Role of the Triangle Trade in the birth of Cuban rumba

What Cuban rumba is

As we all know, Latin music is a very diverse mix of a series of rhythms and musical styles from all over the world. What we know today as Latin music was the result of a whole concoction of historical facts that must come first in any story that seeks to explain the origins of any Latin rhythm that wants to be studied.

A good example of this that we have just said is the Cuban rumba, which is part of a set of cultural concepts that can be found in many parts of the world. There are certain musical rhythms that have allowed us to see that some seemingly alien places have made us discover each and every one of the common points they have, both historically and culturally.

How Cuban rumba starts

Cuban rumba and the Triangle Trade
Some people dancing rumba and and playing drums

One of the most important historical events that marked the birth of the Cuban rumba was the triangular trade carried out between Africa, America and Europe. This fact was the emergence of a large number of musical genres that were resulting from the mixture of rhythms and styles from all the aforementioned continents.

After the Discovery of America, Europe saw in the New World a useful territory for many of the economic activities that were not possible in their respective countries. In the case of labor, many African chiefdoms offered for sale to part of their inhabitants, something that was seen with very good eyes by the powerful Europeans of the time. This is how what historically would be known as triangular trade began.

This activity consisted of sending low-quality materials to be exchanged by African slaves to work with African and American resources in terrible living conditions. Once in America, some African ethnic groups were in charge of introducing the rumba in the Antilles, although the origins of the groups that brought these rhythms continue to be controversial among many scholars of the subject.

Although the slaves worked very hard during the day, they continued to practice their traditional rituals and rites at night. These practices were entirely based on their traditional music and religious customs to stay united with their Mother Earth despite the remoteness and the circumstances. Over time, these rites and percussion instruments were banned, so the new inhabitants of America had to adapt to the instruments allowed by the Spanish Crown. This made these sounds unknown to the Africans together with their forbidden dances in this land were merging until resulting in what we know today as rumba.

Rumba today

The characteristics of the rumba vary enormously from one place to another, since there are many variations and changes from one continent to another. In Africa, many see this genre as similar to zouk or benga, while Europeans refer to it as flamenco or Catalan rumba. There have been many artists who have taken on the task of making this genre their own and making it evolve to unsuspected levels to make it what it is today.

Today, we can appreciate a good number of subgenres that have their origin in the same parrones rhythms from which rumba derives in its different versions.

Camilo and El Alfa release “Bebé”, a bachata song

Listen to BEBÉ the new song from Camilo and El Alfa

The Colombian singer Camilo, winner of a Latin Grammy in this year’s ceremony, joined forces with the Dominican El Alfa to surprise everybody with a bachata full of feelings.

El Alfa is a Dominican rapper that, with lots of professionalism, joined him in this adventure. Camilo has triumphed in the musical industry, and has left more than one surprised with this song in the bachata genre, after all it’s his first experience with it.

My approach to music is always from the illusion, from what my heart asked me, and in this moment it wants to dance pegaito (close)”, expressed Camilo. “It’s a tribute to Dominican Republic, a country that I love with all my heart”, he added.

Colombia and Dominican Republic reunite with this song.

Within hours of its release, the song has more than four million views on YouTube, and keeps rising. Camilo looked very pleased with the final result and commented on YouTube:

ALL THE TRIBE DANCING PEGAITO (CLOSE)!!!! Thanks Alfa, you are an incredible human being, very unique! Colombia and Dominican Republic dancing together!!!”; he expressed.

Beside, he announced the release through his Instagram profile:

BEBÉ is released with @elalfaeljefe. This is going to be the soundtrack of my end of the year holidays!!! LET’S DANCE!!! Cheers. THE TRIBEEEE”, he said. The post was ended with emojis of the Colombian and Dominican flags.

Emanuel Herrera Batista, better known as El Alfa also took advantage of his social media profiles to share BEBÉ.

I thought that my first bachata would be with “THE KING” Romero Santos!! But it was my turn to work with the most worldwide mentioned artist, thanks @camilo for this chance! I have so much respect and affection for him”, El Alfa commented with two pictures together with the Colombian singer.

The music video was filmed in Samaná, a seaside city from Dominican Republic, and it was directed by Eva Luna, Camilo’s wife. It shows images from different parts of the island, and it’s focused on a couple’s love, and reflects couples dancing to the song rhythm. The production is under Sony Music Label.

Camilo is very excited about this song and working with El Alfa

It’s the first time that both artists share melodies, and they have been very pleased with the experience, and the final result. In fact, on a recent interview Camilo has given some words about the collaboration:

We met at an award show. I’ve always shown a curiosity for his identity. I think that he is a unique human being and I celebrate that identity, and the honesty above all. I celebrate his honesty in what he does, without asking anybody, without asking permission. He follows his hearts and wrote the songs that it dictates, for me that is something worthy to learn from him. It’s a tribute to the Dominican sound which is a second home for me, because it’s my parents’ home where they live, and each time I visit it, I fall in love more with a country that touches the heart from the first day that you land. I feel that I’m going to have the opportunity to enter the houses of many families with this song”, he commented to Diario Libre.

Could be the beginning of a new chapter for the Colombian singer’s career? Let’s wait and see!

Rueda de Salsa Casino – Vzla

Venezuela land of the “Rueda de Salsa Casino”

Venezuela could be known as the country with the largest number of Cuban-style Salsa Schools (the so-called Salsa Casino) in the world.
In its territorial division, more than 18 states of the country register a hundred schools dedicated to the teaching of the “Rueda de Salsa Casino” as an elementary basis for the diffusion of dance. Fashion came to us in the 90s and to date it has been maintained, having a huge boom in children, youth and adults, some by training, others by distraction, registering to date more than 160 formal academies established throughout the world. national territory, for this element, could be counted more than three thousand people dedicated to this discipline.

The development of the Casino has reached a very professional level, to its credit Venezuela has high-level dancers, some who have managed to bring to this area of the Caribbean prizes from other latitudes, not in a round but in pairs and soloists, the first obtained in 2007 by Ana de la Torre and Leonel Villarreal at the Miami Rueda Congress in 2007 as a couple, in 2009 by Nathaly Navarro and José Manuel Pérez from 1st place as a couple and 1st in the GandPrix of the winners in Primavera Salsa Open in Wroclaw – Poland where Sandra Batista and José Castro also obtained the 2nd place, that is to say Creole sweep, closing in 2014 with the 2nd place obtained by Raimond Madrid in the Columbia competition and the 4th place of María Alejandra and Arturo Reyes in They are Cuban, both from the Guaguancó Festival in Barcelona.

Practicing Salsa Casino

On May 15, 2016, a national Casino Rueda proposal was carried out, in which 16 states were able to participate, including the Capital District, Miranda, Aragua, Anzoátegui, Nueva Esparta, Lara, among others. We can highlight the best participation in the Carabobo state, achieving a national record of 1480 dancers with only 23 academies or schools in the state, among which stand out, Saoco Latino, Ashe roots and culture, Kimbara, Es Latino, passion and rhythm among others, unofficial record for record, but boy, how intimidating.

In the same order, there are already formal institutions that join forces to make improvements in the cooperative work of schools in Venezuela, there have already been about 6 associations or unions formed in some states of the country, this is the case of the newly born Federation Venezolana de Salsa Casino FEVESALCA, an entity that among its projects seeks to project the work of the Venezuelan Casino Wheel to the whole world, an example of them is one of the many articles that we will be reading about this great project.

Venezuelans are going for more and for 2017 they have prepared something very big, in November they were for the Guinness Record attempt for the longest Casino Wheel in the world, they have relied on their record of the largest and longest cable car to back this attempt, soon the state of Mérida could register a second Guinness, we will be closely monitoring this event, for the date the organizing academy could not be contacted, you are invited to be part of this attempt, do not stop writing to josemanuelperezchavez @ gmail .com and we will keep you informed.

Meet Gerardo Osvaldo Russo

Meet Gerardo Osvaldo Russo, director of the Salsa y Sentimiento Academy and organizer of the San Clemente Salsa Congress

Gerardo Osvaldo Russo was born on July 3, 1984, lives in a small town called San Clemente Del Tuyú, Argentina; He mentions his tastes for salsa and Latin rhythms and tells us that in 2005 he began to dance and listen to salsa and from that moment his taste and passion began, then he went on to dance other Caribbean rhythms. As of 2009 I have been teaching Caribbean Rhythms in the “SAOCO” studio, which is one of the best places to train in your country, for that I had to travel every week since it is 300 kilometers away from where I lived. I made an important decision which was to dedicate myself completely to teaching and then in the future to be able to create new projects that I already had in mind.

He mentions that the city where he lives had no way of training, since there were few resources and he could not do everything he had in mind, and his motivation was to grow personally as a teacher and dancer and thus be able to put all the knowledge he was acquiring. to the people who went to his classes.

For the year 2008 he began to teach at the beginning as a hobby for a year and a half until he made the decision to work 100% in his profession; Therefore, today it has its own Dance Academy called “Academia Salsa y Sentimiento” which was inaugurated in 2012 where he is currently coordinator and teacher; He has also been in charge of organizing the “San Clemente Salsa Congress” for about 3 years and for his institution he holds Salsa, Bachata and other Caribbean rhythms every year, these include seminars and trainings with teachers of high quality and experience.

San Clemente Salsa Congress 2020 Online
San Clemente Salsa Congress 2020 Online with John Moon

The reason that allowed the inauguration of the “Academia Salsa y Sentimiento” was basically that there was a need in the people not only of their city, but also of the neighboring cities of Puerto de la Costa, which is the region to which San Clemente del Tuyú and thus had the opportunity to learn to dance, express himself, find a place of liberation and belonging and also be able to meet people and socialize; For this reason, it is known for being the first dance academy registered in the entire region, feeling very proud of its work team and of itself. In a few words, they mention that their goal has always been for people to identify with the activities they do, find a place where they can learn and have fun, as well as recharge. Students entering this academy may do so without any experience or knowledge of the rhythm they wish to practice. For this year 2020 they will inaugurate their official website to have more information and not only information through their Facebook account.

In the academy you start from scratch but people who already have knowledge can also come because we have several levels. We work with people from 3 years onwards.

The biggest goal to be achieved was to create an International Salsa Congress where they proposed to bring their students to compete; and in 2016 they were able to do it with the reggaeton group with professor “Maximiliano Laplaca” reaching the finals of one of the most important competitions in Argentina and South America called “Argentine Aerobic and Dance Tournament” (TAAD).

For this year, together with other companies in the city, they are working to provide benefits to their students and not only have the possibility of learning and having fun, but they can also access discounts and benefits in stores in San Clemente. There is also a project for a few years from now, and that is to be able to train teachers to leave our Academy.

At the end he gives us a message for both students and future learners

“My message is as a teacher but fundamentally as a human being is that they do not stop going in search of their dreams, as long as they work hard with responsibility, passion and respect for things can be achieved. To also tell anyone who wants to come to the Salsa y Sentimiento Academy, they will find a place not only where they can learn to dance and train, but also a human group of contention, a place where they can freely express and bring out everything they carry inside. Adults and children who are united by the passion for dancing. Teachers who love what they do and want to pass it on to new generations. Always open to the possibility of listening to anyone who has new ideas to build a better Academy Salsa y Sentimiento every year ”

That’s how the Latin Grammys were

The 21st edition of the Latin Grammy

As expected, due to the global pandemic situation that hit us this year, the awarding of the 21st edition of the Latin Grammy was held online. In this way, neither the public nor the red carpet had participation this year. Some creatives recreated them in their homes and took the opportunity to take their respective photography.

The gala was held in the city of Miami with headquarters in other cities in Latin America. Several of the artists’ participations were also carried out under this modality.

The musical presentations were opened by the J Balvin show, one of the great favorites of the night. Who also broke a Guinness record for more nominations, surpassing the title obtained by Calle 13 in 2011. To receive his gramophone, he was dressed in black and then appeared in white. He interpreted the song “Rojo” and dedicated it to those who have had to fight against the COVID-19 virus. Balvin has recognized that this situation has affected him seriously and he has been immersed in depressive pictures.

“My heart is crying,” Balvin commented.

To the surprise of many, his heart actually turned the color of blood. His suit was dyed through some internal mechanism but leaving a large red stain on Balvin’s suit. Really, it seemed like his chest was bleeding incessantly.

J Balvin bled in the stage of the Latin Grammys

“Music humanizes us” was the theme of this year’s meeting. With the singer’s presentation, many were stunned and very sensitive. What did you think of his form of expression?
Natalia Jiménez paid tribute to Julio Iglesias, while the great Hector Lavoe also received recognition. Ricardo Montaner, Ivy Queen and Rauw Alejandro led the tribute.

Jesús Navarro, Ricardo Montaner, Victor Manuelle, Ivy Queen and Rauw Alejandro gave life to the song ‘El Cantante”’ in homage to Héctor Lavoe. Each of the interpreters, from their respective rhythms, created a perfect harmony and joined in a very emotional show. They quickly went viral and comments on social media grew by leaps and bounds. The spectators were pleased by a presentation that moved fibers.

Winners of the night

Natalia Lafourcade, Alejandro Sanz, René Residente, Mike Bahía, Ricky Martín, Caminlo, Rosalía, Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Ozuna, Carlos Vives, Grupo Niche, Eddy Herrera and Daniel Santacruz were the winners of the night. The winners’ social networks were filled with videos of celebration and appreciation. A different night but full of many emotions!

In the Mejor Canción Tropical category, singer-songwriter Carlos Vives shone with his song “Canción para Rubén Blades”, in which Blades participated as a composer. Vives was excited, he did not hesitate to thank Rubén Blades for his support.
“This award with Rubén, congratulations to all the nominees, all the participants, Kany a very big kiss, thank you Sony, thank my entire team, our producers, the artists, Andrés Leal, thank you,” he said in the middle of happiness.

In his social networks he also wanted to dedicate his award to La Academia, his country, his people, each of his followers, his wife and his entire production team. He was also shown celebrating from home, together with family and friends.

In the Mejor Álbum de Salsa category, Grupo Niche shone. Album 40 is a tribute to the group’s musical trajectory. It is the first Latin Grammy that Colombian salseros receive, after having been nominated twice, in 2001 and in 2016.

“We have won the @LatinGRAMMYs for best salsa album for ’40’ our most recent musical production. With great emotion we say to you: Salseros and Nichistas of the world, infinite Thanks! Long live Latin music, salsa, long live the teacher # JairoVarela and long live Colombia!”, They expressed on their Twitter account.

The winning album was recorded for almost a year in studios in Miami, Cali and Puerto Rico. They wanted to maintain the musical guidelines of Jairo Varela and thus remember his roots, without losing his essence.

As Mejor álbum de Merengue/Bachata we have two winners, two Dominicans. A historical event that both celebrate with great fury. Eddy Herrera and Daniel Santacruz were the lucky ones. They tied in one of the closest categories!

Two Dominican Winners
Both Dominicans won the Latin Grammy in the same category

Eddy Herrera has a long history in the genre, known as “El Galán del Merengue”. The followers of his career also celebrated this achievement, being the singer’s first Latin Grammy. “Eddy Herrera Ahora” contains some of his most recent songs.

“It is an immense joy that I also want to share with all my followers and lovers of my performances. Thank you for supporting me throughout these years where you have been faithful to my musical productions ”, he expressed.

The Dominican did not hide his happiness and dedicated himself to thanking those who have supported him during so many years of journey.

“I am extremely grateful to the entire production team, as well as my fans, who are always the impetus to keep going. To achieve this magnificent product, we had, as in other opportunities, the dedication of one hundred percent of our great team, who gave themselves with the charisma, vocation and professionalism of always, an essential symbol of our artistic productions ”, said Eddy Herrera.

For his part, Daniel Santacruz will fondly remember the day that “Larimar” made him the recipient of his first Academy Award. After several nominations, his long-awaited moment finally arrived. In fact, his brother Manny Cruz was also among the nominees.

Even though he was born in the United States, he is of Dominican descent and grew up on its streets. He learned about its culture, its influences and is very proud of its roots.
“Grateful to God, to the Recording Academy and to all those responsible for participating in this important production that represents the sacrifice of many years of career and effort,” expressed the artist.

Santacruz was also part of the singers who entertained the meeting. He appeared from Boca Chica, Dominican Republic to the rhythm of “Larimar”, the promotional song for his album.
The young Dominican posted a video on his Instagram account where he is very happy. He thanked his family, wife, mother and his brother Manny Cruz. To its engineers, musicians, fans and manager. As well as his country, the people who listen and dance bachata, merengue and all his followers. Long live the Dominican Republic!

The event was one of total innovation and, surely, it will become a starting point for other awards. Of course, the dedication and effort on the part of the organization cannot be denied; as well as the artists involved, all left their hearts on stage and showed that better times are to come. So be it!
