Puerto Rican singer Eduardo Herrera presents us with his new album “Libre” which will have 10 songs, one of them has the same title as the album, which aroused our curiosity. He mentions that his song “Libre” deals with a false love that destroys and manipulates at his convenience, his process of liberation from all that is bad or toxic in that love and, above all, the search for a force to have the courage to face everything and so on. being able to value yourself as a person and being able to look at yourself in the mirror.

Eduardo Herrera tells us that “it is not just a song, it is a way to get out of a prison, of the emotional and physical abuse that you can receive from a person who supposedly loves you… for me it has a lot of meaning, I sing it with great emotion because I lived it I got over it and now I’m free.”

The origin of the album was thanks not only to the singer but also to the good musicians who accompanied him, designed and finished him, among them the arrangers Richard Marcell (piano and bass) and Adán Pérez (piano), Tito de Gracia on percussion, Juan Carlos Cardona (Juako) with Trombones, Jesús Alonzo with Trumpet, Ángel Torres with Baritone.

Eduardo Herrera says that since he was a child he has sung in different choirs as he mentioned in the previous report, but from the age of 11 he fell in love with tropical music thanks to Jerry Rivera with the song “Casi un Hechizo” becoming addicted or passionate about the sound of the trumpets the congas and the romantic songs. After the separation of his partner, he began to write his own songs, and later he met a first-class musician named Adán Pérez, a great pianist and arranger; together they met to write and create the current themes of the discography.

He (Eduardo Herrera) also told us that he was in a choir called the Housing Authority Youth Choir, where he had many pleasant experiences and the opportunity to sing at Radio City Music Hall with the British Rock Symphony. In 2016 he produced an album of sacred music and had the honor of meeting Richard Marcell, winner of several Grammys as an arranger and musician, in that production he made 5 excellent songs.

The discography “Libre” has themes that speak of pain, love and the hope of a new beginning for the artist, that is, it is a production with a great variety of lyrics, he confesses that each song is its own story, it has its own identity and hopes that the salsa audience enjoys his work to the fullest since he left his whole being in that production.

Born on July 8 in the city of Bogotá, Colombia. Who since he was a child had an inclination for music, especially for singing, inheriting this artistic vein from his father. Charlie Cardona in his childhood sang with his brothers, at family gatherings, later with groups of friends and later he came to the stage with different musical groups in renowned night spots in the Colombian capital.

The opportunity to start his professional career was presented to him the same night he received his bachelor’s degree when he made his debut with LA MÁXIMA DE MAÑUNGO, an outstanding orchestra in Colombian folk music that he joined for two years, hence his taste for this genre.

In 1987 he began his studies of Solfeggio and Singing at the National University of Colombia, shortly after he met a group of musicians with whom he began in the salsa environment and through them he had contact with the producer and percussionist Willie Salcedo who is the one who takes for the first time to the recording studios where he begins singing jingles and choirs for different groups.

Year later, Charlie Cardona recorded with the tropical group FUERZA CARIBE, the song TE QUIERO under the production of the Ramírez brothers, being the beginning of a great list of successes in the voice of this great interpreter.

In 1989 with LOS ALFA 8 he recorded the songs TU Y YO and AL ROJO VIVO, songs that were his first hits in the Salsa genre, which became very popular on radio in Latin America and the United States.

In September 1990, he was called by Jairo Varela, director of GRUPO NICHE, to be part of the most important salsa institution in Colombia. For Charlie Cardona, it was his great trial by fire; He leaves his beloved Bogotá and settles definitively in Cali. Cardona assumes responsibility for a repertoire full of successes that in less than a month lead him to debut in the framework of the National Beauty Reign, a concert that is televised live throughout Colombia and they are the witnesses of the launch of the new star of the Colombian sauce.

In 1993 he recorded the songs DUELE MÁS, LAS TRES SON CARIBE and UN ALTO EN EL CAMINO, the theme and title of the album for which they received the award for Best Tropical/Salsa Group of the year at the Premios lo Nuestro de la Música Latina.

Charlie Cardona, with his voice and style, reflected his artistic acumen in five records over six years at the head of GRUPO NICHE until July 1996, the date when he retired from this institution to make his dream come true, to start his career as a soloist. In May 1997 he signs with the WEA Latina label and it is the beginning of his solo career, his first album, made in New York City under the direction of the outstanding musician and producer Sergio George.

El Amor Todo Lo Poder is the title of his second production as a soloist, which was made in 1999 in the city of Miami, where he presents us with a more mature Artist interpreting excellent songs, among which stand out PARA OLVIDARLA, TONTO CORAZÓN, I LOVE YOU SO MUCH and I ASK YOU FOR PEACE, the latter dedicated to his Colombian land.

In the same year he is nominated in the category of Revelation Artist of the Year at the Lo Nuestro Awards for Latin Music. In 2008, he released his third musical production Para Ser Feliz, the first under the NL Entertainment label, where he presents nine songs dedicated to love, family and God, including the hits LA MUJER DE MI VIDA and YOUR HANDS / CARPINTERO DEL LOVE.

From this musical history it can be concluded without a doubt that Cardona is a Colombian artist with international recognition, who remains present in several generations of different countries of the world with great acceptance, recognition and remembrance, with a large discography full of successes. Charlie studied Advertising and Marketing at the Central University of Bogotá, although it was a great effort to fulfill these two great commitments, he recognizes that the two careers complement each other and enrich his professional life.

In addition to being a great singer, this incredible artist is an excellent communicator; In 1999, he presented the program THANK YOU TO GOD SALSA for two years, on Radio Caracol’s Tropicana Estéreo station in the city of Cali, achieving first place in all of southwestern Colombia.

Recently, “Celebrando” whose name also titles the album, was the first single released by the group in November 2017 on all digital platforms and radio stations worldwide, and which last February managed to reach # 1 on the DJs chart.

The theme “Celebrando” has the participation of the Salsero Puerto Rican singer, Tito Nieves and the composition of the Venezuelan Angelito Vallenilla. The musical performance was in charge of the excellent Latin American musicians:

In order to rescue the golden age of Salsa in the 70s, 80s and 90s, the Orchestra Rumberos del Callejón was created with a total of 13 members at the beginning, currently, they are 12 members. Their great musical proposal was captured in their first record production titled “De la Nada” (2008) under the label Callejón Música. This album is composed of 11 songs, including: Aquí Se Puede, Pa ‘Lante Otra Vez, Chechere Guma by Justi Barreto, among many others.

Virgilio Martí was an excellent rumbero and composer of the classic “Cuba Linda” where he was vocalist and percussionist in Grupo Folklorico Experimental Newyorkino

Virgilio Martí, born in 1919 in Havana, Cuba.

Fine Rumbero, Singer, Composer, Arranger, Percussionist, Actor and Orchestra Director well known since the late 40’s, especially as a guaguancó singer.

He began touring the world in 1949 and met his later wife in 1960 in Peru.

That same year, he settled in New York, participating in the local scene. He participated in the LP “Patato y Totico” in 1967, he also participated with his brother Eloy Martí in a Quintet accompanied by Gene Golden for the year 1979.

Israel López (Cachao), Arsenio Rodríguez, Héctor Cadavieco, Francisco Valdés, Papaíto, Tony Mayari and Mario Cadavieco also worked on that album.

He participated in the “Grupo Folklórico Experimental Newyorkino” where he was their vocalist and percussionist in 1975. During his stay with them, he composed the song “Cuba Linda”.

Another work of Martí of great remembrance is the album titled: “Saludando A Los Rumberos” published by the Caimán label in the early 80’s and in which the Cuban acts as vocalist and main star.

In it Martí is involved with talents such as: Tony Cofresí, Andy and Jerry González, Yomo Toro, Paquito Pastor, Ray Romero, Claudio Roditti and Ignacio Berroa, among others.

“Iya Modapue” is in itself a guaguancó with open rumba, being at the same time the favorite number of the ‘Grupo Folklórico’, and even the first groove to be recorded.

The levels of experimentation and the freedom to unload several rhythms in a single musical performance are the factors producing the attraction of the musicians for “Iya Modupue” (which means Thank You Mother).

The vocal part is in the hands of Virgilio Martí. The trumpet of “Chocolate” Armenteros, the trombones of José Rodríguez and Reinaldo Jorge, the flute of Gonzalo Fernández and the percussion of Frankie Rodríguez stand out.

“Se Me Olvidó” a bolero by Lolita de la Colina but adapted in guaguancó to the style of the Grupo Folklórico, which, by the way, turned out to be the piece of greatest radio diffusion in the tropical environment and therefore, the one that would open the doors to the group.

The song was interpreted by Virgilio Martí, who also plays the congas. In “Se Me Olvidó”, the violin of Cuban Alfredo de la Fe, the quinto of Julito Collazo, the street redoblante of Jerry González and a Mexican marimba played by Andy González in counterpoint to the notes of the double bass, also played by Andy, stand out. Here it is worth mentioning that Alfredo de la Fe is a virtuoso violinist and among his many performances, I remember his work with Eddie Palmieri, Larry Harlow (the wonderful Jew), the Fania All-Stars and the avant-garde Típica 73.

In the early 80’s he formed a band with brothers Andy and Jerry González, and percussionist Ignacio Berroa.

It is worth mentioning Virgilio Martí’s 1985 performance in the film by Cuban filmmaker León Ichaso entitled “Crossover Dreams” (Sueños truncados).

In it, the Havana native plays the role of “Cheo Babalú” and vocalizes the song “Llora Timbero”.

In that film production made in New York City, he also participates with actor Rubén Blades, who plays the role of “Rudy Veloz”, where they sing the song “Todos Vuelven”.

In 1990, he contributed to the “Soundtrack” of the movie Azucar Amarga.

He maintained a great skill in converting songs from other genres into rumba arrangements.

We can mention the adaptation of the theme of the Brazilian composer Jorge Ben, “Más Que Nada” in which he appears on the LP with Patato and Totico.

Martí died on October 17, 1995.
