Rey Ruiz’s ‘Contigo’ concert at the Coca Cola Music Hall in Puerto Rico was Phenomenal.

As part of his Contigo tour, Rey Ruiz returned to what he considers his musical homeland: Puerto Rico. Since August 1992, when his first album (Rey Ruiz) was released, he has not stopped singing. He affirms that from the beginning he longed for a concert on Puerto Rican soil like the one he finally achieved on March 23, 2024 at the Coca Cola Music Hall.

Before the concert, we were counting on hearing the songs that the salsero’s fans turned into hits. Certainly, the Coca Cola Music Hall witnessed how the euphoria with which Rey Ruiz catapulted in the early 90’s was revived. We knew we would hear the usual hits, such as ‘No me acostumbro’, ‘Si me das un beso’, ‘Amiga’, ‘Si te preguntan’, ‘Mi media mitad’, ‘Luna negra’ and ‘Creo en el amor’. To these were added ‘El Rey del mundo’, ‘Mal momento’, ‘El hombre de tu vida’, ‘Así se compone un son’, ‘Es difícil de explicar’ and a medley that included ‘Miénteme’, ‘Estamos solos’ and ‘Eso digo yo’.

An emotional Rey Ruiz sang ‘Cuba y Puerto Rico’, a song of his own authorship, arranged by Papo Lucca, which was included in his 4th album (Destino, 1996). For this special performance he was accompanied by the Puerto Rican cuatro player Prodigio Claudio. The concert was brought to a close with a tasty rendition of ‘Mañana por la mañana’.

Rey Ruiz, whose battle cry also gave the title to one of his musical productions: Fenomenal (2000), clarifies that he is a composer by muse, and that he does not consider himself a composer by trade. However, he is a singer-songwriter by definition, and the composition that best defines him is ‘Si me das un beso’, a song that highlights the Caribbean spark that characterizes his lyrics and interpretations.

Rey Ruiz was one of the soloists who firmly established himself in the salsa scene when salsa romántica was taking over the changing spaces of Latin music. Salsa dura was evolving to give way to the new trend we know today as salsa romántica.  With the repertoire with which Tommy Villariny’s production and Jorge Luis Piloto’s pen were shaping the salsa artist’s career, the success was epic. That great takeoff in the career of the icon of salsa romántica was given with the impulse of the person Rey Ruiz calls “the daddy of the chicks”, his promoter: Edgardo Barreras.  During the concert, Rey Ruiz made a stop to thank Edgardo and the late Tommy Villariny, who was represented by his son Oscar, for the success of his career.

The performance at the Coca Cola Music Hall of the production by Rosalis Torres exceeded all expectations.  It had been anticipated that there would be “a unique experience, a magical night with Rey Ruiz as part of his Contigo tour.  The promise of an evening with the incomparable energy of Rey Ruiz on stage was fulfilled.  Indeed, Rey Ruiz is a legend.  His voice is unique, soft and romantic. However, that “softness” does not detract from his vocal strength, which he managed to show off accompanied by a large orchestra and symphonic sound.

The super orchestra that accompanied Rey Ruiz included Erick Castañeda on congas and musical direction, Elías Lopés, Jr. on timbales, Idelfonso Correa on bongo, Sergio Munera on bass, Héctor Ortiz on piano; Iván Odio, Mario Ortiz and Alfredo Pérez on trumpets; Alexander Zapata and Ramón Benítez on trombones; as well as Alain García, Laura Ruiz and Juan Carlos Gonzales on backing vocals. For the symphonic sound, the chamber orchestra featured Sarli Delgado on double bass and conducting the string ensemble; Leticia Medina, Olga Juliá, Stephanie Berríos Carla Berríos, Mariel Pagán and Emily Reyes on violins; Chrystal Villalongo and Gina Flaz on violas; and Keren Torres and Ruth Brin on cellos.

Rey Ruiz’s more than 30-year musical career confirms that Cuba and Puerto Rico are one bird with two wings. Rey Ruiz is the pride of Cuba and is also the pride of Puerto Rico, his home of always.

Don Perignon and La Puertorriqueña are prides of Puerto Rico

There are many legendary orchestras in Puerto Rico that may not be widely known to many, but La Puertorriqueña is one of those names that cannot be excluded from the musical history of Puerto Rico and Latin America in general. Today, we were fortunate to interview Don Perignon, leader of the group, so that he could tell us about himself and the orchestra he founded. 

Pedro Luis Morales Cortijos, better known as Don Perignon, is a bandleader and timbalero with whom we had the pleasure to talk about his musical background and the Orquesta La Puertorriqueña, which has given him the recognition he has nowadays. Then, these are the most important topics covered in the pleasant conversation we had with the veteran musician.

Why the nickname ”Don Perignon”? 

When asked about why he is known as Don Perignon, he laughs and says that this is the most frequently asked question he has answered in the past three decades.   

It all started because his familly called him ”Perin”. Then, one day, a musician from Andy Montañez orchestra in Miami asked him why he was called that, to which he replied that he has always been called ”Perin” in Puerto Rico. Later, the same gentleman arrived with a bottle of Dom Perignon (a well-known vintage champagne brand) and said that, for him, this young man was a grown man because of how he conducted himself, so from now on he was going to call him Don Perignon. 

After that, Andy Montañez took it as a joke and began referring to the musician as Don Perignon, which other fellow musicians began to do, so it ended up being his official stage name. 

How did Don Perignon fall in love with music?  

Don Perignon told us that the first instruments he liked were the bongo and the conga, but that changed immediately as he knew the timbal, which he felt was more in line with the personality that he projected.  

This curiosity for music led him and other teens his age to create an improvised group, while being at the school and studying at the Puerto Rico school of music. It was not a long time that he was in the institution, but it was enough to learn everything he would need in the future. In addition, the style he has nowadays when performing and leading an orchestra was acquired by watching Barry White, Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, among other celebrities of the day.

La Puertorriqueña   

Something that Don Perignon wanted to clarify with regards to La Puertorriqueña is that the project did not start in 1975 as we thought, but that the group started with other names until 1987, which is when the artist and his colleagues finally decided to name it that way.   

In the early 1970s, both Don Perignon and the rest of his colleagues, in his own words, were ”kids playing at being musicians” who were only interested in playing. However, over time, they started taking things a lot more seriously and decided it was time to pass the baton to someone, so they all took a vote and chose the young man as their bandleader because he was the tallest, had more physical presence and more character. 

That responsibility he was given was a training-school for Don Perignon and acquired most of the knowledge he has today about music. Although the group eventually broke up, the artist is proud that his former orchestra fellows have achieved success and obtain prestige in the projects they undertook, which shows that those seeds they sowed at the time have borne fruit. According to him, ”they all achieved their dream thanks to discipline”.  

Over time, other musicians joined the orchestra and also did their bit to make La Puertorriqueña what it is today.

Don Peringnon has said that one of the most important features of La Puertorriqueña is to always pay homage to the dancers and of course their latest album ”Demostrando a Tiempo” could not be the exception. Orchestras and Latin artists in general can interpret music in their own way, but a common denominator between all of them is that they will always include the characteristic spice of the dance and that is what we aim for in each of our productions,” said the musician. 

It is for this that the artist says that ”Demostrando a Tiempo” is not very different from the rest of the work made by the orchestra, since they have always paid homage to dancers and they will never deviate from that path. What has changed is that the group experienced with much more romantic lyrics than ever and included them in special rhythms for dancers. This makes the production have the perfect fusion of rhythms for those who dance or simply listen. 

Another important detail is that ”Demostrando a Tiempo” can also be defined as a mix between tradition and modernity. In this regard, the bandleader points out that, in the early days of salsa, most musicians were self-taught, until conservatories and music schools welcomed salsa, so musicians were better academically trained and new ways of performing and doing things in general emerged. Therefore, Don Perignon and his musicians, who are from the old guard, have had to adapt to the new times, but without leaving aside the essence with which they started their project. 

Some of its main songs are a new version of the classic ”Soy Tu Ley”, ”A Quien Iré”, ”Sácala A Bailar”, ”Sin Rumbo”, among many others that La Puertorriqueña fans will find in this album.   

After a few weeks of its release, critical reception to the album was very positive and Don Perignon trusts that the impact will be greater as days go by.

Roberto Roena and Apollo Sound will celebrate 50 anniversaries at the Puerto Rico Fine Arts Center

Roberto Roena: Staying active in any profession for 50 (fifty) years is not an easy task for anyone. But if it is a musical orchestra that half a century later continues to bring tropical music to all corners of the planet, more than a musical group, it becomes an institution.

That is the reality of the Apollo Sound orchestra and its founder, the percussionist and dancer Roberto Roena, who this summer celebrate five decades making the world dance and will celebrate it with a great concert to commemorate his career.

“We are going to do something big to celebrate 50 years. It will be in the month of June at the Center for Fine Arts, “said Roena in conversation with this medium.

“It’s going to be something really cool. We are going to sing the hits of the orchestra, we will have guests and a little bit of everything”, added the musician, who indicated that the exact date will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

The Apollo Sound Orchestra was founded in July 1969 and its name derives from the launch that same month of the Apollo 11 space mission, which aimed to carry the first human being to walk on the surface of the moon.

His record catalog includes more than 20 productions and among his most notorious hits are “Tú loco loco y yo tranquil”, “El Escapulario”, “Marejada Feliz” and “El Progreso”, among many others. In the case of Rohena, the renowned 79-year-old musician from Mayagüez began his musical career much earlier, at age 16, with the distinguished group of Rafael Cortijo y su Combo.

He was also part of Rafael Ithier’s Gran Combo and appeared in the star catalog of the famous Fania record company and its All Stars, among other collaborations.

It was in the Mayagüez neighborhood of Dulces Labios where he was born, raised and took his first steps as a dancer. “Sweet Lips is my neighborhood. I have many memories of my childhood days.

From there came great musicians, such as Santitos Colón and Mon Rivera”, he pointed out.

When she was nine years old, her family moved to Santurce and when she was barely a teenager, she was already appearing on television.

He was discovered by Cortijo in one of his dance performances on the La Taberna India program and from there he became a percussionist for the renowned group. Since then, he has not stopped delighting his followers with his music.

“In these 50 years, there is no greater satisfaction than being able to continue playing,” said Roena, who last Saturday began the celebration of his 50 years in a concert at the Lehman Center of Performing Arts in New York, where he brought together several of the singers who accompanied the group in its beginnings, such as Sammy González, Tito Cruz and Carlos Santos, among others. In addition to the concert, Roena does not rule out going back to the studio to continue shaping her music for posterity.

“This does not mean the end of Roberto Roena and the Apolo Sound. We are going to continue as long as God wants”, he sentenced.
