10th National Salsa Dance Festival: “Venezuela es Latina”

Latin America / Venezuela / Caracas
10th National Salsa Dance Festival: "Venezuela es Latina"
10th National Salsa Dance Festival: “Venezuela es Latina“

Venezuela is one of the most beautiful and popular tourist destinations, renowned for its geographic location, diverse landscapes, rich flora and fauna, artistic expressions, and a privileged tropical climate that allows visitors to enjoy every region—especially the beaches—year-round.

Venezuelans are characterized by being exceptionally friendly, outgoing, and fond of joking; they are hardworking, entrepreneurial, and love to celebrate.

It is worth noting that Venezuela is home to various styles of popular music—such as salsa and Dominican merengue—that are shared with its Caribbean neighbors.

“Venezuela es Latina” stands out as a premier event showcasing and fostering competition in salsa dance—including Salsa Casino, Son Cubano, and linear salsa styles. The event features the most prestigious dance academies from Venezuela and around the world, all of which breathe life and spirit into the global salsa dance community and its many variations.

We have also observed with great anticipation the ongoing growth of the salsa dance world, which is becoming increasingly prominent and celebrated; this has led to a significant rise in the number of groups and schools dedicated to promoting salsa and a wide range of other Latin dance genres.

The 10th “VENEZUELA ES LATINA” National Salsa Dance Festival aims to:

  • Promote the work that various schools are doing for the benefit of Salsa.
  • Create a space where students from the various schools take center stage.
  • Foster integration among students, apprentices, dancers, and instructors from the same academy, school, or group.
  • Showcase the tremendous work academies, groups, and/or instructors do for the benefit of their students.
  • Highlight the work performed by directors, assistant directors, choreographers, instructors, and dancers.
  • Promote the work of choreographers.
  • Provide a channel for professional development and the growth of new talent in the Salsa world.
  • Dedicate a major day to celebrating the efforts academies and groups make to steer young people and adults away from drugs and a destructive lifestyle.
  • Contribute to the professional development of each participating academy.
  • Secure participation from schools nationwide.
  • Generate avenues for instruction and artistic training across various dance genres.
  • Provide a platform where dancers can receive training through workshops and also have the opportunity to perform on stage alongside the country’s most renowned groups.

Marking its tenth anniversary, the event has seen heightened competition and a greater showcase of the schools, academies, dancers, and talent dedicated to promoting Venezuelan Salsa; organizers promise a unique and original event featuring a wide variety of surprises, regarding which they have provided the following information:

  1. State Team Finals: Since December 1, 2015, we have conducted a national tour visiting 18 states, selecting the best dancers from each region to form what we call “State Teams”—groups organized from the top talent in each state to compete in a special event.

  2. We are hosting three parties—on Friday and Saturday starting at 8:00 PM, and a Sunday matinee starting at 2:00 PM—all to celebrate the event’s 10th anniversary. The venue is the LIV Nightclub, a renowned Caracas spot with a capacity of over 1,000 people, a high-quality sound system, and a stage that has hosted orchestras such as Elio Revé, Manolito y su Trabuco, and Pupy y los que Son Son, among others.
  3. We will host shows and group competitions at the Teatro del Incret in El Paraíso, a venue well-known among the country’s dancers and salsa enthusiasts.

  4. We are offering substantial cash prizes.
  5. We will feature eight of the country’s top instructors, including Emily Sánchez (Creed), Erick Lugo (Eguami), Vilma Zerpa (formerly of Social Style), José Manuel Pérez (Director of Son Rumbero), and Arelys Guevara (Imagen Latina), among others.

  6. We will unveil our 2017 Project, which aims to launch a South American Salsa Competition covering Salsa Casino and Salsa en Línea (linear salsa) styles for both soloists and couples. This initiative will be realized through partnerships with dance academies and event organizers in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Panama, Mexico, and Curaçao.

Edwin Sanz

Edwin Sanz was born in Caracas, Venezuela in the district of San Agustin del Sur.

His passion for the artistic world was transmitted to him by his family native from Barlovento where the afro-venezuelan culture is very strong and present and, more particularly, by his uncle Reinaldo Mijares, himself a professional dancer and choreographer.

When Edwin was 6 years old and until his 18 years old, Edwin evolves within he joined the group “Grupo Madera”, as a dancer. It is also during this period that he began to study the percussion. The ‘Grupo Madera’ promotes the afro-caribbean and afro-venezuelan culture through the dance, the song and the music. The company travelled all around Venezuela as well as other South American countries and Europe. The company has also participated in various and important television’s shows.

The 12 travelling years spent in this group were of primary importance to him as a school of life. This gave him the experience and the training needed for his future solo artistic professional career

During the year 2000, Edwin decides to stand on his own two feet and to dedicate himself only to the music as a percussionist. In order to extend his experience and to develop his artistic career he takes off for Europe.
