What the situation will be in New York in August 2021

What is happening in New York?

There are several reports in New York for the coming months in terms of salsa and Latin music in general. There are so many that we could not mention them all here, but we will summarize the most outstanding and interesting of the month. So make yourselves comfortable because we have many things to say.  

Salsa International Day Celebration 

Recently, it was announced that New York will host the First Salsa International Day Celebration, an event that has been announced by Carlos Velasquez from GrupoCKV and myself on 27 June of this year. This fabulous festivity will be broadcast through Canal America in an exclusive way and carried out on 14 August between 4 and 5 pm on New York time. 

In the words of Velasquez, this will be an event meant to unify and glorify all salsa lovers. He also mentions that for him and the rest of the team that makes this possible are proud to be able to share this great event with all viewers who are interested in the show that has been prepared for them.

Donation of the last jacket worn by Franklin Ruíz in one of his shows 

For me and for the rest of the Spaha Salsa Gallery, it is a great honor that Franklin Ruíz’s brother Víctor Rolando Negrón Ruiz, best known as Viti Ruíz, has donated the last jacket worn by the artist at Madison Square Garden before his unfortunate death due to liver cirrhosis that had afflicted him a while ago. With this special offer, we will always have a pleasant memory of El Papá de La Salsa, who has left a bottomless void after his departure. 

Viti Ruiz is a huge iconic figure like his brother Franklin, who made us be more honored to receive him in our facilities and meet him about the gift to the Salsa Museum and how much this priceless possession meant to him. What makes this jacket so special is that it was worn by the singer during a heartfelt tribute in which his name was chanted for more than 15 minutes at Times Square Garden, time that will remain forever in the memory of the musician until his last days and that of all his fans.

Tito Allen is more relevant than ever 

We all know the artistic career of Tito Allen for more than 60 years, whose songs hit speak for themselves. Despite so many decades, the Puerto Rican is still a very active man and wants everyone to know that he will return to the stage and will do it with a few surprises up his sleeve. 

He has announced that he will be part of the Salsa Festival, which will take place on 21 August from 8 pm. According to information recently published, the place chosen is the Stereo Garden in New York, which is a multi-use venue built in the 1940s under the name of Patchogue Roller Rink. One of the best characteristics of this place is the absence of inconvenient columns that can hinder the movement and view of the spectators, providing them with much more space in which they can move about. 

Additional to that, Tito will not be the only one performing that night, as the concert will count on the participation of Franklin Vasquez and Hector Tricoche. Those who wish to book their tickets may do so through Ticketmaster and they have a value of $40.

Johnny Rivera “Better known as El Noble de la Salsa in New York”

Johnny Rivera Born in Manhattan and raised in the Bronx, NY.

Better known as El Noble de la Salsa, with more than 40 years of artistic career, a descendant of Puerto Rican parents.

He began his artistic career in New York, thanks to the influence of his uncle Adalberto Santiago, he began to demonstrate a strong inclination towards music and a great desire to prosper as a singer and learn all genres of music and especially Salsa, he continued his studies to improve his technique in singing and in a short time as a singer and chorus singer, he joined his uncle Adalberto Santiago and once he had the backing.

JOHNNY showed his talent, recording in the album Noche caliente, Volume 2, the song “Terciopelo y piedra” with Meñique and Tito Allen.

He began his artistic career in New York, thanks to the influence of his uncle Adalberto Santiago, he began to show a strong inclination towards music.

In 1980 JOHNNY RIVERA, was presented with the opportunity to record with several great orchestras that put him in the spotlight of the Music Industry, including a youth orchestra, Grupo Fascinación.

He recorded three additional albums, later he also received the opportunity to join Conjunto Clasico, standing out as a lead singer, he recorded two albums with Conjunto Clasico before leaving for his solo career, he recorded his first album now for real in his debut as a soloist, he stayed between Puerto Rico and New York.

The songs “Necesito Una Amiga”, “Esa Chica Es Mia” and “Como Fui A Enamorarme de ti” were hits from that production and the salsa singer had already recorded his second album entitled Encuentro Casual.

The first single from this album, “Te Regalare”, became a hit upon its release.

In 1993, Johnny Rivera recorded his third album, Cuando Parara La Lluvia, which featured three hit singles, “Cuando Parara La Lluvia”, “Por Eso está conmigo” and “Voy a Conquistar Tu Amor”.

Cuando Parara La Lluvia earned platinum accolades shortly after its release and made an impact around the world.

Rivera made a name for himself at New York’s Madison Square Garden, during his tenure with the late Ralph Mercado’s RMM label, Johnny Rivera had the opportunity to join another of the most important music star conglomerates of all time, the RMM Salsa Stars or the also renowned Combination Perfecta, where along with salsa artist Ray Sepulveda he earned multiple Gold and Platinum Records for sales in the United States and Latin America, including the Caribbean for the worldwide hit titled “No vale la Pena”.

In 1994 Johnny received the Paoli Award for Newcomer of the Year and the Diplo Award for Best Album of the Year.

Johnny Rivera has also obtained first places in the Billboard charts and has performed in the most important stages of the world such as Madison Square Garden in New York and is one of the most recognized salsa artists worldwide who has traveled with his music and charisma to cities around the world such as Cali, Bogota, Medellin, Venezuela, Lima, Quito, Guayaquil, Panama City, Guadalajara, San Jose, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, London, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, among many others, always enjoying great acceptance and popularity in recent years.

Now Johnny Rivera, a salsa legend hopes to surpass the success of his past and present musical endeavors with a resume that boasts the accomplishments that only a man of his caliber and experience can show.

For this year 2021 El Noble de la Salsa launches his latest album titled “Romántico y Algo Mas”

Great career of New Yorker Arlene Gonzalez

How her career got started

The family is the fundamental pillar for every human being and decisive for the path of any individual will take in life. A great example of this is Arlene Gonzalez, whose home training has played a key role in the beginning and continuation of her career as a bilingual musician and composer. This New Yorker of Puerto Rican and Ecuadorian ancestry began making a name for herself once she left her homeland and moved to the south of Florida in search of new professional and personal opportunities. 

After moving to her new home, she started a brilliant musical career from the hand of performances and tours in which she always showed the innate talent which has accompanied her in each of her shows. One of her most important collaborations was done with the famous producer and Grammy winner Jon FX. 

One of the reasons why Arlene is best known in the music industry is her great talent as a composer, so she does not need the support or collaboration with anyone else at the time of writing all her works. This is what gave her the push he needed to create her own label Platinum G. Records, so she has not required the support of a record label which in the long run would only limit her as an artist and as a person.

This talented American of Latino descent has worked with a large amount of television networks with respect to promotion and presentation of shows that help the emergence of up-and-coming artists in many cities across the country. Likewise, his music is increasingly present in important radio stations as in the case of Wepa FM in Florida or 94.5 FM in New York. 

She has managed to tour in many countries throughout Latin America thanks to his efforts to achieve a prestigious place in the industry. His salsa song Vete became very successful in nightclubs throughout several cities in Panama and a large part of North America, where his music was welcomed with open arms. 

For this year, she will be throwing a tour of Jamaica on a cruise ship in which she will sing her entire repertoire and delight the present ones with hits like Boy toy, Quiero bailar, Illusion, Boriqua somos, and so on. It will be a great opportunity for the artist to improve its visibility with those who have not been able to enjoy her great talent every time she performs any of her incredible songs. 

At this point, she is writing new songs for her latest album, whose predominant genre will be salsa and main single will be the song Tendrán que respetar, which has been a creation of the talented composer José Luis Pagan, who has trusted in the talent of González to try rhythming and become a real piece of work. In addition, the single already has its own videoclip and arrangements made by the famous maestro Oscar Hernandez.   

In contrast to her career as a singer, the New Yorker is about to launch a line of lipstick, demonstrating that she is quite a very skilled entrepreneur in the cosmetics industry. 

This promising figure of music has given a lot to talk about from the beginning, and no mistake, that will continue to do so as long as she enjoyed sucess and delighted everyone with good music as usual.

What causes the birth of salsa in New York and other cities

Background

It is no secret that music has always been a vast source of social expressions that tell an infinite number of stories dating back to the time and focused on the awakening of the personal and collective conscience of the people at the time. This is exactly what has happened with salsa and Latin music in general from its origins. 

As is the case for almost all known musical genres, salsa was the result of a set of migration waves caused by the political, social and economic issues that were gestating in a large part of the Latin countries. These people saw in various cities across the U.S. the place they were looking for to start a new life far from the suffering of the past. This is how large Latino communities were growing in the country, New York being one of the cities with the highest number of these new residents.   

Although people from all over the continent immigrated to the United States, there is no denying that Puerto Ricans and Cubans started making an impact on their new home, at least in cultural terms. Cities that received these new citizens were already becoming too small for the large number of immigrants who would not stop arriving, which presented a challenge for the old and new inhabitants. 

A number of new arrivals were forced to live in inhumane conditions to find themselves in places which did not have minimum conditions of dignity to house human beings. This led many of them to live a life of squalor equal to the one from which they were fleeing, or even worse.   

This is how neighborhoods were starting to be born in New York City, which was gradually configured in small communities inhabited only by people of one or certain nationality. It was this mix of old and new culture that gave birth to new rhythms that were born on the streets and began to spread robustly. At that time, we were starting to enjoy the talent of Cheo Feliciano and historic boleros of Pedro Flores were becoming increasingly present in the rickety windows of Latin low-income neighborhoods.

This social situation coincided with the creation of the record label Fania Records from the hand of the legendary Johnny Pacheco and Jerry Masucci. The early work of the label attracted a great deal of attention due to its freshness and novelty in comparison with what was being done at the time. Fania All Stars, Bobby Valentín’s orchestra and a few other groups, not noticing it, began to start a trend to the sound of timbales and claves whose rhythm was increasingly fast and furious. 

The young people of the time were clamoring for music far from art academies and social circles which became more and more unattainable for them. Something that many would call music closer to the street and much more like them. The black population had ceased to be represented by much acclaimed jazz artists at the time and could feel its purest essence in boogaloo.   

For those who do not know, boogaloo can be defined as a genre of Latin origin resulting from the mixing of Afro-Cuban rhythms and American soul, which was already beginning to be sung in both English and Spanish. This last shows the widespread influence of the arrival of so many Latinos to the United States in such a short amount of time. 

This is what made the figures that would later emerge so famous. In addition to Pacheco and Valentin, names like Pete Rodriguez, Monguito, Ismael Miranda, and Ismael Rivera were also popularized. And of course, nor can we fail to mention the explosive duo formed by Héctor Lavoe and Willie Colón.

What the term salsa means 

After the emergence of the already mentioned artists, there came about a great confusion concerning the meaning of the term salsa, as that was the word chosen to refer to the music done by a growing group of singers in New York. This, of course, did not make Tito Puente and Machito content, who saw the pioneers of this new trend as intruders who came to take the place they had already earned by pluck and application. 

Some scholars of the subject have stated that the term salsa comes from a kind of like campaigning in which this rising genre was likened to the seasoning used in food to make it more appetizing. Others said that it was just a phrase that says échale salsa (salsa in Spanish can also refer to sauce used in the kitchen) used by various musicians for sudden changes in rhythm. Fania Records used this to make its artists famous and it worked as well as expected. 

During the 1970s, the genre hung over the youth of the time and the old school that took quite a lot to impress.

What part Cuba and the Cuban Revolution played in all this.

It is undeniable that Cuban music had a before and an after due to the Cuban Revolution. When Castro came to power, high tensions began to arise between the island and the United States, which caused the Caribbean country to be perceived as a threat by the media of the time. This made its cultural and artistic expressions to be no longer seen with good eyes. This led artists who were afraid of being censored to rename it as salsa and pass it off as Latin music. 

This salsa ended up by uniting an entire continent in a single voice, for it spoke of a shared culture and a common origin that not only stood for Cuba, but also for Latin America in full. This was what turned the genre into an identity movement for countries such as Puerto Rico, Colombia, Venezuela, and many more. There was a time all these nations were competing to be considered the official home of salsa. 

This brought about a countless number of historic concerts in which the Fania All Stars, other groups, and artists proved that the Fania got huge potential as a product. This was the exact same Cuban music with certain variations that never left the art world despite pressures to do so.

Raymundo “Ray” Barretto Pagan was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 29, 1929.

Son of Ramón Barretto and Dolores Pagán, born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico; he belongs to the generation of Puerto Ricans who grew up in New York and are known as “neoyoricans”: children of Puerto Ricans who did not know the Island.

His father leaves home and returns to Puerto Rico when Ray is barely six years old, leaving his mother, Doña Lola, alone to raise her children Ray, Ricardo and Cecilia. His childhood and part of his youth were spent between the streets of Spanish Harlem and the Bronx, listening to Latin music in the morning and jazz at night.

“My mother fought hard to keep us away from drugs and crime. She rented a room in the apartment to feed us. And as I recall, popular music was an escape for her from the reality of poverty and strengthened her spirit to keep fighting,” Ray recalled.

In 1946, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the army and was sent to Europe, where he curiously began his career as a jazz percussionist, performing officially at the Orlando Club GI, in Munich, Germany, in one of those jam sessions, a point of discovery for many great figures of music.

Regarding his performance in Germany, Ray comments: “That was an inspiration of the moment! There was an old banjo with old strings, I had listened to Chano Pozo through his records with Dizzy Gillespie, and I had that desire to play, to imitate Chano.

I took the banjo, went up on the stage and started to play by hitting the snare drum. Miracle the musicians didn’t throw me off the stage! But then they told me: ‘you have talent, you must go on and try to improve yourself’.

So when I returned to the United States, I bought my first drum and started looking for any place with live music to improve my technique by listening and watching how the musicians played, not on record, but live”.

The availability in English of this work, assists in the diffusion of Latin culture within the English speaking public.  This was made possible thanks to the rigorous research and literary skill of Colombian author Robert Tellez, as well as the linguistic precision of Puerto Rican translator Ronald Vazquez.

This year, 2021, marks fifteen years since Ray Barretto left the earthly congas and five years since Colombian journalist Téllez Moreno released Ray Barretto, Giant Force.

On April 29th of this year, on the occasion of Barretto’s 93rd birthday, the Colombian author presented the translation of the aforementioned work, published in collaboration with Be More by Bella Martínez.

Like the work originally written by Téllez Moreno in Spanish and published by some publishers in 2016, this English version by the Puerto Rican translator gathers in a chronological and rigorous way the musical work of the also known as “Manos Duras”.

The book highlights Barretto’s beginnings in jazz and his influential career in salsa, collecting 11 Grammy nominations.

Ronald masterfully translates into simple, readable English the same journalistic narrative that Téllez constructed using testimonies gathered from those closest to Barretto.

After Barretto’s death in February 2006, Annette “Brandy” Rivera and the friend of the musician who is the subject of the book, George Rivera, shared with the author their memories of various moments in Barretto’s career.

Ray Barretto, Giant Force, was a virtual activity that was transmitted from Casa Norberto in Plaza Las Americas.

The presentation was moderated by journalist and writer Jaime Torres Torres, the independent editor in charge of the translation project, Bella Martínez, translator Ronald Vázquez, music professor and researcher Elmer González, author of the prologue to Ray Barretto, Giant Force, and the author of the book, Robert Téllez.
