Stories in the key of salsa come “from the LP to your library”

From the pen of the novel writer Urayoán Enrique comes Relatos en clave de salsa, a collection of eleven stories, all inspired by the same erotic salsa that revolutionized the salsa music scene at least three decades ago.

The eleven songs that inspired the stories contained in the book that Urayoán recently built-in clear homage to salsa erotica are all undisputed hits.  The concept of this collection of short stories follows the line that the author calls: from the LP to your library.

Most of the musical themes contained here came in LP (Long Play) format, those vinyl records that compiled ten musical themes in one unit, known as an album. From that concept, Urayoán came up with the idea of making the conversion, deciding that the collection of stories would be one of eleven, including ten tracks -in this case stories- plus the well-remembered bonus track, for a total of eleven.

During the official launch and presentation of the book, which took place at the Teatro Renacimiento in Arroyo, Puerto Rico on September 18, 2021; young actor Bryan (Brayito) Lebrón and Suhey Moraima played the lead roles in an apt theatrical interpretation of the story entitled Esa chica es mía.  Broadcaster and DJ Eduardo Huertas Alicea moderated the event.

Puerto Rican writers Bella Martínez and Richard Rivera Cardona, editor of the literary work, were in charge of the question and answer segment, whose answers brought to light details about the construction of this text that, as previously stated, pays homage to erotic salsa.

The titles contained in this collection, whose inspiration came to Urayoán by way of the musical themes with which the stories in reference share the titles, are:  Ven, devórame otra vez, Insaciable, Desnúdate mujer, ¿Quién será ese ladrón, Esa chica es mía, Desayuno, Caricias prohibidas, Mi mundo, Quiero morir en tu piel, Lluvia and Tu prenda tendida.

Before reading each story, it is suggested to listen to the musical theme that inspires it. The book is so carefully constructed that each story has the credits associated with the theme song.  The credits include the title, the performer, the composer of the lyrics, the arranger responsible for the musical composition, the album that contains it, the record label that published it and the year in which the song was published.  As can be seen, the research was exhaustive and the writing comprehensive; which evidences the care and respect with which this work, which has also been called salsa in prose, was treated.

Urayoán contemplates with his usual shyness to follow this literary line in order to continue building stories that keep the salsa alive and in the minds of the readers. There remained on the shelf the restlessness to write about: Me acostumbré (interpretation by “Tártaro de la salsa”: Frankie Ruiz), Sí, te mentií (interpretation by Lalo Rodríguez), Aquel viejo motel (interpretation by David Pabón) and 5 noches (interpretation by Paquito Guzmán).

By popular demand, Urayoán could write stories inspired by boleros. If he is motivated to explore the bolero, I suggested he develop a story inspired by Deseo salvaje (Lalo Rodríguez’s rendition). In addition to the lyrics of that song, the value lies in the fact that it was also composed by Lalo Rodríguez. Lalo wrote Deseo salvaje when he was only fourteen years old, and two years later he recorded the vocal part for Eddie Palmieri’s orchestra when he was sixteen years old. The album that contains the song I suggested here, The Sun of Latin music was the first salsa album to win the Grammy for “Best Latin Recording”. Even more significant is that it was the first salsa album to be nominated for the highest music award given annually by the world’s leading society of music professionals, better known as the Recording Academy.

World Music Festival 2021 presents Arturo y su Azucaribe in concert on the last Tuesday of November. This band integrated into Swiss society but whose music is molded to their cultures of origin takes a tour of traditional Cuban melodies.

This orchestra founded in 2012 displays its talent during concerts with the Guaguancó, Son Cubano, and Boleros fusing them with the Salsa hits of the last two decades of important personalities such as Héctor Lavoe and Marc Anthony among many others.

Arturo y su Azucaribe released Llegó Mi Son, their first record production in January 2019, with unpublished compositions written by the band´s members with the production and direction of the bassist and conductor Arthur Furrer.

So, remember to stay in Zurich and dance to the rhythm of Salsa at this week-long festival.

Two Latin events that will infect you with Sabor y Son!

Abrázame is a Latin event that takes place every month and brings the most current Puerto Rican Salsa, New York On2 style, as well as the best of Cuban Salsa, Bachata, Cha-Cha, and other Afro-Caribbean rhythms.

In addition, Abrázame will have a sensual Bachata workshop and a representative show of the genre. The social dance will start at 10 PM with DJ Samy (Salsa Mix) and DJane Energía (Bachata / Kizomba)

The biosecurity system will be implemented by disinfection in all areas of the venue and there will be a constant tracking system due to the reduced space. David Morales “The Captain Of Salsa”

Erika Muñoz, official administrator of the portal “Se Armó la Rumba en México”, www.SalsaGoogle.com and International Salsa Magazine present the Puerto Rican David Morales.

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Son of a seamstress and a furniture upholsterer. He began his studies at the Federico Asenjo and Albert Einstein School in Barrio Obrero where he grew up.

He graduated from Juan Ponce de Leon High School in San Jose and then entered the University of Puerto Rico completing his Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, through a scholarship that ironically he won through an audition he performed in the UPR choir.

At the age of 11 he began working delivering newspapers and years later he worked selling household products. Since he was a child he had two great ambitions: to be a singer and to be an airline pilot. At the age of ten he was already singing the songs of the orchestras of the moment such as Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe, Ismael Miranda, Raphy Leavitt (RIP) and his Orquesta La Selecta, Roberto Roena and his Apollo Sound, Oscar D’León’s La Dimensión Latina and Oscar D’León’s La Dimensión Latina.

The first time he saw an orchestra perform in person was Orquesta Revolución 70, who sang at the Placita Barceló in Barrio Obrero and while singing their hit song Soy de Borinquén, David was fascinated by the music and discovered that his desire was to become a salsa singer someday. It was precise with Revolución 70 that David years later would be initiated into music as a singer.

She graduated from Juan Ponce de León High School in San José and then entered the University of Puerto Rico completing her Bachelor's degree in accounting, through a scholarship that she ironically earned through an audition she performed in the UPR choir.

Maestro Jimmy Urbina, director of Revolución 70 was preparing to record an album and it was in this way that Maestro Mario Ortiz (RIP) recommended him for the orchestra. After auditioning as a singer David joined the group and recorded an album where he sang 5 songs of the production along with singers Dino Guy and Angelo Pacheco.

During his artistic career, one of the orchestras that most captivated and inspired David was Raphy Leavitt’s Orquesta La Selecta.

With him, David had the opportunity to sing and from that moment on, the maestro became his mentor and they created a friendship that lasted forever.

In 1982 David had to give up music because he entered the military service where he achieved his dream of becoming a helicopter and airplane pilot. At the end of the 80’s he returned to Puerto Rico and returned to music, singing with the orchestras of Tommy Olivencia, Conjunto Chaney, Omar Alfanno, Manolo Lezcano, Aldo Mata, José Nogueras and Paquito Acosta. He was also a singer in the orchestras of Willie Rosario, Roberto Roena y Su Apollo Sound, Orquesta La Solución, and Orquesta Costa Brava, where he had the opportunity to record the production “A Pico y Pala”. During this same period the producer and arranger, maestro Carlos “Cuto” Soto baptizes David Morales as “El Piloto”.

David Morales as “El Piloto de la Salsa” (The Salsa Pilot), becoming known by that name within the salsa scene. David Morales had the opportunity to travel to many places around the world to sing with several famous orchestras within the genre.

He has also had the opportunity to sing as a guest with orchestras of the stature of El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, Oscar D’León, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, Tito Nieves, Don Perignon and La Corporación Latina, among others.

After the passage of Hurricane María, in September 2017 David was invited to participate in the recording “Entre Amigos in the recording of “Entre Amigos Después de la Tempestad” with Luis González El Tsunami de la Salsa and Nino Segarra; production that took place together with several singers of trajectory in Nino’s recording studio.

Recently he has just recorded his first album as a soloist, under the direction of pianist, composer, and arranger, maestro Pedro Bermudez, who was David’s partner for many years in Willie Rosario’s orchestra. This production is quite varied, as it includes classic salsa, romantic salsa, boleros, and Cuban salsa, respecting the traditions of the masters and founding fathers of the salsa genre.

All the songs are oriented to the dancer.

There are compositions by Pedro Bermúdez, Ángel Santos, Peter Velázquez, Pablo Milanés, Gloria González, Jimmy Sánchez and Osvaldo Noel, Yturvides Vilchez and Michel Puche.

The arrangers are Pedro Bermúdez, Tommy Villariny, Ramón Sánchez, Carlos Torres,

Tito Rivera and Cuto Soto. It also features the participation of José Alberto “El Canario” as a guest singer in the song titled “El Piloto y El Canario”.

Carine and Rafael, 8th World Salsa Champions

Brazil, the country known for its tropics and its excellence in dancing Samba worldwide, especially dancing in popular festivals and its carnival every year, but that’s not all, at the level of salsa rhythm we have 2 important representatives that we were able to interview in This month, which are: Carine Morais and Rafael Barros, are great salsa dancers who represented their country in a great variety of dance competitions, where they became the Salsa champions 8 times in a row, these competitions are the that they conquered:

Who was born in Fortaleza, Ceará, Fortaleza, Brazil; He tells us that he liked dancing from a very young age and practiced thanks to family festivals and from the age of 14 he decided to enter a dance school to improve himself and have more contact with this art, resulting in Forró already teaching at 18 , Samba, Bolero and other rhythms. His first contact with salsa took place in 2004 through a study group: the Salseira Rebellion.

Starting in 2005, she made her first trip to the São Paulo capital with the group she was part of to study and perform in one of the most important dance congresses in the country at that time: the Latin Culture Week. Two years later, he moved to São Paulo to join Cia. Phoenix and, at age 21, was third at the Salsa Open Brasil.

She was also born in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil, dance was part of her life since she was a child since she enjoyed it as if it were a game, at the age of 13 she began her ballroom dance studies and a year later already She was teaching as a teacher, and in 2003 she traveled with a dance group to Spain where she participated in two seasons of a Brazilian music show.However, her first direct contact with Salsa took place in a study group in Ceará and had a Paulo Burracha as his first partner; As time passed, he acquired quality, ingenuity and dedication which began to attract attention and from 2006 Carine traveled to Rio de Janeiro by invitation to improve her samba de gafieira and funkeado, but she always continued studying and training in salsa and in 2007 she won with his partner Paulo Burracha the Brazilian stage of the Salsa Open.

In September 2008, she began her victorious partnership with Rafael Barros and together they won 8 world titles, in addition to becoming one of the greatest references in world dance, Carine Morais, along with her new partner Rafael Barros, who have already traveled to more than 35 countries with the aim of teaching and acting. Not to mention the various invitations to be a judge at the main world dance championships and the various participations in television programs.

For almost 12 years of collaboration between Rafael and Carine, they emphasize that it is not only about perfecting the technique and musicality in dance but also its harmony. And they did not remain in being professional dancers, but they are also professors and choreographers in demand in various congresses nationally and internationally, reaching more than 300 participations in congresses distributed in more than 35 countries, among them are: Argentina, Italy, Guatemala, Uruguay , Chile, Australia, Portugal, Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Suriname, Puerto Rico, Canada, Turkey, India, Panama, Bolivia, Costa Rica, China, Canary Islands, Thailand, Spain, Lebanon, Ecuador, Bulgaria, Austria, Singapore, the United States, Germany, France, Greece and Switzerland; And these not only stay there, it is worth mentioning that they have had numerous participations in television programs, both entertainment and journalistic, in Brazilian and international stations, among them: TV Globo Fantástico, Encontro com Fátima Bernardes, Globo Esporte, Programa do Jô , Rede Record, among other outstanding appearances.

For almost five years they maintained the Carine & Rafael Dance School unit in São Paulo, Brazil, which ended its activities in 2020 due to the Covid 19 pandemic, but since April 2021 they began to give online and face-to-face classes in compliance with the measures of security. Thanks to this great feat that this dance couple did, they have placed Brazil at the center of the World Salsa, making Brazil a very important country regarding ballroom dancing.

Lore Pereira is one of the young interpreters with the greatest International projection

In this delivery, graces our salsa column, one of the young interpreters of greater international projection and who currently places very high the name of Venezuela on the world stages and record level, we refer to Edgliz Lorena Pereira Mendez, known in the artistic environment as “Lore Pereira”, born in Barquisimeto, Lara state in 1985, daughter of outstanding musicians in the national territory, as they are: Édgar Pereira and Virginia Méndez, former members of the Sonero Clásico del Caribe and other recognized orchestras.

Lore, since she was a child, showed her musical abilities and began her studies at the Vicente Emilio Sojo Conservatory in 1998.

In this institution she was part of the Youth Choir of Children Singers of the Lara State Symphony Orchestra. In the following years he participated in several musical activities in the city, such as: Voz Javeriana (1999), Member of the Choir of the Universidad Centro Occidental Lisandro Alvarado where he served as head of contraltos string (2001).

In 2002 he was part of the Lara State Lyrical Singing Chair “Aquiles Machado” under the direction of the renowned singer Angelo D’addona, where he made great and significant presentations such as: cycles of Lyrical Galas with a repertoire of sacred music and great works of Latin American music for the prelude to the first season of opera in the San Miguel Chapel of the Museum of Barquisimeto, Magdalena Seijas Auditorium, Santa Rosa Chapel, Auditorium of the Italian-Venezuelan Club, among others.

Subsequently, in 2003, she became part of the stable cast of the Compañía de Ópera de Occidente (Opera Company of the West), thanks to the chair of Lyric Singing and the Symphonic Choir of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Lara (Symphonic Orchestra of Lara).

This year, she is preparing for the staging of the trilogy “Love, Passion and Death” as part of the cast of singers for the acts of 3 plays “Rusticana, Madame Butterfly and La Boheme” and the play “Los Martirios de Colón” by Venezuelan composer Federico Ruiz, These works were presented in various stages of the city as the dance and ballet academy Taormina Guevara, Teatro Juares, Teatro Alirio Diaz de Carora, Auditorium of the Italo-Venezuelan Club and the Ateneo de Boconó.

At the end of this year, he lined up to pay homage to Maestro José Antonio Abreu in a concert with the Lara State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Tarsicio Barreto at the José Félix Ribas Hall of the Teresa Carreño Cultural Complex.

He participated in Santus Group concerts and in Boleros Nights and something else at the Sala Alternativa Juan Carmona of the newspaper El Impulso.

In this institution he was part of the Youth Choir of Children Singers of the Lara State Symphony Orchestra. In 2005 she worked hand in hand with music teacher Behomar Rojas, who played an important role in her training and incorporated her in various musical activities in her hometown and the Venezuelan national territory, such as festivals, concerts of sacred music and stylized Venezuelan music.

In the following years, he participates in record productions of Venezuelan folk and alternative music, as well as in regional and national festivals.

It is worth mentioning the most important one held in 2008, La Voz de Oro y de la Canción Inédita de Venezuela, where he had the opportunity to share workshops and rehearsals with great singers of the Venezuelan national territory.

In the same way, he is part of several popular Venezuelan groups as a vocalist and backing vocalist, as well as participating in productions with renowned artists at present.

In 2010 he joins his performance with Venezuelan singer-songwriter Ignacio Izcaray, making several recordings, live concerts in Venezuela, such as: May 2011 (Teatro Juares) Barquisimeto, Ateneo de Caracas and Sala Corpbanca), October 2011 (Ambrosio Oropeza auditorium of the Ucla), January 2013 (concert at the Country Club of Barquisimeto, Teatro Alirio Diaz de Carora), also participated in recordings of important recordings as vocal support of the singer-songwriter.

The recognition of her vocal and artistic talent has been overwhelming, both by her colleagues, spectators and institutions.

In 2015, Lore Pereira received the Mara de Oro de Venezuela award as “Best New Artist of the Year”.

Lore, for Salsa Escrita, the Salsera Column of Barquisimeto, International Salsa Magazine / www.SalsaGoogle.com we are proud to have you as a special guest and we would like you to tell us about your incursions into Latin music.

Well, Professor Carlos, I can tell you that I have lent my voice to important musical projects, being the only voice of the experimental group “Primigenio” and of several songs of “La Charangoza All Star”.

I am frequently called as a soloist of the Big Band “Raíces Orchestra”, led by the famous musician, saxophonist and arranger Pablo Gil.

And as for other musical genres, what can you tell us about them? As a vocalist, I have sung with important exponents of Venezuelan and Latin American music.

During these last years my voice has joined the show of great artists such as Marc Anthony, Natalia Jimenez, Marco Antonio Solis and Alejandro Fernandez on the stage of the Billboard Awards. Likewise, I repeated this experience in 2016 and 2017 with singers Luis Enrique, Farruco and Miguel Bosé, in Premios Tu Mundo.

As for recent productions, what do you have for us, Lore? I have been promoting my album “Inténtalo” where I share my talent alongside figures such as Luis Fernando Borjas, Irving Manuel, Marcial Istúriz, Chipi Chacón, Christian Delgado, Franco Lemus; all under the musical production of Jhosir Córdova.

Excellent Lore, recently the new version of the song “Callejón”, which was recorded some time ago by Arabella, was launched on the digital platforms, but we have been able to appreciate that your voice and that of Virginia Méndez, your mother, shows a lot of versatility with export quality.

Thank you Carlos for your appreciation, indeed this is a work that we are promoting, entitled “Callejón” with authorship of Catalino “Tite” Curet Alonso, arrangements by Jhosir Córdova, chorus by Andrés Brito, Gerardo “Pachanga” Araujo and my father, Édgar Pereira, on piano Johánn Morales, bass Daniel Barón, trumpets Luis “Papo” Márquez, trombones Jhosir Córdova, timbales Juan Pablo Romero, tumbadoras, bongo and bell Yomar “Caballo” Méndez, mix Daniel Barón, master Maikol Lugo, musical production and videography Jhosir Córdova and I hope everyone likes it, being able to appreciate it in my social networks or on youtube.
