanied him throughout his life. Before he was 10 years old, he was given an electronic organ and it was at that moment that everything changed for him.

He has won two Grammys, an achievement that fills him with great pride.

“The Grammys are my before and after in my career. They have given me the right to say: Look, I am right. I have always had my mind outside of what is commercial, making the music that I want to do. The Grammys have given me the right to know that I was right… where my music is going”, he said.

In 2009, together with his orchestra La Riqueña, he recorded his first album known as “Salsalsa”. For Marlow, the team he had was of another level: “The best musicians.” Then, in 2012 came “Retro”, along with his first Grammy Award; “Salsanimal” in 2014; “Harlow Marlow, volume 1” in 2016; and “Feminomanía”.

Harlow Marlow, Vol. 1 mixed elegant style with modern elements and salsa brava. The album was a tribute to his friend Harlow.

“I have a very special respect and affection for Larry Harlow. I have known him for many years. I have worked with him many times. When he came to Miami to play, I put the orchestra together for him. I have an unforgettable memory when I played the Hommy Opera at Lincoln Center. Larry conducted and I played the piano. For me it was an honor.
