Alain Pérez Triumphs in Puerto Rico with a Confident Stride

The exclusive Tropicoro Club at the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel in Isla Verde was overflowing to welcome the multifaceted Cuban musician Alain Pérez, who performed in Puerto Rico for the first time as a solo artist. Before the dance concert, held on Puerto Rican soil, which closed Alain’s first solo tour of the United States, he had performed in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Tampa.

To open the concert, the Cubanísimo concept, led by Puerto Rican bassist and cuatrista Jesús Algarín, set the mood for the audience. The young musician made a confident entrance, accompanying himself with powerful interpretations on his instruments, skillfully directing his own orchestra. Prior to Alain Pérez’s show, the musicians of Cubanísimo—cuatrista, singer, and director Jesús Algarín, trumpeter Miguel Ortiz, vocalists Carmen Jiménez and Gilberto Félix, bassist Félix Juan Algarín, bongos player Freddy Camacho, conga player Jeren Guzmán, and flutist Juan Ortiz—brought to life songs like ‘El yerbero moderno,’ ‘Esa niña,’ ‘El bodeguero,’ ‘La rosa oriental,’ ‘El paralítico,’ ‘Así fue,’ ‘Parampampam,’ ‘Lo que fue no será,’ ‘Que te pedí,’ and ‘El cuarto de Tula.’ Once the musicians, directed by Algarín, finished their set, Alain Pérez made his triumphant entrance.

The singer, bassist, guitarist, percussionist, pianist, orchestra director, arranger, and music producer had been in Puerto Rico on a handful of occasions as a backing musician for artists of the stature of Issac Delgado and Chucho Valdés, to name a few. This time, of course, he arrived as a solo artist and with force, to the rhythm of ‘El cuento de la buena pipa.’ Once on stage, the “guajiro,” who confessed in an interview to having “converted to flamenco,” showed that he felt at home while singing, dancing, guaraching, playing the bass, soneando, and rumbando. Once Alain and his orchestra warmed up the luxurious venue, which was overflowing with people, the virtuous multi-instrumentalist performed songs such as ‘ADN,’ ‘El sabor de mi rumba,’ ‘Amor fugaz,’ ‘Son con moña,’ ‘Hablando con Juana,’ ‘Shorcito,’ ‘Modo avión,’ ‘Batilongo,’ ‘La lámpara,’ ‘Pa’ to’ la vida,’ ‘La moneda,’ the title track from his most recent production: ‘Bingo,’ ‘Andaba solo’—a duet with the “Caballero de la Salsa,” Gilberto Santa Rosa—and ‘Pistolero,’ the latter loudly requested by the elegant audience.

Gilberto joined Alain to sing ‘Andaba solo’ as a duet, but not before giving a “welcome to this beast of music, with whom I had the opportunity to record and whom I had the opportunity to meet in person recently,” clarifying that he already knew him musically, adding that they would sing “without rehearsal, but with affection.”

During the show, the musician who defines himself as a guajiro, sonero, guarachero, and rumbero, delivered fusions characteristic of Alain’s great contribution to Latin music, within Afro-Cuban traditions influenced by his exposure to Hispanic folklore. Pérez built the show using a varied repertoire that included salsa, timba, son, and bolero in interesting fusions. Accompanied by his band—composed of Mauro Cabrejas, Josué Puig, Roberto Medina, Víctor Oliva, Alejandro Sosa, Robelis Arévalo, Julio Puig, Yunnier Stoker, Cristhian Díaz, Darío Andrés, Alejandro Fernández, and Isaac Cambar—Alain Pérez delivered on his promise: “a night full of Caribbean flavor, rhythm, and

energy.”

From the moment Alain started the dance, the energy did not wane. The audience connected with the artist and the person, who visibly emotional, repeatedly expressed gratitude “for the affection received and the nobility perceived,” adding that since setting foot on Puerto Rican soil he has “felt a lot of peace” and that he’s going to have to buy “a little ranch here.”

With the Puerto Rico performance, Alain successfully concluded his first solo tour of the United States with resounding success. That was the idea. Here in beautiful Borinquen, the audience while demanding makes sure the artist feels the love and respect with which they are received and celebrated. Congratulations!

A girl with passion and talent, nominated for a Latin Grammy Award in the category Best Salsa Album, trumpeter Maite Hontelé is transforming the role of women in music. People in America, Europe and Asia have witnessed her magical talent and the way she performs on stage. Born in Holland, but Colombian in her heart, Maite’s music is a perfect mix of European elegance and tropical joy, which is reflected in her 4 albums:

Llegó la Mona, Mujer Sonora, Déjame Así, and Te Voy a Querer, the last two edited in vinyl.

Also known as ‘Mujer Sonora, Maite has collaborated with artists such as Rubén Blades, Buena Vista Social Club, Chocquibtown, Oscar D´ León, among others, all of them lured by her style. Immersed in Latin American music from her earliest years, she went on to study at the conservatory in Rotterdam, specializing in jazz, salsa, flamenco and Brazilian music.

She was also invited to take part in Buena Vista Social Club’s European tour.

She arrived in Medellín following her heart and her trumpet, releasing one record after another and touring internationally with her salsa band. Perhaps inevitably, she quickly made a name for herself in Colombia through her exploration of salsa in its many forms.

Javi Jiménez from Barrio Manouche talks about his career in Spain and then in San Francisco

Javi Jiménez from Barrio Manouche graces us with his presence in this July 2025 edition after several months of wanting to talk to the artist. After witnessing one of his wonderful shows at Cascal Restaurant, where the group performs regularly, we have checked the high quality of Javi’s work and that of his bandmates, so we could not miss the opportunity to share the most important aspects of his career, both in his native Spain and in San Francisco.

Javi’s beginnings in the musical world

The first contact with music in Javi’s life was made thanks to his parents, and in the neighborhood where he grew up, music was always present. From an early age, he and his brother listened to all kinds of genres at home, which awoke in them an interest in this art form beyond seeing it as simple entertainment. He remembers that since he was six, he saw his uncle playing the guitar until a few years later, when he turned 10, his uncle gave him this instrument so that he could play it himself.

Although his family did not have many musicians, he mentioned a cousin of his who was a bassist and actually wrote him his first chords on a piece of paper so that he could experiment with his new guitar and he did.

First professional experiences

He describes his taste in music after the age of 12 as an “obsession,” and at that time, he was very into rock and punk, nothing to do with what he plays today. He then started hanging out with several schoolmates who shared his hobby of playing music, which ended up giving rise to his first band, Mulatask. Currently, there is nothing about this online, as the internet did not exist at that time, so all evidence that this alternative rock and grunge band ever existed is on CDs and MP3 files that are not public.

In addition to that, the music his parents listened to continued to influence him to some extent. Among their favorite artists were Silvio Rodríguez, Victor Jara, Canción Protesta and Paco Ibañez. These singers impacted him so much that he began to study a little the classics and play them, but rock and electric guitar were still his favorites above all else. In fact, his favorite artists were Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jimmy Hendrix, among others.

This was the kind of music he played with his friends in the neighborhood and they even gave small recitals in front of audiences of 200-300 people when they were 15 or 16 years old at the time, which made the teenage Javi love to show his art to the world. 

Transition to gypsy jazz, modern jazz, and flamenco

Javi’s transition to gypsy jazz (inspiration for the name of his future band), modern jazz, and flamenco began when he moved to Barcelona, where he studied at a jazz and modern music conservatory. There he discovered a lot of genres and styles he had never heard before, one of which was bebop, also known simply as bob, which is a jazz style developed in the United States during the 1940s. At that time, he also discovered Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, among others.

Although Javi did not really identify with that language, he wanted to truly understand music so he could interpret it as best as possible. He did everything he could to understand bebop, but he found it very difficult until he started listening to Belgian gypsy jazz guitarist of Roma descent, Django Reinhardt, who was also a fan of Louis Armstrong. When he listened to Armstrong, he wanted to play the same thing, but with his own Roma touch, so he formed a band with two guitars, a bass, and a violin.

One of this band’s favorite genres is gypsy jazz manouche, which Javi loved and was passionate about since the first time he listened to it, to the point that he would name his future group Barrio Manouche (Gypsy jazz in Spanish).

On the side of flamenco, there were many gypsies and immigrants in his home neighborhood, including the Porrina family, which consisted of world-renowned percussionists such as Ramón Porrina, who has played with Concha Buika and Israel Suarez ‘‘El Piraña’’, a flamenco guitarist who was in Paco de Lucía’s last lineup.

Javi tells us this to show that flamenco was very present in the environment he grew up, largely because there were many migrants. In his family’s case, they came from Andalusia and Cordoba.

He continues to insist that he still did not like it very much and his thing was rock. It was in California that he finally had nostalgic about the music of his homeland and wanted to reconnect with his roots in foreign lands. 

Moving to California

Javi had never thought about trying his luck in California until he met Adam Rouch, a Californian tattoo artist and musician who became his friend and with whom he toured Europe. In 2009, Adam had to return to his city because his parents were not in good health, and he told his Spanish friend to go with him to see how he liked the place. 

Although the artist was not convinced by the idea, he ended up accepting and discovered in San Francisco fun, cultural exchange, diversity, and many things that fascinated him. The best thing was the opportunity for its inhabitants to express themselves through practically any type of art or genre without fear of judgment, which made him decide to definitely stay living and finally become an American citizen.

How Barrio Manouche was formed

After he met with many musicians and made many contacts, Javi and his brother Luis, who is also part of the group on cajón and percussion, met Salvadoran percussionist Marcos Odara, French saxophonist Cyril Guiraud, violinist Magali Sanscartier, bassist Chris Bastian, his future replacement Gary Johnson, and guitarist Ross Howe. Finally, they included Colombian bongo player and flutist Iván Rondón, with whom they collaborated until he became a permanent member of the band.

The previous artists make up the instrumental part, but the dancing part includes Fanny Ara and Brazilian dancer Emaye Ama. 

Thanks to the huge number of nationalities and cultures present in the group, they have managed to get a unique sound Javi describes as a “bomb” due to the mixture of elements that are so diverse from one another.

 He says he feels a deep appreciation and respect for each of them, which makes the unity of the group stronger and more lasting despite the crises and the passage of time.

The Cuban sound, mixing and mastering engineer, winner and multiple times nominated for the Latin Grammy Award, Oscar Autie together with his wife, producer and composer, Kenya Autie gave life to the most ambitious project of their lives, they established in the area of San Francisco bay, CA, one of the best and most recognized recording studio, mixing, mastering and production, El Cerrito Studio.

A recording studio equipped with the most advanced technology and equipment, three rooms of recording and a control room completely isolated acoustically treated to achieve a quality work for all styles and musical genres.

Oscar Autie was born in La Habana, Cuba. Since 6 years old he played the acoustic guitar and his formal musical training began at 9 years old through private classes.

Oscar studied musical composition, arrangements and production at the National School of Arts of Cuba (ENA) where he graduated with a Degree in Guitar Interpretation. He also trained in drums and piano, and holds a degree in Electronics and Acoustics in a Technical School in La Habana.

When he was 20 years old and while living in Cuba, Oscar worked as a Recording Engineer at EGREM (main recording studio and music distributor in the capital at that time). He was also the Sound Engineer during the Tour of prestigious Cuban bands, such as: Isaac Delgado, Síntesis and Arte Vivo, and at the National Theater of Havana. He provided sound engineering for live shows by world-renowned artists such as: Oscar De Leon, Astor Piazzolla, Sierra Maestra and Silvio Rodriguez, among many others. In addition to all this, this wonderful musician recorded many albums during his stay in this AfroCaribbean country.

This voting member, engineer from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (Grammy) and the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (Grammy Latino), a voting member of the P & E (Wing of Producers and Engineers), and member of the Audio Engineering Society moved to the US in 1992 in search of more advancement opportunities. Once installed in California, the talented Oscar Autie has been working on live performances, recording the mixes and mastering albums of a large number of industry musicians such as the nominees and winners of the Latin Grammy: Yalil Guerra, Mister G, Yosvany Terry, Diego El Cigala, Paco De Lucia, Fito Paez, and Mayito Rivera (Van Van) among other personalities of the artistic guild.

Also, he has been Technical Director and Sound Engineer for the prestigious Flamenco Festival of Bay Area since its inception in 2005. Oscar is currently recording and producing other albums for other artists.

In the other hand, the Cuban producer, Kenya Auntie studied guitar at the Conservatorio of Guanabacoa in La Habana and she was the first woman to play the guitar in a rock band on the island, being an inspiration figure for other women with the same musical interest. Kenya has participated in the production of projects such as: Arise Above Abuse, Clave:

Chamber Music, Vol. VI, Stand Before The Systems and Presidential Suite. Currently, this composer and co-owner of El Cerrito Studio continues to contribute her skills in projects with upcoming releases.

El Cerrito Studio operates under the label of El Cerrito Productions, a record company of licenses, promotions and publications. They make reservations to Artists from all over the world and from all styles of music.

They perform recording, mixing, mastering, production, composition, arrangement, transcripts, and promotion.
