Salsa Fitness

Salsa fitness includes all the elements of an effective aerobic workout while performing movements related to the hot style of Salsa. Salsa is actually a dance style created specifically for Salsa music.

In general, salsa dance is oriented as a partner dance style, however, Salsa is often performed solo as well and has become increasingly popular throughout the health and fitness industry. Salsa dance movements are similar to those of the Mambo style of dance.

TYPES OF MOVEMENTS

1- Salsa Fitness
1- Salsa Fitness

Salsa dance style always consists of three weight changes (steps). The three weight changes, or steps, are performed in a four-beat measure. If there is no weight change, there may be a tap or kick. A break step may be performed, which is slightly longer than the previously mentioned steps.

The movements require the participant’s upper body to remain level and unaltered throughout the various weight changes, which is ideal for core training and conditioning. The hips move quite vigorously, allowing the gluteals and the hip flexors to achieve a phenomenal workout. Your arms will also receive a solid workout while they help to communicate the leads in the Salsa dance movements.

The arms will typically be in an open position, and with a partner will be continuously used during movements that include turns, twirls, and for moving one another in unison across the dance floor. However, solo Salsa dancing requires less arm movement, thus providing less of an arm and upper body workout.

While it is true that it will require some time to proficiently learn the various steps and movements associated with Salsa, the process of learning the movements and performing the dance routines will provide a fairly high rate of caloric expenditureand tone most major muscle groups at the same time.

SALSA DANCE CLASSES

3- Salsa Fitness
3- Salsa Fitness

Many fitness centers offer Salsa dance-oriented aerobic classes. Individuals without a partner can team up with another participant or perform the movements by themselves.

Typically, the classes are offered in three separate experience levels: beginner, intermediate and expert. This format allows anyone to choose their personal experience and fitness level and participate at their own pace.

Beginner Salsa classes tends to focus more on the actual steps and the process of keeping your body in the correct form. Individuals that have never participated in a Salsa dance style may find that it is tougher than it first appears, as you will have to keep your upper body level and in the correct form throughout the entire routine.

Intermediate Salsa classes focus more on putting the steps together with the dance. There are slight risks associated with learning Latin and Salsa movements, as coordination and balance are required to keep from falling. It is recommended that you perform some type of warm-up and stretching routine first to allow your muscles to properly ready them before you actually perform the dance routine. As always, consult your medical professional prior to beginning any aerobic fitness routine, especially if you suffer from any type of chronic condition.

Expert Salsa classes consist mostly of dancing and moving at a much faster pace. No matter what skill level you choose, every class offers a workout that will prove to be very effective at burning calories, improving cardiovascular endurance, increasing muscle tone and improving balance and coordination.

TARGETED MUSCLES

Salsa classes focus on exercising virtually all major muscle groups, including the heart. The gluteals, hamstrings, quadriceps, calves and core area will be exercised relatively aggressively in order to perform the various step sequences.

The upper body and arms must maintain specific positions, so they will receive a workout as well, albeit to a lesser degree.

The types of movements associated with the various Latin and Salsa dance styles will also improve flexibility, balance and coordination. Increases in flexibility will promote improvements in blood and oxygen flow into the muscle tissue and the flushing of toxins, essentially helping to cleanse your body.

Gains in balance and coordination are beneficial in performing daily tasks and other physical activities with less effort and a reduced probability of injury.

AEROBIC EFFECT

One of the greatest health benefits associated with performing Salsa dance classes is the improvement to the cardiovascular system. Most individuals will achieve an aerobic effect rather quickly while performing a Salsa dance class. More specifically, you will achieve your target heart rate and maintain that level for a minimum of 20 consecutive minutes. By doing so, you will have achieved an aerobic effect.

Required Equipment

The only equipment required to successfully perform Salsa classes are the appropriate footwear and dress attire. In addition, always remember to bring a water bottle to ensure adequate hydration and a towel to wipe off the sweat throughout the exercise class.

BENEFITS

As previously stated, the main health and fitness benefits associated with regularly performing a Salsa dance-oriented class are improved cardiovascular endurance, increases in muscular tone, reductions in excess body weight and improvements in coordination and balance.

7- Salsa Fitness
7- Salsa Fitness

Salsa dance classes provide an excellent means for increasing your caloric expenditure. More specifically, creating a caloric deficit of 3,500 calories will eliminate 1 pound of excess body weight. A typical individual weighing 150 pounds can expect to burn between 175 and 250 calories per every 30 minutes of performing a Salsa dance-oriented routine.

In addition, you will increase your overall body strength and sculpt and tone your muscles. If you combine aerobic exercise with anaerobic exercise, which means exercising faster and with a greater level of intensity (gasping for air is a good indication), you will achieve an excellent workout.

The continuous movement of Salsa is what promotes improvements in cardiovascular endurance, increases in muscular tone, improvements in structural bone strength and density, and the elimination of excess body weight.

8- Salsa Fitness
8- Salsa Fitness

Typical Salsa dance classes last approximately 60 minutes, with classes open to all levels of participants. In introductory and intermediate classes, the classes are instructor intense as the instructor will interact with each of the participants to assist them in understanding and perfecting the various dance movements.

Salsa dance-oriented aerobic classes can sometimes be difficult to keep up with the pace of the class. With a little persistence, you will likely come to master the moves, enjoy the classes and improve your overall fitness level at the same time.

Alexander Masucci endorses The Salsa Museum and our work

We have been blessed to be supported by great artists over recent years, but on this very special occasion, we have won the support of music executive, producer, composer, and promoter Alex Masucci, the brother of legendary lawyer, businessman, and co-founder of the Fania All-Stars, Jerry Masucci.

Now, we will talk a little about the story of this great Latin music figure for everyone to know him beyond his family ties.

Producer Alexander Masucci
Music executive and producer Alexander Masucci

Who is Alex Masucci, and how were his beginnings?

Alex Masucci was born on November 11, 1949, and grew up in Brooklyn, New York, along with his parents, Urbano and Elvira Masucci, and his brother, the renowned music executive Gerald Masucci, better known to all as Jerry Masucci. He worked part-time for Fania Records still in his teens, attended the University of the Americas in Mexico City and graduated in business administration. Years later, along with Ray Aviles, he founded A&R Film Distributors in the early 1970s, the same year they distributed of “Our Latin Thing.”

Participation in Fania Concerts

Continuing with his activities with the Fania All-Stars, he also supported the production of several of their most important live concerts, among which we can mention the one at Yankee Stadium on August 24, 1973, which received more than 45,000 people. Another of the great events in which Masucci participated was a Celia Cruz concert together with the Fania All Stars at the Stade du Hain in Kinshasa, Zaire, which received about 80,000 people who were able to enjoy “La Guarachera de Cuba” and her companions of that night.

Subsequently, he produced a few performances on big stages such as Madison Square Garden and throughout the United States.

Island Records and Boardwalk

Alex also had a very fruitful journey at Island Records, where he was called upon by its founder Chris Blackwell to be part of the special projects division, a time during which he managed to sign and produce successful albums by Invisible Man’s Band, Third World Band, and Bob Marley himself. In fact, the Jamaican artist managed to get his music heard on American urban radio.

As for Boardwalk Records, he was also able to work with the aforementioned record label thanks to music entrepreneur and filmmaker Neil Bogart, who urged Alex to join the company and deal with great artists of the stature of Ringo Starr and Joan Jett.

Return to Latin Music and Newer Projects

After the very pleasant experience of having worked together in previous years, Blackwell contacted Alex again and proposed once more that they join in a new project that he would name Island Miami, to which Alex gladly said yes. Sometime later, Blackwell left Island, which led him and Alex to partner their recently created company Palm Pictures with Masucci Entertainment. Thanks to this alliance, they managed to sign the Cuban orchestra Carlos Manuel Y Su Clan.

Currently, the executive founded his own company Haz-Mat Entertainment, with which he created music and film projects, among which we can include the documentary on the history of Fania Records.

The Art of Immortalizing Lavoe: The Cultural Bridge of a Young Designer

Through the digital book “Lavoe entre colores,” Victoria Rivas fuses editorial illustration and a passion for salsa to connect new generations with the legacy of “El Cantante de los Cantantes.”

Victoria Analig Rivas Rojas, an artist, illustrator, and graphic designer, was born in Valencia, Carabobo State, Venezuela. At just 20 years old, she holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a major in Graphic Design from the Arturo Michelena University.

Since she was a young girl, her passion for art and music grew, deeply influenced by her salsa-loving, dancing, and music-aficionado (melómana) family.

Her childhood was surrounded by people who loved the arts. She began painting mandalas as a hobby, and since then, she has created numerous paintings and murals both inside and outside her native country, all of which are showcased on her Instagram account, @victoriarivasart.

Her love for music, especially salsa, motivated Victoria to develop her Undergraduate Thesis based on the history of the genre and the biography of her idol. In doing so, she created an illustrated digital book about the life and work of the singer and musician Héctor Lavoe, one of the most prominent artists in the genre.

Concerned by the widespread lack of knowledge among youth her age regarding salsa and the figure of Héctor Lavoe, Victoria utilized the knowledge acquired throughout her degree to preserve and convey this information through illustration.

To achieve this, she employed a qualitative methodology, working with a population and sample of academic experts in the field a musicologist, a graphic designer, and a seasoned salsa connoisseurconducting in-depth interviews with them.

As a result, she successfully demonstrated that illustration is a key tool, functioning as a cultural bridge between words and emotion.

She accomplished this through a digital format that provides easy access for newer generations, people unfamiliar with the subject, and fans of both art and salsa.

This is how “Lavoe entre colores” (LEC) [Lavoe Among Colors] was born an illustrated digital book that immortalizes the life and work of “El Cantante de los Cantantes” and the history of salsa.

“Lavoe entre colores” (@lavoeentrecolores) is structured into 64 pages, which unfold across 11 sections divided into Side A and Side B, emulating the classic cassette tape format.

The book summarizes the singer’s life in chronological episodes, using the titles of his songs as chapter names. It was designed over the course of more than 250 work hours, featuring vibrant, colorful undertones that invite the reader to linger and return.

“Every stroke represents my pride in uplifting Héctor’s name.”
